Surgeon: No Playoffs For Amaré

by Paul Coro - Mar. 5, 2009 06:12 PM
The Arizona Republic

HOUSTON - The out-for-the-season diagnosis for forward Amaré Stoudemire initially left a sliver of hope that the Suns star could return for the playoffs should they qualify.

Out means out. And "season" means, "See you next season."

"Not this season, not at all," said Dr. Pravin Dugel, the Valley eye surgeon who operated on Stoudemire's detached retina two weeks ago. "The Suns have the same goal - to make sure he can resume his career.

"It's very difficult to explain to anyone how serious this is. It's more serous than any knee or ankle surgery. The healing is excruciatingly slow and delicate."

That's both good and bad, the bad is Amar'e being injured of course but the good is he will come back healthy for next season and if the Suns truly want to slash payroll they would probally just not pick up Nash's option or trade him rather than Amar'e considering no team would probally trade for Amar'e since he's injured.

You know that feeling of relief you get when you're having a nightmare and you suddenly wake up and realize everything's okay?

Being a Suns fan is the opposite of that.

Over. And over. And over.

Good, we werent going to make the playoffs anyways and even if Amare came back we weren't going to get past first round.

Seriously, aside from pathetically running this franchise - did the twosome "Karver" slaughter babies in a past life?

It's absolutely epic the kinds of injuries and mishaps that have riddled this franchise.

I would be honored...my thoughts must be valuable if you choose them over a sig, which as they say would be worth "1,000 words"

Butcher it as you like to make it fit, just so long as you don't make it say anything like "UNC is good" or "I Luv $tarbury"

Is anyone surprised of this news? I did tell you all this a few weeks back. I guess this could have gone in the other thread.

Whether or not the Suns can make playoff is still a big question mark.

There were quite a few hints that Amare's return would be highly unlikely because it's one of those injuries where you can't just come back 98%. There were talk of further surgeries so it wasn't like something unexpected. I think most of us knew he wasn't coming back, but was holding on to that slither of hope.

It's going to be a tough off-season when we re-evaluate everything. I say, don't pick up nash's option and sign him to an extension ASAP. Get Amare on an extension ASAP too. If possible sign Nash to something like a front-loaded contract.

Even if he did come back, he wouldn't have played in over two months, and his effectiveness would have been limited. Plus, they would be trying to figure out where he fits in to SSOS.

So well it was nice to cling to the hope that if the Suns can make the playoffs, they could suddenly get a boost of 20 points and 8 boards into their lineup, his impact on the team would have been far less than that.

Now we know what we have, what we're going forward with. End of story.

Maybe Stromile Swift suddenly discovers himself in this offense?

Well, this season is officially over..... I was hoping to sneak into the playoffs and have Amare ready by then, but theres no point now in making the playoffs... just tank imo....

btw, its not like we were making the playoffs anyways!! lol!!

So, now it's clear that this team is going nowhere this year, so what happens? Do the Suns pull a Nellie and blatantly tank? Does Shaq go down with an "injury" at this point? Ugh.

Ah well, I guess they play it out and see what happens, see where Stro fits and take their best shot.

ihateginobili broke this news a week ago so I'm sure the team was aware. I think they will still try and make it. Nash, Hill and Shaq only have so much time.

tsherkin, the news on amare was nothing new, must of us already knew he wouldn't come back this season and if he did, he would have limited effectiveness due to the complete layoff of all physical activity. That "official" news release has changed nothing, we still are in control of our own success. Should Stromile fit in and play productively on the defensive end we will still do well in the playoffs. The way the team is now we score a ton of points, we lack the defensive presence of a PF. With Stro's shot blocking ability the runway to the basket will be closed, which should enable everyone else to get out on the wings and cover those three point shooters. Some of the guys on this team are top flight players in the league, they have a ton of pride and will not quit on themselves, the team or us the fans, we should not quit on them either. Yes it will be a struggle, but we already knew that, but if Stro comes in and plays good "D", it will be contagious and the rest of the guys will be inspired to play harder on "D". So I still believe in this team.

Well, let's see Stro get those minutes and pray that he succeeds in them. Go Suns! :)
