Amar'e wants MAX money, wants to stay

Post#1 » by Mr. Sun » Fri Feb 13, 2009 8:13 am

Former National Basketball Players Association Executive Director Charlie Grantham, Stoudemire's new agent this season, equates this portion of trade exploration as fantasy basketball, with the majority of the teams exploring the possibilities. When it gets to reality, Grantham said, he will want Stoudemire to have a say, because he will not want to go just anywhere.

Grantham reiterated that Stoudemire prefers to stay in Phoenix and sign an extension, a topic he won't broach with Suns leaders until the off-season.

"I feel he's a (maximum-salary) player," Grantham said. Stoudemire can't veto a trade, but he could discourage a team with a lack of desire for a long-term commitment.

If the Suns get serious about a trade involving Stoudemire before Thursday's deadline, Grantham expects to be consulted.

"A place that may be a real good deal for them may not be the best place for us," said Grantham, who is in Phoenix. "In that case, we would not be interested in signing an extension. I would think most teams would not want to rent him for a year and a half. They would want him to sign for more years and know that he's interested in staying."

Grantham said he would not discourage a deal with a team based on market size but added that the potential for a team's success would be a factor.

"Every player wants to go where they have a chance to win a championship," he said. "When you're thrust into the position he is, you hope you have some input there."
............

Grantham said both players and management deserve blame for the Suns' "underachieving" ways.

"Do I think they have maximized the use of Amaré Stoudemire?" he asked. "No."

Good PR by Grantham. Capitalize on what the news has been reporting and make it sound like all this trade buzz is unbeknownst to Amar'e and like he's perfectly happy with his situation in Phoenix.

Let me ask you this, Grantham...if Amar'e would be so thrilled to stay in the Valley and sign a max extension, then why do you have to mention that it would be nice for him to play in a bigger market and/or with a better team?

Re-read the article. He says that he would not discourage a deal based on market size.

It would be smart for Amare to stay in Pheniox with Nash and sign the extension.

I think that if he is move to another team, his stats will drop, and teams will hesitate on giving him the max contract he is looking for. Of course the agent wants him to sign a max extension and he knows him being moved to another system jepordizes that because of the unknowns.

if he wants max money he better put up max numbers. Gotta improve inthe defense and rebounding. Amara should be a 20,10, 5, 3 type of guy.

^I don't think anyone will be putting up 20/10/5/3 any time soon - who's the last guy to do that? Duncan maybe...though not 3 blocks...

He just needs to get hungry again - back up to 26 and 10 with 2 blocks...

He looked a little hungrier the other nite against the cavs, looked like he was being more agressive on the boards and defensively, like when he sprinted back on d and got that blocked shot......

The problem is, while Amare feels he is a max player, the Suns don't.

--- it's all those years playing with Trix. The only thing he learned from Shawn ....

I thought when I read it that it was a way of discouraging the whole trade thing, but maybe it's exactly what it says - just a way of weeding out places he won't re-sign at.

Like I said in the other thread, 2010 Amar'e, if we get to keep him, will be 100x different than this one. No Shaq in the middle = 30PPG :)

Lots of players are max worthy because of the salary cap. If there were no cap guys like LBJ/Kobe etc would be making 40-50 mil. Amare will likely get a max contract even if he doesn't improve his defense.

Yeah, and look how huge matrixs numbers are now??? and txsun, no one is going to put up those type of numbers, be realistic.

I think he is a max player, but when an agent says his player wants a say in where he goes, thats when I say screw you, he has no right or anything in his contract that states he can interfear with this. Suns have to do whats best for them and you, amare are still getting paid. Stuff like this makes me want to trade him evenmore.

It kinda frustrates me that more players don't renegotiate their contracts or agree to more modest terms in order to surround themselves with better talent.

Ultimately, I get the "I need to get mine while the getting is good" mentality... but still.

I think he's worth $80m over 5...And even then $16m per season is ABSURD in any job/sport...nature of the beast though

He needs a big defensive brute next to him like Przybilla, Perkins, Turiaf etc...

Amare's is not worth max money. Don't be ridiculous guys. Max money is, theoretically, for the 5, 6 best player in the league. For the Duncans, Kobes, Shaqs, Lebrons of the NBA. Not a great offensive player who doesn't play any D and plays even lees D when he feels ignored on the offense. That's utterly unacceptable. Period.

I do think that Amare is a max player. The problem is that Terry Porter has made him a role player with Shaq dominating the paint. It is very obiouse that Amare needs to stay and Terry needs to be fired!

If Kerr trades Amare, he's going to be labeled as the white Isaiah Thomas. Please Kerr, don't be the idiot that trades Amare!
