Matt Barnes

Post#1 » by _venom_ » Thu Jul 2, 2009 3:11 am

Hey guys, Raptors fan here. There are a number of posters on our board who are adamant about trying to sign Matt Barnes. I am not as high as a lot of other posters on Barnes. Could you guys give me a little insight about Barnes.

Streaky player. Will try to make the difficult play instead of taking what is given. Will shoot well for a week at a time then go cold for 3. Suns fans can't complain too much since they were only paying him the min and you get what you pay for.

Average defense, extremely streaky shooter who is a chucker, but he brings a level of toughness. Our Chuckfino, basically, except he's tougher. Better than any of your wings for sure.

Matt Barnes is a straight up G and brought toughness and defense when he signed with the Suns last season. I doubt he's getting back because another team will probally offer him the midlevel exception.

Damn I don't really write on here as much (only really use Suns Forum for news) but you guys really bashing Barnes like that? The guy always plays with energy, and plays good defense. A very streaky shooter but can hit shots. I loved what Ghill did this season, but next season I wouldn't be mad to see Barnes starting, due to Hill's age. In my opinion, with the bargain we got for Barnes, I'll take him back anyday. Kerr should def. keep Barnes.

Two games that stuck out to be this season was against the Lakers and Warriors.

Barnes:

20 pts, 11 asts, 6 boards (against Warriors)
26 pts, 10 boards, 7 asts (against Lakers)

Too much ignorance here.

Cons:
Streaky

Pros:
Tough
Great size for a wing
Above average defense
Good rebounder for a wing
Always hustles

I've followed him since he was on the Kings. Two things have always stood out. Excellent passing, and rebounding. I don't think this Phoenix team has been a good fit for him. There's obviously a lack of organization when it comes to the defensive end, and it throws him off his game. Same thing on offense when Nash is out and there's really no true ballhandler to run the point.

His scoring has been streaky and inconsistent as mentioned. Hasn't quite been the same 3 point shooter that he was on the Warriors. But his intangibles make him worthwhile to bring off the bench.

Two things that stand out to me is completely blowing that Utah game for us in so many ways. We win that game we make the playoffs. That's just an example of the low bball IQ he possesses. He's a nice player for the minimum but we need the opposite of what he brings to the table.

Loved his toughness and his energy. Very nice rebounding for his size and can handle the ball a bit when the guards get trapped.

But very streaky and quite often makes some pretty "boneheaded" plays. Is looking like a DPOY on the Suns team, but is really only an average to slightly above average defender.

But he was very good for the price we got him for, so I hate complaining about him. Though I definitely wouldn't sign him to anything more than say 10/3 or 15/5

Never EVER let him make the final pass on a fast break. He had me pulling my hair out on more then one occasion last season.

Good defender, streaky shooter. Good rebounder for his size. He's actually a vgood solid player who has been very unlucky not to secure a better/longer contract over the last couple of years. I guess he's a classic example of why you don't overpay wing players, because guys like this can fall into your lap for very cheap.

Any way we can steal F.Garcia of ye's JSrose ... would love to see him here.
