Dunn seems like a perfect fit next to Beal, Book and KD because he is a high motor and switchable defender that can cover a lot of space for them and on offense he is a low usage guy who will be a lob threat, a cutter and a finisher in transition.

He needs to improve his shooting but he is already on the right path. There are reports saying that he was surprising teams in workouts shooting better than expected, that's huge.

GoK had a great post about him where he linked a bunch of info about him and how insane his defense is. Literally historic in some cases. I can't find it but if he reads this, GoK can you repost that? Thanks

I'll keep it glass half full in this thread. We're sorely missing some real jump out the gym athletes with good size (ala Derrick Jones Jr) and with serious defensive chops and Dunn brings both in spates. I could see a dude get a block on one end, turn around and race down the court to have a Booker or KD send it him for a highlight transition dunk.

I could also see him scrambling opposing offenses with his length and defensive rotations and just getting his hands on everything.

I have no idea who he is but I like drafting a good wing defender so seems like a good pick. Hopefully he can play, that's about all the draft analysis i have these days lol

Yeah I kinda get why we drafted him. There are like ~6ish wing spots on your average NBA roster (SG/SF/PF) and we need defense and athleticism badly.

We'll see how it goes. Athletic guys are always at the very least exciting from a potential/unknown standpoint and he looks like he knows how to defend already. Just a matter of shooting perhaps now.

Just gonna do the mature thing and wait and see how it goes.

https://edemirnba.substack.com/p/ryan-dunn-scouting-report
While putting up historic steal and block rates, Dunn became one of the best defenders in recent college basketball history. His sophomore season makes him one of two underclassmen at 6’8” or under to put up a 10% block rate and 2.5% steal rate or better.

https://augustafreepress.com/news/ryan-dunn-is-an-elite-defender-virginia-needs-him-to-contribute-more-on-the-offensive-end/
Dunn is an ace on the defensive end. According to Synergy Sports, he allows 4.2 points per game on 28.7 percent shooting, both totals ranking in the Top 20 nationally among the 1,202 players with at least 175 defensive possessions on their ledger.

His 2.4 blocked shots per game leads the ACC, and his 7.0 rebounds per game rank 10th.

His impact on the game on defense is already NBA-level.

https://www.si.com/nba/draft/newsfeed/2024-nba-draft-ryan-dunn-potential-as-a-generational-defender
Dunn is a 6-foot-8 wing with an impressive 7-foot-1 wingspan and an impressive frame that looks like he will be able to add a lot of strength and proper weight. Dunn averages 2.9 steals per game which is tenth in the nation and he also averages 2.9 blocks which is fourth in the nation. No player in NCAA history has ever finished top ten in both steals and blocks per game in the same year which is just remarkable to even think about considering all the years college basketball has been around and all the phenomenal defenders we have seen in the past.

As most Virginia fans (and NBA scouts) can tell, Dunn is a generational defensive talent.

Several teams have said Dunn "exceeded expectations with his shooting while also doing some absolutely mesmerizing things defensively in guarding point guards through centers in group settings."

I know that this is a whole lot for a response man! But I feel it's important to illustrate just how absurd and outlier some of the negative and detractive comments on Dunns' value for us truly are.

I really really hope he surprises and is able to contribute in starting role next to our offensive stars at second half of this or start of next season. Him and Allen can substitute for each other and bring completely different skillset to make it hard for teams to adjust. Imagine getting used to let a player open at the 3 and then the best 3pt shooter in the league replaces him in the lineup.

My question is if Dunn is so good why did so many teams skip him and let him fall to #28?

Does JJ and Ishbia see something else the other 27 teams that passed on him see that they don't? If we didn't pick him it's likely he falls to the 2nd round unless maybe Boston takes a flier on another defensive wing?

Well, he's still high risk high reward type of player. Him falling to 28 is odd if reports that he did very well in workouts are true. A team like Knicks with two picks could have taken a risk. But they have OG and Mikal now, so quite redundant for them. Even if not a well rounded player it's still good he has one elite skill.

Same question could be asked for Kolek though. Why nobody liked him in 1st round.

Kolek I can see why no one took him in the 1st round, a subpar athlete undersized player with a low ceiling & a high chance of being a bust if you look at the history of similar point guards.

Tomorrow should be interesting because I don't think Kolek will fall to us and some team might try to work out a deal for us to send an additional pick for him, not sure I want to do that given our lack of picks but if Kolek really is that special he could be worth it.

I don't like the pick. Let's hope we look back in years time and laugh at my outlandish take.
