Suns' Attitude (Non-Suns fans read too)

Post#1 » by Miklo » Tue Nov 18, 2008 1:56 am

Its the dawn of a new era.

Porter's shift towards a defensive mindset is for better or worse going to, and already has started to, change the face of this franchise. We all know that. Nuff said.

Ever since the Suns have gotten Shaq, however, I can't help but notice a shift in locker room and on-court mentality and attitude as well. This has been accentuated by the Suns-Rockets scuffle and Shaq's ejection via the flagrant 2. In the Rockets situation, we saw Barnes' temper flare up in defense of Nash, and we saw Nash and Shaq shift into instigation mode. Just yesterday, Shaq's flagrant, while it may be questionable that it was called a flagrant 2 as opposed to 1, was another example of his physical play and wreckless disregard for human lives  . But after he was called, him not leaving the court and especially him jerking away from Porter who tried to escort him (this bothered me) made me wonder about his classic and the team's newly adapted attitude. Shaq's always been very expressive, but now we have Barnes and of course Raja who get very emotionally invested and we have Nash who based on the Rockets game seems to be developing an attitude as well.

Suns fans: I know its early to say , but are we getting more hard-nosed and are we, by comparison to ourselves over the last few years, looking like the Bad Boys of Phoenix (OBVIOUSLY I'm not comparing to the original Bad Boys or even to other teams)? Is this a good or bad thing? Will it distract some of our guys or is it a win-or-go home mentality FINALLY showing through?

Non-Suns fans: what do these events look like to you? If you are other teams in the league right now does this start to give you respect for the Suns in the sense that they are not just finesse anymore or in the sense that they might push in the playoffs not just with 3's but with physical play and hardnosed determination? Or am I overanalyzing?

I've said it over and over again. If we want to go deep in the playoffs and win it all, we need to change our attitude to a tough, take-no-sh*t attitude. Before Shaq and Barnes we were like the marshmallow team, soft inside, soft outside. Not saying that being reckless and throwing elbows and getting T'd up is the way to go, but it's the kind of mentality we need get go through a tough 7 game series. In the playoffs nobody gonna give 2 ***** about being nice, and we shouldn't either.

Other tough teams:
Pistons
Celtics
Jazz
Spurs
Rockets
Lakers (to a certain extent-Kobe)
Hornets (to a certain extent-Posey)

We need this change in mentality if we want to be up with those teams.

It's a good thing.

A very good thing.

I would agree. MD made our team soft. His philosophy was worse than a WNBA team physically. I like that this team is not taking crap. Remember this?

Nash was the only guy that looked like he cared. Barnes is crazy. Shaq is ....shaq. Bell is loosing it, but still wont back down. This is what we need on this team. It at least offsets Diaw and barbs.

They need to channel this and win. But don’t get pushed around like they used to under MD.

what i see from the suns is added toughness, but there will always be that lingering question about pick and roll defense with nash and amare/shaq

as good a team the suns look right now, come playoff time, those weakness will become magnified

but the season is long, the suns have all season to work on their defense, much the same way the lakers will be working on their toughness and character

i am the guy who wants shaq to punish anyone who drives to the hole. i am also the guy who wants someone like oakley to come play for us. i am very very happy that we are playing with a chip on our shoulders and i am very happy that not only are the players standing up for each other, but they are sending a message that we arent soft and you will get hurt. i love it. who cares if shaq gets suspended a few games. as long as people fear driving.
YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU'RE TALKING TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
