One-on-One with Steve Kerr

Hey guys,

Suns.com posted an interview with Kerr after yesterday's game. Here it is:

Suns.com: After 10 days in Vegas, how is it that you’re still standing?

Steve Kerr: 10 days in Vegas is about eight too many. There is a 48-hour rule in Vegas. You’re not supposed to stay any longer than that.

Suns.com: Have you seen "The Hangover" yet?

Kerr: (laughing) No, not yet.

Suns.com: What do you take away from this past week basketball-wise?

Kerr: It’s always good because your young guys get a lot of experience. You can see the growth and development in them over the course of the week.

Goran came on strong and played great. Earl showed what a good defender he could be. He did a really good job fronting, switching out and hedging. He’s a really, really good defender and that’s exciting for us.

Robin came in and bounced back after a couple of tough games. For those three guys it was a really good experience and they’re better players because of it..

Suns.com: Did anything surprise you about any of your players that you didn’t quite know about them coming into this league?

Kerr: We knew that Earl (Clark) was a really good defender from watching him on tape, but I’m not sure I knew he was that good defensively in terms of his awareness because Louisville played a lot of zone. You could tell that he was aware on the weak side of their zone, but I didn’t know man-to-man that he would be that good in terms of moving his feet and reading coverages.

Suns.com: When Goran (Dragic) played like he did against the Clippers on Sunday, where do you think he ranks among the point guards at the summer league?

Kerr: When he plays fast and when he plays aggressively he’s absolutely one of the top point guards here. The last few games he’s been really, really good and he’s tough to keep in front of defensively because when we're playing fast and he gets a head of steam he can really get to the rim and create some problems for the opposing defense.

Suns.com: Did you see any Louis Amundsons or diamonds in the rough here that you might be interested in as signing as a free agent?

Kerr: I thought Zabian (Dowdell) did a really good job. As our backup point he played really well and I though Jiri did a nice job shooting from the perimeter.

Although Josh Carter didn’t get a lot of minutes, I like him a lot. He came in tonight and he gave us a lift. He is a guy who has NBA three-point range, is smart, and has good length and size.

Same with Micah. I think both of those guys have a chance to make it. we’re excited about all of these guys and it’s fun to see them play. Hopefully, they’ll all get good opportunities to play professionally, whether it’s here or it’s in Europe.

Suns.com: What were your impressions of the way Taylor (Griffin) played here?

Kerr: Taylor did really well. He’s so athletic. His challenge is going to be shooting the ball better from the perimeter.

He was a four in college and he’s trying to play three here. We really didn’t play him much at the four here this week. That’s where he probably would have shined.

But we were trying to get Earl minutes there. But if Taylor is going to make it in the league he’s going to have to improve his shot.

But he’s a great kid, he’s been fun to be around, he works his butt off and he’s a great teammate. He’s got a chance, he just have to keep plugging away like the rest of them

Sounds like Taylor Griffin is a longshot to make the final roster. I wonder if he ends up in the D-League or playing overseas to develop his game.

My guess is overseas.

I don't understand why the Suns don't have more players developing overseas. It seems like a no-brainer. Somebody else pays a guy to develop for a few years and you don't have to waste roster space or guaranteed money on them. After a few years, call them back and have them play summer league and attend training camp. If they've developed, you have another piece to add to the team, if not forget about 'em.

Question: does anyone know of a list of players the Suns hold the rights to that are currently playing overseas? Or any website that tracks players who are overseas for all teams in the NBA? I think that would be pretty interesting to see.

When I first read this thread title I was hoping it was a competition where a fan got to take Kerr on in a fight :(

And Marcin Gortat.

Geez what a roster we would have. Filled with a bunch of overseas players. The Suns need to continue to use second round picks on overseas players. Getting the US players in the second round isn't getting us anywhere lol.
Also don't trade the players :)

Would have liked to see Dowdell make the team but since the Suns extended Nash, Dragic needs playtime and there wouldn't be much time for him to play. Jerry Hubalek had one game but he was struggling to get rebounds against d-leaguers and future fast food workers once the summer ends...Downs had one good game as well but isn't the answer. Josh Carter would be interesting since he was a good three point shooter in college, he could probally do the best in the Suns system hopefully Kerr gives him a look.
