I know it is early, but the college season just started. I love college ball and like to talk about it. So this is the official 2009 draft thread, but it is also a place to talk about these college players and international players.

These are the guys I am watching this year by position.

PG: Rubio, Jennings, Calathes, Curry and Collison
SG: Derozan, Harden, Budinger
SF: ? (as of now, no one jumps out at me)
PF: Griffin
C: Mullens, Thabeet

The PG's and SG's are the ones that stand out to me. I do not think much will come out of Dragic, so I am looking at what we need on this team.

Really? We're not even 3 weeks into the NBA season yet...I think College talk etc could go in the Community thread if anywhere, and when it gets closer to the draft we can start a new thread..

I like Budinger here. He is a hometown guy too.

1. I thought Rubio wasn't old enough to qualify.
2. Do we have any picks left? It feels like we never have a pick.

The Suns need to do everything they can to land Derozan, even if it means trading Amare or Nash...That guy is going to be the next Kobe.

If the Suns continue to play this bad I'm actually considering to root for the 1st pick. Take Rubio and make him play with Nash for a couple of years. He's gonna be something special.

Yes it is quite early to be talking about this already, but I would give anything to get Harden, Budinger, or Thabeet here, mainly Thabeet. Although Blake Griffin is good too and most people are thinking he is going to be number 1 pick, i think by the end of this season Thabeet is going to be top pick in the '09 draft, and Budinger and Harden are also top 10 picks. I dont think the Suns are going to get anybody good the next draft.

I don't think it is too early. Last year we started the draft thread during the summer!

Here are some players to add to the list:
Derrick Brown -- SF -- Jr -- Xavier
Al-Farouq Aminu -- SF -- Fr -- Wake Forest
James Anderson -- SG/SF -- So -- Oklahoma State

James Anderson is really on a tear to start the season. He is averaging 18.7 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 2.2 APG, 1 SPG, 1.3 BPG, while shooting 60.7% from the field, 54.5% from the three, and 100% from the FT line (only 16 attempts though). I have yet to watch him myself but that stat-line has gained by attention. His first big match up will be on Nov 27th @ Gonzaga. I hope I can find a way to watch the game.

Blake Griffin is tearing the league with 26 ppg and 20 rpg in 74% FG shooting. WTF!?!

Come on Tastic, sticky it!!!!!!! Don't let it go to waist.

Watched the Griffin kid, and I think this is the type of kid Kerr wants. He plays D, rebounds and is a beast. if we ever did trade Amare, this the cat I would like the suns to draft if they could get a high enough draft pick.

About the Griffin. Watched him last night. stats 25 pts, 6 rebs, 2 ast, 1 blk. not great numbers compared to see what. Hes not a guy that blks too many shots, but the guy knows how to play the post and is a big physical guy. His knee is a concern to a point, but I think he is a smarter player than amare is. He is avg 25 and 17 rebs with 2 stl and 2 1/2 ast, 1 blk.

Thabeet had a another nice night. 21pts, 18 rebs and 4 blks. hes avg 13pts, 12 rebs and 4 blks a game.

Derozen did not look that great too me last night. He has not hit a 3 yet. And is avg 10 pts.

This draft is going to be weak when you look at it for potential. What we need to get with our pick is to find a player that is smart and is the BPA. Screw potential, we need some smart player on this team.

Hasheem Thabeet 7-3 C
James Harden 6-5 SG
Stephen Curry 6-3 PG/SG

Griffin is a monster down low on both sides of the ball. He outside J is looking better too. Hes got NBA size and has the fundamentals.
Thabeet is huge and athletic for a guy his size. Hes looking better and better every year. If he would have came out this year, I would have liked to see the suns grab him. I think he will be an avg center who protects the basket and blks a lot of shots.
Harden is a smart player. He is deceptive with his skills. Some compare him to a manu or Brandon Roy type of player. If so, I will take that in a heart beat. Great, crafty players who are not the most athletic, but are smart, can score and play all around. He dropped 40 the other night, and is a triple double threat with his passing skills and rebounding.
Curry is a the best scorer in college bball. He will be that too in the nba in a few years. The kid just knows how to put the ball in the basket. Its good for his draft stock the is now playing PG for his team. He is avg 29 pts and 7 ast and 3 stl a game. He like Harden are not the most athletic guys, but are good and know how to play. both have a good BBall IQ

Patrick Mills looked great this offseason. Cant forget about Darren Collison, Patrick patterson too. Especially with the smaller 6-8 pfs that have come into the league as of late.

Do yourself a favor and add my main man Johnny Flynn to your PG list. Dude might not come out this year (I hope not), but he's an absolute stud. He's guaranteed to be a draft-day steal, because his only weakness is that he's short, and short guys always fall on draft day. Ask Chris Paul how undersized points fare in the NBA. Granted, Flynn is not as good as Paul, but Flynn is still a stud. Great on-ball defender (SU has basically abandoned their trademark 2-3 zone this year b/c of Flynn and Paul Harris' man-to-man defense), wicked fast, great penetrator, unselfish, great passer, can finish at the rim, and is surprisingly shooting about 42-43% from 3 so far. He probably won't have NBA 3 range, but he can knock down the 20-footer, which is enough as long as you can get to the rim. Plus the dude is a leader of men.

Jennings I haven't seen, so I can't talk about. But as for Rubio, I saw enough of him in the Olympics to be 100% sold. This dude started the gold medal game against us, and didn't blink for a second. Not only that, he was kicking ass. And he's only 17. Rubio is an absolute game-changer and probable franchise player. Unless his career gets derailed by injury or some off-court BS, he will be an abject stud.

Budinger is nothing special. He can't create his own shot, and doesn't use his athleticism as much as he should. He is pretty much just a pull up jump shooter, and his game is too dependent on whether his shot is falling or not.

James Harden is a stud, but don't know how well he will do in a structured system. At ASU he does what ever he wants, and can get to the hoop anytime he wants against college D. He reminds me of Dwayne Wade with a little less athleticism.
