Matt Barnes

Post#1 » by Nyce_1 » Wed Jul 8, 2009 12:21 am

What's the deal with this guy? Are guys gonna re-sign him? How much is he asking for?

I ask because small rumor is saying Orlando is interested. How do you think he'll fit onto our team and in our system.

Thanks for any replies.

This is the latest i've found regarding Barnes and the Suns. Coro doesn't sound to optimistic about Barnes coming back a Sun but he himself wants to remain in Phoenix.

Says he's practicing super hard this summer...

""I'm tired of people looking at me like, 'He's hot and cold,' " Barnes said."

Then quit chuckin shot's up the yang man!!! Love his hustle but sometimes he makes those plays where you're like "wtf man" and it just becomes a trend for a while. Streaky streaky.

Matt Barnes was the Suns best defender and brought toughness to the team when Amare went out with the injury. It's going to be sad to see him go but some other team will probally give him a nice pay day. It's to bad Kerr can't give the midlevel exception to Barnes, 5 years $25M seems fair for everything he brought to the team.

Nice find aa86, good read

If Hill does go, I hope they re-sign Barnes. he has a tenacity I love and who knows, maybe twin daughters will calm him down a bit (Never Fear - you calm yet chief?)

I'd split the MLE between him and Wilcox if it was me. Offer the bi annual to Frye and a min deal to Ross

Maybe 3yrs $8-10m

That's overpaying him immensely. He's only worth about 2-3 per year max.

No way Barnes is worth the full MLE at 5 years, and I don't want him at that price. 9/3 from the MLE makes sense if Hill is off the table, but I don't know if I would even do that. We could just throw in Tucker and take back Brown or something from NO in the Chandler deal.

I would neither give Barnes a 5-year deal at any price, nor give him the full MLE for any length of time. Having said that, however, I wouldn't mind bringing Barnes back, especially since it looks like Hill is gone. Barnes brought that element of toughness and feistiness that every team needs at least some of. Really, we'd like 2 of those guys, but with our roster, it's not very likely. Fropez is the only guy currently under contract with even a realistic potential to become an enforcer type, and he's definitely not there yet.

Barnes would probably be a decent fit on Orlando. His shot last year was extremely inconsistent, although some of that may just have been confidence issues. He did get demoted out of the starting lineup, after all, and the Porter regime in general was not exactly conducive to heightened player confidence. Still, his career shooting numbers aren't exactly mind-blowing, so I don't think he could be counted on to knock down shots. I'd say he's at least a good a shooter as Pietrus, though. In fact, his game is a little similar to Pietrus', except that Barnes is more physical, emotional, and in-your-face. Which can be a very good thing, depending on whether your team needs it or not (ours sorely did/does).

Barnes actually spent a great deal of time at the 4 once Amare went down, and held up fairly well. He's definitely not afraid to mix it up down low, and though he looks pretty slight, he's surprisingly strong for his frame. No, he's not as well-suited to the 4 as Hedo or Rashard, but he didn't totally kill us there.

Barnes is a solid but unspectacular defender on the perimeter -- comparable to Pietrus, but maybe not quite as good. (I think Pietrus is a good, not great, defender, FYI.) He'll occasionally do some stupid things because he's a little hot-headed, but since he's just a role player, that doesn't hurt too much. Offensively, the real key is his shot. If it's falling, he's a very good role player. If it's not, he's not very good. I can't even tell you how many wide-open, in-rhythm, catch-and-shoot threes he bricked last year. But his stroke looks good, and there's really no reason (except maybe confidence) that those shots should keep missing. Barnes' handles are fine for a forward, but that's about it. His passing/court vision is pretty solid, as well as his rebounding -- he racks up a lot of 10/5/5 games.

Overall, I'd say Barnes would be a nice piece for Orlando for the right price, especially if Van Gundy can inspire some confidence in him. Which seems very unlikely to me, but who knows?

I love Barnes. His hustle was what made him one of my favorites despite his lack of BB IQ sometimes. I have a signed jersey of Barnes from when he had that meeting at Santisi Brothers in Phoenix.

I just agree with the majority and feel he is def. NOT worth the full MLE. He's a streaky shooter, but so was Eddie House and I loved that guy. (Im still pissed we let him go)

If you look around the league at who's signing for the MLE, Barnes does not belong in that picture. He has some good things going for him, some faults that drive me crazy and he didn't bring his price up last season with the inconsistency he showed. Just a fact.

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/ar ... l0708.html

"With the Suns' trying to keep Hill and how Jared Dudley played under Gentry, it appears free-agent small forward Matt Barnes will not be back.

Barnes said his agent, Aaron Goodwin, told him Dallas, Cleveland, Orlando and the Los Angeles Lakers (before Ron Artest's signing) showed interest but the Suns have not.

"I guess they're headed in a different direction," Barnes said. "It was a hectic year. I don't think anyone was at their full potential on the team with the coaching situation (Terry Porter's hiring and firing). After the season, Alvin Gentry told me he wanted me back and that I fit his style and he'd always wanted to coach me. Steve Kerr was honest and said they might not have too much money."

No surprise. When he turned after getting the inbounds pass and then threw it to Grant out of bounds that moment was burned in my mind.

I like him because of his temper. Heh. But man. That one play nearly cost me my new LCD TV. It's tough though and the remote bounced off no problem.

Heh

good acquisition for the price we paid, wish ya luck Barnes. I always liked the toughness he brought to our team.

no to Barnes, even at the min. We need to give all the playing time to Dudley and Clark.
