A great sportscasting icon turns in his mike. I seldom missed saturday's Wide World of Sports as a kid. And his voice is forever tied into the olympic commentary for me. When I recall the 'Miracle on Ice' as well as the Munich tragedy... it is McKay who narrates it in my head.
'Spanning the globe to bring you constant the variety of sports....the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat...the human drama of athletic competion...'

God this reminds me how much I miss the good ol' days of Wide World of Sports.
You'll never see another McKay in sports again

Apparently there is only a few old farts on this board. Pity...all these peewees missed out on the foundation of television sports broadcasting.
out of curiosity, I youtubed up WW of S and watched some of Evil Knevil's jumps.... and GD if they didn't have the ABC monday Night Fballers covering them....Howard Cosell and Don Merideth at one jump... and Frank Gifford for the Ceasars Palace bouncing ragdoll jump. That was some good TV. You always got your money's worth with Evil...and with WW of Spts...(even if it was woman's arm rasslin)

He along with Cosell made you be invested in sports. It didn't matter that it was some sport you never followed, they brought an element of distinction to sporting events. The only guy who even comes close to him in today sports world is Jim Lampley.
