Shaq's a Good Guy

Story has been up on the Suns website for a bit and been previewed on ESPN for the past few days. Well it aired tonight and I figured I'd make a thread about it since good things like this hardly ever make it into the news and the last news we had about Shaq was his Kobe dissin freestyle. In a nutshell he made a "Make-A-Wish" kids's wish come true. Read for yourself and begin to restore faith in Shaq's good character off the court (media inspired or not).

I saw the segment; it was pretty good.

Shaq definitely needed some good publicity after that stupid rap he did about Kobe.

Honestly, I think Kerr needs to give him one more warning before he threatens to trade him so that Shaq doesn't keep saying and doing stupid things.

- His comments about not having "to play with Chris Quinn and Ricky Davis" were so classless that Kerr had to call Pat Riley and apologize to him.

- Then he did that stupid rap about Kobe for no reason.

I just hope Kerr and Porter have a talk with him about all of this and tell him to cut it out.

I love Shaq, but some of his recent actions and comments have really bothered me.

Shaq, you should be working on your free-throws and conditioning instead of wasting your time rapping about Kobe!

You all are mere peons in the life of shaq. He has been doing this for 15+ years and you expect him to change due to some bad press? He's gotten bad press half his lifetime. He isnt going to improve his FT, he isnt going to improve his class. He is an anomaly in the game of life, and he is thriving in his niche.

If two years after I brought the championship to my team, it consisted of a wounded Wade, and chris quinn and ricky davis, id probably flip out even more than he did. The heat made horrid offseason moves and left him with nothing to work with. Ask yourself if you would feel different.

p.s. he has been doing charity and humanitarian efforts his entire career. he has done an insane amount more good than bad for his teams, the league and the country.

Dissing on shaq is ignorant and futile.

You're in for a long season if you think he's going to be able to improve his free throw shooting. It's too hard for him. It's like one of us using one of those Nerf balls on those hoops you have on the back of your door when you were younger. You just have to hope it goes in. I'm not sure repetition is going to help on something like that. He's basically throwing a softball into an NBA hoop. I'd love to see someone shoot a decent percentage with his size of hands.

It was still inexcusable and classless to call out Quinn and Davis when they never did anything bad to him; but, to his credit, he did apologize to them.

I do agree with the rest of what you said; Riley did a pathetic job in the off-season.

Signing Smush Parker, Luke Jackson, and Penny Hardaway. Then he let Posey and Kapono leave. The Ricky Davis trade didn't work out that well.

It's amazing to me to see how some of the critics and some of the fans have completely turned against him.

They love to point out his poor performance in the 2006 Finals, completely forgetting that Shaq played a HUGE role in helping them get there.

Without Shaq, they never would have made it to the Finals that year.

They love to bring up his big contract, completely forgetting to mention that he took a $ 25,000,000 pay-cut when he was coming off a season where he was the Runner-Up to Nash in the 2005 MVP vote.

They made him the scapegoat for what happened in Miami this season, forgetting that Riley did a bad job in the Summer and gave himself an F for the job he did as the GM.

They forget to mention that Riley killed his confidence this year when he pulled him out of a game on national television one minute after it started which resulted in them getting into a big argument at practice the next day.

They forget to mention that Riley once called out Shaq in the media earlier in the season for being frustrated with his role on the team when Shaq was playing injured for him all season long.

I think Shaq has been unfairly blamed this season, BUT, his rap about Kobe was uncalled for, he's already embarrassed the Phoenix Suns organization, and he took a shot at Quinn and Davis which was completely classless on his part.

I've lost A LOT of respect for him as a person this year; I'm not sure he's this "great" guy the media makes him out to be anymore.

I mean, after the terrific (but also heartbreaking) Game 1 Double OT game against the Spurs in Game 1 of the Playoffs this year, he talks about how "the flopper's won today."

Why make such classless comments like that after such a great game?

I really hope Kerr and Porter have a long talk with him soon...

Pardon my french, but shut the hell up about that already.
He hasn't been able to improve on his FTs during his prime, why would he do it now when he's declining? Just shut up and accept that his FTs aren't exactly a strong point in his game..

Yeesh!

Gotta love the newbie’s popping off so soon. It happens tho.

All I want is shaq to come into camp trimmed down so he can move and jump somewhat. Thats all. There were times he missed dunks and layups due to no lift or conditioning. I think if he trims down, his injury most likely won’t affect him as much.

I think shaq is a decent guy, but he is one of those you do not want to get on his bad side b/c he will never forget.

I think everybody needs to take a long hard look in the mirror, cause I guarantee you that everybody posting on here has talked **** about someone they know. Fortunately or unfortunately, no one gives a **** what we say, so it doesn't end up on youtube, tmz, or espn. And last time I checked, none of us work 24/7, so, why is it we expect professional athlete to always be working out and not just kickin' back and relaxing sometimes (like every body else).

And from all that we know, Shaq is definately a decent guy, as decent as anyone of us. And if you disagree with that, it is probably cause you are an arrogrant prick.

Eh its only Ricky Davis, he is an arrogant me first prick anyway. Chris Quinn is probably a different story though.

he works on them a lot. -- he came in to Miami that off-season and put in a lot of summer work in with Bob McAdoo, one of our assistant coaches, and still wasn't that great of a FT shooter.

he's never been, and never will....

Diesel, this was a VERY good post, i agree with you on everything.... Shaq is a good guy overall, he has always been very accesible to fans, always doing chaity, and a good teammate most of the time. But yeah like Diesel said, the raick Davis, Quinn etc comments were classless and bs and the Kobe rap was taken out of proportion imo but i dont defend Shaq in those.... but asides that... Riley did messed up in Miami that year, i blame the owner Arison too for being a cheap ass mf, for telling Riley to cut salaries to avoid the Lux tax just a year after winning a ring, In the Kobe/Shaq situation in LA i do blame Kobe, he wanted to be the man and he left the Lakers no choice but to trade the more expensive, older Shaq and keeping him..... among other things.. But Shaq is one of the nicest guys in the league, he only gets a lot of bad rep from Kobe jockers for obvious reasons...
