So Shawn Marion's a free agent this year. Anyone have any ideas on what his salary will be when he signs with whatever team signs him? I'm thinking around $8-9mil a year...

He should be lucky if he gets $20m over 3....I think he takes a 2yr $12-$15m deal somewhere...

Sounds pretty realistic. I think teams will realize that it was more the system he was in here than him as an actual player.

Buy Marion at 5 mil a year? Get me a loan, I'm in. I'd be shocked if he went for less than 7 mil a year. That's because he will obviously be targeted by teams that would gel perfectly with him, and his value in the right system is great. You can't look at his career and say that he only thrives in one environment either, look at him on the Suns through the years. Do the Matrix...

Shawn's in a tough spot, finally free to sign anywhere he wants for however much he can get, just as the economy tanks, teams tighten their budgets and after 18 months and two teams where Shawn had declining numbers and impact.
He's in for a nasty shock I think - he still reckons himself a max or close to it guy, if his comments in TO papers are any indication.
To top it off, how he left PHX probably doesn't help. It's common knowledge he was whiny about the perceived lack of respect he got here, which I always thought odd given how teammates and coaches went out of their way to stroke him in print. He was miffed that he was considered a third option on the Suns ... I'm trying to think of how many teams have money they want to commit next year, where Shawn is a good fit, and who don't care about whether they'll have to coddle his ego.
Shortens the list some, doesn't it?

All that said, I think he's a great talent and by accounts, a nice enough guy but he hasn't helped himself much the last while.

As much as it's not going to happen, if we could get Shawn for a 2year MLE deal, I'd be all for it. Resign Hill at LLE to play backup PG full time, and Dudley play backup SF full time. Get a big like Rasho to a min contract, and we're set.

Nash/J-Rich/Marion/STAT/Shaq
Hill/Barbosa/Dudley/Amundson/Rasho

Defensively, we get much better, especially our bench; and we get a guy who can do everything to play point for us, which is also good. Depends who we draft and what we're planning to do with Shaq though..

Sadly I don't think Shawn's ever coming back to PHX as long as Kerr/Sarver are here.

Considering Shawn Marion kicked ass way before SSOL even sniffed Phoenix, that is ridiculous.

Considering how he played in Miami and Toronto, he probably forgot that he used to do that too.

Book him in with the Spurs IMO...rock solid at SF out west next to Duncan

They should sign Sheed and Marion and WOW they're set

Duncan
Sheed
Marion
Manu
Parker

Fixed that for you.

There's no way I could stand the sight of Marion in Purple & Yellow or Black & Silver.

The Spurs are already on the hook for 65 Million next year without Finley on the books. If you want to see something really disgusting check out their available cap room in 2010. The only 2, yes count them.. 2, players they have under contract through 2010-11 are Parker & Duncan. Parker, Wade, Duncan & resigned Ginobli at a discount like his last contract? Gross.

meh, duncan will be ready to fall apart by then - unless 2 max free agents go to the spurs then they wont win it all

as much as parker and manu are good players, its having duncan around that makes them who they are

marion - i see him going to LA

I don't see Marion going to LA. They could resign Ariza who is still young and improving for probably less than what they can get Marion for. As much as I love Trix and what he's done for PHX, I'd rather sign Ariza to a long term contract around MLE than sign Trix to 6-8mil for 2-3 years. Not that he's coming back or anything.

Like I said, I'm a big Trix fan, but i highly doubt there are any team willing to shell out more than 8 mil a year for him. He's already on the wrong side of 30 and his athleticism would continue to get worse over time. That being said, in the right system, he would still give you 18-10. But still I don't see him getting paid more than 8 mil a year and even that is pushing it.

If Marion goes to LA, San Antonio, or to a lesser extent, Dallas.....

.....he'll be on my hate list forever.

His best option is to resign with the Raps....Nobody else is willing to give him the money he perceives he is worth.

Hawks: Have Smith, and Marvin...no
Celtics: Will not be a starter, don't have the money.
Bobcats: Have Wallace
Cavs: Don't have the money
Dallas: They have Howard, and they don't have the money.
Detroit: I'm sure they prefer Prince
Denver: No money, and have a solid front court
Warriors: I think they will be going after Odom....and they have Maggette
Rockets: Artest, and Battier
Pacers: He wants to play for a winner, and he won't start.
Clips: Will not be a winner
Lakers: Will go after Ariza, and I predict Kidd
Heat: I don't think either party wants him back.
Wolves: not a winner
Bucks: They have Jefferson at the 3.
Nets: Possibility....but there is the money piece.
Knicks: Chandler, and Gallinari, and they won't offer him the money.
Magic: They have too much money invested in SF, and they want to resign Hedo.
Sixers: They are set at SF...could play Shawn tons with a sign and trade with Brand (Doubt it)
Us: Would make a lot of sense....but our front office is nonsensical. Barbosa S&T would work for both teams.
Spurs: If he is willing to be 4th options, then they make sense....my gut tells me Wallace is their target
Thunder: Doesn't make any sense
Sacramento: not a winner.
Raptors: See above
Jazz: Not without a S&T with AK47....doubtful
Wiz: Doesn't make sense.

I wouldn't do it for the simple sake of our team chemistry.

I know the reports of his distaste with PHX may or may not have been overblown, but he is at the very least not a positive force in a locker room.

Agree with lilfishi that going after Ariza, makes way more sense than reacquiring Shawn, even without whatever baggage there is in terms of personalities and history.
I think he'll make around $8 somewhere, likely Toronto
