"If...we're on our way to scoring 120 points, I'll stop it"

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/127269I love the defensive focus, but the quote about stopping the scrimmage struck me as odd. I'd understand if he said, "If we're on our way to GIVING UP x amount of points", but what's wrong with scoring?

He better not go all Avery Johnson and push the players until they rebel. I understand defense is a focus but he also shouldn't take the fun away from them. That's the reason some went to the Suns was a free flowing high scoring offense where everyone gets shots. I just hope he doesn't take that away.

I too understand that the Suns need to be more defensive. That is a given. But if he totally takes away what the fans loved about there team then it will be much more than the players grumbling.

if it brings the championship trophy here to phoenix i´m fine with a score round about 100.
i even don´t care if we get a defensive minded team alá detroit, just bring us the trophy.

It's not that he doesn't want to score points, it is that he doesn't want to give up 120 points from a defensive standpoint. Obviously, in a scrimmage, if you are on pace to score 120, then your defense is poor.

I'm not too concern about the comment of them looking like to revamping the offense. I don't think we're looking at something 70ppg...like when Frank Johnson took over. It seems that he wants to run more of a motion offense. For anyone that has never run one it involves a lot of screens, patience and passing. You can throw different wrinkles into it to change things up. I think we'll still run, we will still score in transition if chances are there, I'm also happy to hear we're going to have some structure in the half court, where we can effectively use Shaq, Amare and Boris.

I don't think this will be the case. I think Porter will still let Nash run the offense, just not MikeD's 'let Nash figure out everything' style....we won't be walking it up every possession waiting for Porter to call out the play, that will happen more and more in late game situations, which is fine with me. But having a structured play, other than the pick and roll, to go to with various wrinkles is really what we need. It can't be Nash running around looking for shooters or cutters all the time.

i read that quote too and didnt like it
i LOVE the increased focus on defense, but to say "if we score 110 ill stop the game - thats not our identity" worries me
the fact is that 2 of the leagues most dominant offensive forces (nash amare) are on our team and both arent as good on defense. we are better when trying to outscore opponents. If we can add more focus to defense, thats awesome, but if reading between the lines tells me that porter wants us to be a defense first team, like the pistons, then i dont think thats the right way to go with the personnel we have
dantoni i always thought implemented a system that maximized our talents while minimising our deficiencies. Its starting to sound like porter has his system and wants to force teh players to fit it, especially when i hear quotes about the PG having to do the best defensive job on the court. You cant put square pegs in round holes and i would rather see a system developed around the talent we have whilst still working on the deficiencies rather than forcing them to be something they arent
i wonder how this change in training workload also is affecting the vets who have suprisingly stayed healthy under dantoni's light regime?

I don't like the quote too. But I just refuse to read too much into anything they're saying now. I want to actually see the game, see how they run things...it's hard to judge things until then.

Well considering the scrimmage was not fully timed (ie clock ran through free throws, timeouts etc), scoring 120 would equate to scoring around 140-150 in a fully timed, NBA length game. So basically they would be playing D like they do in an All Star game - probably not what coach wants after preaching an improved defensive effort.
