Nash: "It's not working, is it?"

Post#1 » by Mr. Sun » Sat Apr 26, 2008 7:58 pm

Suns point guard Steve Nash first started questioning the Suns' defensive game plan after Game 2, saying that Phoenix needed to consider doing something different against San Antonio's highly efficient pick-and-roll sets. That sentiment was further affirmed with Game 3.

He said the Suns "didn't know where to turn" when the Spurs started hitting the mid-range shots on the perimeter.

"That was sort of the game plan," Nash said of Parker hitting jump shots. "But when he starts making all his shots, we probably have got to adjust."

The idea that the Spurs big three can't outscore the Suns if Phoenix clamped down on San Antonio's role players is now three games flawed and looking worse with each game.

"It's not working, is it?" Nash said. "So we should probably adjust."

It was one thing when D'Antoni (offense) and Steve Kerr (defense) were citing different roots for Phoenix's problems Thursday. It's another when the head coach begins to lose his players.

"They play playoff basketball," Suns power forward Amare Stoudemire said in admiration of the Spurs, a team about to eliminate him from the postseason for the fourth time in his career. "It's plain and simple. There's no out-of-control plays. There's no shooting the ball within the first seconds. They take their time and make sure they get a basket. They make sure they get a good shot every time down. And that's how they win the title. You got to make sure you get a good shot every time down and you got to make sure you defend well. You can't stop all teams from scoring. Teams are going to score but they make sure they play solid defense out there and they get a good shot offensively every time down and that's how you win a title.

"They've got a strategy that they uphold."

D'Antoni is a great coach, this falls on the shoulders of the players.

Mike is not a great coach, he's a OK, above average coach. Phil Jackson is a great coach. Pat Riley is a great coach. Greg Popavich is a great coach.

Were good. I wonder if he will say that after we get swepted tomorrow?

I almost laught listening to these guys talk about D. Yes, we need a better stratagy, but damn Amare, you look like a (Please Use More Appropriate Word) out there on D sometimes. He does not care, he does not rebound like he should, he just wants to score most of the time. The players mind frame has to be on both sides of the ball, and adjust to "offense and defense". Same with the coach.

But guys, were good...........

Anyone think Shaq will be traded this summer?

I really don't think shaq is going to be better next year. He can't be more motivated than he is this season IMO. He's not going to be quicker. He's a year older.

And that's what a great coach is. D'Antoni is not a great coach, he is decent. He whines to much and doesn't command respect from his players. Getting tossed today being up 30 pts. was silly and unnecessary.

I'm going to go devil's advocate here. I think Mike D is a really good coach who has failed in holding certain players accountable. Whether it's Amare's D or Boris and LB's spotty play, it gets old seeing the same old problems creep up on us year after year in the playoffs. Doesn't make D'Antoni a bad coach though, it is just tough to reach the same players year after year in any professional sport. And when the roster doesn't improve year after year but expectations grow, that is a tough spot to be in. I guarantee you if Mike D got fired tomorrow there would be a handful of teams with him on the phone in an instant. I think that tells you what kind of coach he is. Doesn't mean he is the right fit for this team anymore though...
