ESPN: Suns won't trade Shaq just to save cash

While the Shaquille O'Neal-to-Cleveland Cavaliers trade talk created lots of buzz over the weekend, there is an obstacle standing in the way of a future Shaq-LeBron pairing: The Phoenix Suns are not going to give O'Neal away merely to save money.

The Suns, who could save roughly $10 million by sending O'Neal to Cleveland for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic, also want to gain basketball value in any trade involving O'Neal, according to league sources with knowledge of the team's thinking.

The Suns reportedly had interest in Delonte West when the clubs discussed possible deals at the February trade deadline, but the Cavaliers greatly value West and would be hard-pressed to part with him. As it stands, the teams have had only preliminary discussions and will continue to speak in the days and weeks ahead.

Phoenix has also fielded calls from other teams that have inquired about O'Neal, including the Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers and New York Knicks. While getting talent in return is a priority, the Suns' desire for financial relief is real, which means they will likely trade O'Neal and his $20 million contract this offseason.

I think this clears it up that if the Suns arn't getting more from the Cavs they probally wont trade him just to save cash. Also it said the Blazers and Knicks contacted the Suns about Shaq.

Not a fan of the trade posted....what do you think POR's offer was? I think it has to include Pryz, Frye, and maybe Webster. That comes out to like $14 million. POR would still have $2million this year in cap space for another player. I think PHX could do much better if those guys are the offer POR is coming with.

For starters, I don't have a clue what Portland is offering, but logic would point to Portland's cap space and Joel Przybilla would be involved. Frye wouldn't be involved as he'll likely be renounced so he doesn't count as a caphold on the Blazers cap space.

Secondly, getting contracts to match would be a bit of a pain. You'd be looking at 7 mil in instant cap space (which could be used by Phx later as a TPE) and just below 7 mil for Przybilla, so that's around 14 mil right there. The Blazers would still have to find a way to add in another 5-6 million dollars. Portland could add in Outlaw, then S&T Raef LaFrentz to a small 1 year contract just to match salaries like the Nets did in the Kidd deal with Keith Van Horn.

Finally, if you think you can get a better deal for Shaq than Przybilla, cap space and one of their Outlaw or Webster, you're kidding yourself. He simply doesn't have a TON of value around the league anymore. Przybilla is a very solid center and would fit in great with the Suns style and is a defensive anchor that Kerr would love. The 7 mil TPE would give Kerr some extra options later or Sarver can just pocket the savings. Then Outlaw (or Webster) gives the Suns some much needed youth for what looks to be a fairly extensive rebuild. You might be able to find some comparable offers, maybe something that better suits what you think the team needs. But better?... I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

Personally, I don't understand Portland being interested in Shaq. He'd make a nice mentor for Oden for a season and he'd give Portland more of an offensive inside presence, but the Blazers would have to use pretty much every trade asset at their disposal this summer just to get him. They'd still have PG problems and a few questionmarks at SF, not to mention they'd still be needing a backup PF.

Have to throw in #14 to CHI

BOOM

Dalembert/Lou
Amare/Ty T/Dudley
Deng/Posey/Hill
Barbosa/RButler
Nash/Hinrich/Dragic

We get really deep and strong defensively. Amare/Nash expire, then S&T for young studs/picks and retool, but remain competitive.

I agree with your post and I think przybilla, cap room and outlaw sounds pretty nice to me if we cannot get tyson chandler.

Use that 7 million and get gortat? Not at that price, but a majority of the money we save would you guys want someone like him or Ariza? Who should we target with the money we'd save in a potential shaq deal that saves us cash.

Combining CHI and NO rumors:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachi ... eId=nezfrh

This trade is much less attractive for NOH basketball-wise, but they get their expiring for Chandler(which is what they tried to trade him for at this past deadline). CHI gets Shaq, and we get two young pieces to build around in the future/help us now. LJ's there just to make the salaries work, but I liked him during his 10-day stint with us.

Nash/Goran
Richardson/Barbosa
Hill/Deng/Tucker
Amare/Dudley
Chandler/Amundson/Frolo

Chandler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gtk6Tl10fLo <--misleading title since it's not much of his 08/09 season at all, but jesus christ...this guy is what we need at the center position.

Deng: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N22f1L3yHc <--hasn't played like this in a while, but the man clearly has potential

I know they've had their injury issues, but A)so has Shaq, B)they're young, C)if our voodoo doctors can fix Nash's back, Amare's knees, Dice's knees, Penny's knees, Hill's ankles, Q's back, and Shaq in general, I don't think two young guns like Deng/Chandler will be any problem for them.

The main obstacle in acquiring Deng or Chandler are the dolla dolla bills that SarvKerr simply won't want to pay.

We'll have a nice group to build with post 2010 too:
Goran, Richardson, Barbosa, Deng, Dudley, Amundson, Lopez, Chandler, and maybe Amare.

What would be ideal after a trade like this would be to trade J-Rich for either a wing defender, some youth, a draft pick, or some cap space.

i much rather do the CHI proposal. Deng, Tim Thomas and another player for O'Neal. The CLE deal simply does not gives us the value we are looking, it saves us money but not value, unless Delonte West is thrown in the deal, now you're talking. In the CHI proposal we get a young athletic small forward in Deng and a perimeter threat in TT. The 3rd player to be mention can be a young defensive minded player such DeMarcus Nelson.

Nice one, Spykes. Thanks.

All I care about is that we send Shaq out and bring back some quality guys who can reinvigorate this team - getting cap space to make a move for Ariza would be good, adding another pick or two would be nice.

We need: youth, defense, team-first guys. We don't need: old stars and offense-only guys

I think the team needs remaking, like when Diaw and Bell came in.
Anthony parker may be available fairly cheaply - he's getting on but he's smart, plays tough d and shoots the three. Solid bench add.

I like the NOH/CHI/PHX deal that looks like this: Simple 4 player

CHI in: Shaq
out: Jerome James insurance pd contract, Deng

They get out of the Deng deal and try to make a run with Shaq right under the taxline... great cap next year with Deng gone, Shaq, Tim, and Miller expiring. Or try to resign Ben by making a second deal to move Miller or Tim/Tyrus.

PHX in: Deng, Chandler
out: Shaq

Turn Shaq into two key pieces to build moving forward. The cost to get significantly better was 1.6 mil, which can easily be offset by a JRich or Amare deal.

NOH in: JJ insured contract
out: Chandler

Just like at the trade deadline, they wanted to move him for next to nothing, now they get to AND save millions and millions immediately. The city of New Orleans and Hornets fans hate it, but it is the reality that we live in right now.

too good of a deal for PHX, not realistic.
