Mark Williams thread

We got our starting C.

I was mad in the last deadline when I saw that the Lakers got him because he is the perfect rim runner who finishes in traffic and a great rebounder/rim protector.

Gladly the trade was canceled and the Lakers couldn't make **** without any good C on their roster.

Now Mark Williams is a Sun and for a much cheaper price. Yeah, we need to keep an eye in his long-term health but we have this full year to analyze that. He played very well after that physical exam.

An interesting stat:

A solid trade if healthy. I think Suns can extend him, and can likely get him on a discount considering his health issues. Maybe somewhere in the $15-18 million range.

I also was angry that the Lakers were basically getting him for free, and was happy the trade was vetoed. I definitely think Lakers would have beaten the Wolves if they had Mark Williams at center.

He looks huge! Maybe Maluach falling was a suprise and we drafted him to trade him, but that can't technically happen til the KD trade goes through? Idk!!

So then we used #10 on a back up C ?

Something doesn’t makes sense.

We need at least two good Cs on any roster. Mark Williams is ready and can play 30 mpg but you are gonna need 15-20 mpg from your backup C. Injuries are a factor too.

Maluach is not even 19 years old so he will be perfect on that smaller role in his first season in the league.

If the Suns are able to trade Richards for some type of positive value then I'll absolutely love the Williams trade.

I would think they have a trade in mind because why wouldn't they have just traded Richards back for Williams as for the Hornets - it was the two picks

That said -- if healthy, he is a very good pick up. Granted, anybody can hurt

Good addition with Brooks around Booker. The model is there for how to build around Booker. Brooks and Williams -- like both moves as players on the roster

I would imagine you could get a 2nd for him.

We're also talking about him being in the center room with an 18yo rookie who is unlikely to be better than "good for a rookie" (which is almost always NOT very good compared to vets) in his first year and another guy who has never played 50 games in a season. Having an "extra" big or two might be necessary and not so redundant. It might be better to have a guy on the minimum in that role, but who knows.

I do have him in our dynasty league. If I'm being honest I'm not the highest on him. There are two issues - his health and defense. Everyone knows the Lakers trade got nixed but Mark took a big step back last year on defense and he already was never great on that end.

Chalk it up to being out for a whole year, but those are my long term red flags.

Now the positives is that he knows how to finish offensively and he's got a few moves that are really good he can use so he's not just limited to only finishing after a pass (although that is his main way of scoring obviously). He rebounds well.

Also if we're being optimistic, well, he's only 23. There are some guys who are hitting 24/25/26 now and taking some decent leaps. As long as he's not completely hopeless defensively there's going to be potential for improvement going forward.

Now do I like the acquisition? Sure why not? Mark Williams probably has a much better chance at being a good player than whomever gets drafted with those weak picks.

The Hornets did it (I assume) so they -while they are tanking- didn't have to pay him when he is a long term risk and could recoup some value with those picks. Fair play to them and we will see if Mark Williams is worth a nice contract.

Tell you what though, we're younger, bigger, and more athletic now than we were last year. Probably, almost certainly worse. But as a rule of thumb even if you have no picks, from a team building perspective I usually think it's better to be a young bad team than an old bad team, and we were an old bad team last year.

Can't say I'm a fan of this pick up even though he's a Kentucky guy. He's just too injury prone and isn't going to do much better here. He's a nice and decent stop-gap player for us, but we need to be prepared for long stints on the IL and having others taking his minutes.

Hopefully I'm wrong here. Boy do I ever.

Swore he was Kentucky. Oh well. LOL

Outside of the school, everything else I stated stands. Red flags all around.
