OAKLAND — The Warriors got the guy they wanted all along in Thursday's NBA draft, selecting Davidson guard Stephen Curry with the seventh overall pick.
"We did have Steph on the board at seven probably a month or six weeks ago," Warriors general manager Larry Riley said. "Then he was rising. I was concerned at one point we might not get him. I thought he might go ahead of us. ... He's a guy we targeted."
The only question now is how long they keep him. Riley said he was operating as if Curry will be a Warrior this coming season. But the Warriors, according to multiple sources, are in trade talks for Phoenix Suns All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire. The Warriors would send the rights to their first-round pick, center Andris Biedrins, forward Brandan Wright and guard Marco Belinelli to Phoenix, with swingman Kelenna Azubuike a possible throw-in.
But, according to sources, the only holdups are a contract extension for Stoudemire and the Warriors' desire to keep Curry.
The trade still could work without Curry, who has no monetary value in a trade until he signs a contract. But according to the Arizona Republic, the trade was contingent upon Curry being available at No. 7. He was.
Riley, per team policy, declined to comment. But later in the evening, a team source confirmed the Warriors were trying to keep Curry. For his part, Curry said he wants to stay in Oakland.
A team source said the Warriors are willing to pay to extend Stoudemire's contract, but it's uncertain if team president Robert Rowell would approve (or get owner Chris Cohan to approve) what Stoudemire would likely require.
Stoudemire is set to make $34 million over the next two seasons, but he has a player option on the second season. Riley said he would have a tough time making a trade for a big-name player without locking him up long term.
Assuming Stoudemire garners the maximum, the Warriors would be able to sign him to a three-year, $61.3 million extension. That would put the Warriors on the hook for just over $95 million over five years. If the Warriors aren't willing to pay that much, or if Stoudemire doesn't agree to an extension, the trade likely won't happen.
---------------------
I find it interesting neither GS or Suns will publicly comment on the trade. Riley had a chance last night but refused.

Props to you guys if you can get that kind of a haul. Is there any indication that Amare would agree to stay in GS though?

He's also all about the Benjamins. When he sees max contract extension on the table and an offense that plays to his strengths and nevers asks that he play defense...he'll sign.
My read on the situation is the the main hurdle will be GSW's willingness to part with Curry. Is it posturing? Or is it real. My gut says posturing. Curry and Ellis are too darned similar.

From the sounds of that article it certainly sounds like the Warriors agreed to trade Curry and are now going back on their word....I'd walk away at this point.

Sarver and Kerr have a rep around the league as rookies who are overly eager to make a deal and save money...at any cost. I think Golden State is playing hardball and figuring that our front office will cave since they have do so so many times in the past (KT, Shaq)
We've committed to re-building, so GSW FO figures we're going to trade Amare no matter what. This allows them to name their price...at least in their minds.

Ellis and Curry are very similar - which is why I was at first was convinced that they were dealing them. But it certainly sounds like they want him.

The only way I would want a deal with GSW without Curry, would be for them to remove Wright and add in Randolph.
So no Curry, must get Randolph. PERIOD!!!

Yeah...tell the GSW's good luck trading their overpaid moped jockey and the 5yrs/55 million left left on his contract.
Only Curry is movable at this point. They might want to build around Curry, but they'll have to get rid of Ellis first. Not likely...

Can somebody please explain to me how the trade works without Curry? The salaries don't match up within the CBA for teams over the salary cap.

Because Beans is BYC the trade doesn't work until after July 1.

I would too walk away. from a dubs stand point I believe we are giving up way too much for him.
Biedrins contract at 9 mill per year is very good value to what he brings to a ball club, playing along nash will increase his numbers fro 12pts 11brds to 15 pts per night.
Azubuike is another bang for the buck who does everything you want him to while shooting at a high perecentage
Curry: a rookie with endless possibilities and being groomed by one of the best pg's
Bwright: He hasn't been able to show his full potential but from the glimpses we've seen he can be a solid starter if healthy.
and we get
Amare: Who will be overpaid and will prohibit us from signing anyone else. He gives us the 20/10 a night but really wont get too far in the playoffs with a weak bench.

Yep, I'd actually prefer it that way. But if if not, I could see Kerr maybe budging if they give up an unprotected 2010 pick

shy of becoming an allstar
all in all the warriors need to walk away and let the suns age like the spurs.

look all the little jabs about how much we suck and how we're worse than the spurs aren't really effective because WE KNOW THAT already. bottom line is if you guys want amare then you guys have to give up some pieces of value. if randolph isn't included, then curry is in and barbosa is out.
