Steve Nash has a Team Option

Post#1 » by Odonism » Sun Jul 6, 2008 7:11 am

Any way Nash is not picked up next season at 13.125 million?

From an outsiders perspective the Shaq trade split this team. One star player is great in the open court while the other is better in a more methodical game. Iam talking about Shaq and Nash.

While the real star IMO of this team is Amare Stoudamire who can be effective in both styles but is probably better suited with Nash.

Your management has sold off picks over the past few years and it looks like the guy thats really going to be effected is Stoudamire and you the fans.

You can go in the rebuilding direction with Lenandro, Diaw, and Stoudamire or struggle with a fugile attempt to win a title over the next 2-3 years. Bad idea.

One thing is a given IMO...this year is your last chance with Nash at the helm...2008 is it. He is already starting to decline and if it doesnt work now, I think you must rebuild.

yes, one last chance for the suns and it will be more harder to win in 2009 than the last 4 years.. its gonna be tough. the good thing is, dantoni i gone, so no more stupid decisions. and mostly, i want to see how amare matured.. he is the key this season i believe.

O to slim his option isn't picked up. Slim being some sort of carear ending injury. It is possible they would move him after picking the option up if they could get some pieces for the future, but doubtful in my opinion.

Also, they drafted Dragic to be there PG of the future and they would like him to learn under Nash. If he doesn't come up for another year, it would be next season that he is Nash's understudy.

I agree with the Dragic thing. Its also very unlikely unless nash asks to be let go and resigns at a lower rate, like what Arenas did. If he got an extention for 16.6mil/3yrs (10mil for 2009/10, 3.3m for the next two.) Something along those lines. Also, i think OP is just a hater. NO CHANCE to win this year? i disagree. We will be legit contenders once we add a couple pieces like a GOOD backup PG, a 3PT shooting wing, and a defensive PF. Lue, Barnes, SKinner? (seems like what we are doing..)

Does legit contender mean playoff team ??
It will be interesting to see where this yrs
'legit contenders' will be ranked in Vegas....

I would bank that we are not in the top 5
in the west and are likely to have the
same odds as Portland or Dallas.

Nash stays unless he wants out.
My bet is he will play with Dirk again.
What ? Me Worry ?

Hey, thanks for the same thread that has been posted like a thousand times.

I think he will retire a sun. And the suns will pick up that option.

Yeah, sure they won't pick him up since they will finish dead last in the NBA. Nash will average 1 ppg less and 1 apg less, so he will be expendable. Then they will go out and sign Marbury and Ricky Davis to reignite the franchise. They will bring in Isiah Thomas to replace Steve Kerr as GM.

Hahaha j/k :)

I'd personally like to have him opt out and then re-sign for a cheaper rate.

It doesn't really matter, even if he opted out and signed for the league minimum, we would be over the salary cap. That is assuming Lopez is on the books for $1.2 mil, Tuck for $1 mil and Dragic for $1 mil + we will probably retain DJ since he will be a restricted FA. Without Nash's salary we would be at $61.2 mil. Not like him opting out is going to do any good other than putting money in Sarver's pocket.

Plus, if i understand the CBA, when he opted out he would count as 1.5 times his previous salary against the cap until he resigned which would be $18+ Million. Then when he resigned, even if he dropped his salary to the MLE range, our cap number would be near or at $67 million.

If he really wants to help us out cap wise, he will sign an extension before October 31, 2009 for something like 3 yrs and $18 million with the contract back loaded leaving us cap space in the summer of 2010.

2010 Roster-Salary near $42 Million if Nash reups for a reasonable deal, leaving us close to $20 million to chase a big name; with one of the best core teams in league. (especially if Dragic is as good as they think he will be)

Nash/Dragic
Barbs/DJ
Diaw/Tucker
Amare/2009 1st rounder(we still have that one, right?)
Lopez

Personally, I want them to hold on to Barbs and use him to move up next year and grab James Harden. He won't be a superstar, but I could see him being a guy who puts up 20 points a night with ease, ala Joe Johnson. He was listed #10 on Draft Express' 2009 draft.

So much misinformation.

Nash can't opt out himself, it's a team option.

If the team opts out, Nash still gets 7-8 million next year (I can't remember what exactly). So, it wouldn't make sense for the team to opt out and resign to a longer deal.

Ok thanks for that info.

This mean Nash will be picked up in 2009 barring injury.

My main point here was to suggested rebuilding might be a the best route to take after this season. If Nash does come back you will have some talent in both Shaq and Nash as well as expirings that could be used for future assets or young talent. If you decide to rebuild earilier it might make sense to let Nash chase a title while he still has some game left and not pick up the option.
