"The plan now is to develop a two-paneled ball rather than the current eight-panel model."
Why can't the league leave the friggin' ball alone? It's not like it is broken.
Senseless.

The two-panel design was used on the composite ball and did not raise any complaints. Spalding is supposedly hoping that the feature can be used as a marketing tool.
There's no complaints at the moment, but as we saw when the composite ball was introduced last season, the complaints came through thick and fast. Leave your already good ball alone and generate your cash another way Spalding!

Yay, our guys are gonna get into a temporary shooting slump (again), up until Stern decides to finally cut out the crap and go back to using a normal basketball (again).
Or maybe not, IIRC it Marion and James Jones who shot like crap with a toy ball last time...

Wouldn't it be Spalding changing the design and not Stern?
Anyways, that is the stupidest thing I have heard, to change the panels to two. The grooves in a basketball is an integral part of shooting. The feel of the grooves on your fingertips helps with all your mechanics whilst shooting. Taking them away will only mean bad things for the leagues shooters.

This has been Stern's brainchild for a while now. The players complained that the last ball left paper-cut like cuts on their hands after shooting with the new composite ball. I don't think the panels have anything to do with this, rather the "composite" material.
Even Nash didn't like the new ball and he wears trash for shoes, literally.

Stern is an idiot, and complete nimrod. This guy does not get it. soon the ball is going to glow or change colors during the game with this moron as head of the league. He is over his time, and it is starting to show how he dictates the league.
The ball is fine, leave it as is. This is the kind of ball everyone has played with for decades. Let it be man, let it be. Who cares if pathetic PETA gets on your case, there a loser organization anyways. Well, I guess with what they say and do, he might be a member.

it's funny how we go back to James Jones when it comes to a new ball. The guy could not buy a basketball w the new ball. I remember the guy going for 20pts and almost perfect from the field that very 1st game with the old ball back. And then the guy ends up having a decent shooting season. AND yes, why fix it if it ain't broken.

A basketball is nothing compared to the crap the NBA is pulling. I spoke to the President of the ATL Falcons yesterday at a seminar, and he said the NBA is slipping fast in popularity versus NFL and MLB. They need to tap new target markets, and fast. A composite ball is not gonna do that. A referee scandal is not gonna do that. That new wierd guy announcing the second round draft picks didn't help too much either
Stern may be looking at international markets, but you can't look right now. You have to do. The NBA is in trouble and screwing around with random crap isn't gonna help it. I only veered off topic since this seems to have turned into general bash-Stern thread.

I can attest to this even in the international market, Stern has been focusing on featuring the NBA in China and Europe and has been focusing less in Japan to the extent that the NBA merchandise is not even common on the markets anymore.
The NBA used to be much more popular in Japan around 10 years ago and they even had several NBA exhibition games in Tokyo, however Stern has been looking to China and pretty much neglecting Japan.
China has many more people than Japan so obviously Stern is going to look at the bigger market.
It just feels like the quality of the NBA has been cheapened by Stern and his quest for wealth.
