Ref beef thread

I am pretty pessimistic about our usual treatment by the referees, especially during the playoffs.

In general, I gauge exactly how bad calls were by how reporters not named Coro react to the game (although Coro often agrees with his fellow press; we're lucky to have him). TrueHoop is epecially good about this. A few things about the Denver game were mentioned around the press:

TrueHoop on the Nuggets game:
This one was also high-scoring like the game the night before, but it wasn't as fun. Lots of referee intervention including an apparent ejection for laughing, phantom fouls on both teams, missed calls, and some sad missed Shaquille O'Neal free throws

On Dan D'Antoni's first-ever technical (from Coro):
When Suns assistant Dan D'Antoni got his first technical foul in three NBA seasons Monday, official Joey Crawford told the scorer, "Technical foul on (Mike) D'Antoni's brother, whatever his name is." He already has more than assistant Phil Weber, who has yet to get one in nine years on the bench.

I don't like the idea of whining about refereeing in general, but it's to the point where I think even the relatively neutral national media is starting to wonder what is going on. I'm ardently anti-conspiracy; I am pretty sure this is a problem of perception that the Suns are a 'soft' team.

Isn't it about time Dwayne Wade got the same leniency that Pat Burke would?

Finally, it should be noted that I'm a bit amazed and pleased that Amare suddenly is in the referee's "OK" book. You don't shoot 20 free throws if the ref hates you. The other shoe should drop around the first round, I bet.[/quote]

where to start....

it all began in that pistons game, since then its been bad towards the suns ever since

if (more like when, with the sweep under the carpet attitude stern took to the last one) another ref conspiracy comes out, dont be suprised to see if it had something to do with the suns and this stretch of games

the umpiring has been so rubbish its not even funny and i genuinely believe an investigation is needed. I truly hope kerr is liaising with the NBA about this

this is EXACTLY what i pointed out during the game thread yesterday, it was audible as hell and directly AT the ref

i truly want a please explain from the NBA about it

this is from Charley Rosens article

# Even though the elbows were flying throughout the game, and several players were blatantly shoved to the floor, Raja Bell (the Suns best defender) was nailed with a second T and banished for grinning too broadly after being whistled for a marginal foul.

# Just a few minutes later, Iverson drove, was hit, and no whistle sounded. Yet A.I. was not penalized in any way when he turned to the nearest ref and said this: "(Bleep) you, man!"

Gambo was saying today that Stu Jackson admitted bell shouldnt have been ejected

firstly, its nice to see Stu make the right call for once, but secondly, what will happen? will the ref be disciplined? this is a vital game that could have cost us home court advantage in the second round (by winning the division)

what are they going to do about blatant bias against the suns?

Rosen again wrote an article about the Suns after they lost. What a surprise  When a known Suns hater thinks the officiating is bad against the Suns, then you know the officiating last night was really REALLY bad.

And remember the previous game against the Nuggs Nash just walked over and talked calmly that's a T. Was that really worse than AI's screaming F you blatantly at a ref? Raja smiles that's a T AND an ejection. Amare makes a face or flaps his arms and that is a T.

+1. I had to read that a few times, because I'm not sure I've ever seen Rosen give the Suns an inch.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Transparency is the obvious, most-effective, and clear (no pun intended) solution to this.

Anyone else think that the fan perception of the NBA would skyrocket if we just knew what the fleck they were thinking, how they're trained, and so on?

NBA officiating is giving the game a black-eye.

Wow, tonight the Raptors got screwed in spectacular fashion by the refs:

ESPN replay

They don't really go into the details, but here's what happened: Toronto had the ball with 0.5 seconds left on their side of the court. T.J. Ford got a beautiful alley-oop to win the game, but it was called off.

The reason was because the shot clock started early. Also, 0.5 is plenty of time to do an alley-oop; if you can turn around and do a jump shot legally in 0.3, and an alley-oop in 0.1 (according to the NBA rules), 0.5 should be no big deal.

The Atlanta board is basically saying that the refs made the decision to waive the shot (not their scorekeepers, the same people who spectacularly botched the Miami-Atlanta game that ended up being replayed). Either way, though, they got screwed bad.

^^ I don't think the officials looked at when the clock started, or when should had started. Raps have an excellent chance on appeal.

and of course who does this in turn screw over?? the suns who need atlanta to miss the playoffs for a higher draft pick

watching the replay, whats worse is that there was .8 of a second left when the ball had finished going through the net

:-( :nonono:

This is what Bill Simmons (A self admitted Celtics Freak) had to say about phoenix's biggest weakness going into the playoffs..

Biggest weakness: Other than the obvious defensive deficiencies with Nash (and to a lesser extent, Barbosa and Amare), you know what's weird about this team? They never, ever, EVER seem to get calls in big moments. You'd think with good guys like Nash, Shaq and Hill that the refs would be falling all over themselves to favor Phoenix, but it's actually the opposite -- for instance, in that Detroit game this week, the Suns lost in overtime because of three indefensibly horrible calls in a row. We might see Mike D'Antoni pistol whip a referee before everything's said and done this season.

He goes on about Shaq...

(Follow-up tangent: It's incredible to me that Shaq, one of the 12 greatest players of all-time, doesn't get any respect from the refs at this stage of his career. Remember the way Kareem was treated from 1985 to 1989? You couldn't breathe on him without getting a foul, which made no sense because nobody liked Kareem! Meanwhile, everyone loves Shaq and he gets called like he's Jamaal Magloire. It's legitimately bizarre. Even Reggie Miller was getting every call at the end of his career, and he wasn't one-fourth of the player that Shaq was. I don't get it.)

I'm not sure if it was Mkot or Impulse who said it best..

I'm not conspiracy theory boy, but this is f-ing bull

He said that /before/ the last Denver game, by the way. The article was posted March 27th...

It's a great layout of the west..

NaplesSunsFan, thanks for finding that article. I had read it and spent like a half-hour trying to find it.

Plus, the mental image of D'Antoni pistol-whipping a ref after a bad call is one I cherish.

You're probably right, to an extent - but how thick-headed do you have to be to confuse Mike D'Antoni's yelling with Grant Hill?

Surely D'Antoni doesn't get on the refs any more than any other coach.
