Nash points again to the Pau Gasol gift

It’s tough to say you’re a contender when you look at the Lakers,” Nash said. “The Gasol thing changed everything. Any team in the playoffs that was given Pau Gasol and didn’t really have to give up anything, that would have a big impact on your team. I think anyone else [with Gasol] would be sitting in the position the Lakers are in now, too.

Yeah though there's no denying that some trades are like the lottery, I would consider the Richardson trade in the category though. They dumped Doris Meow and an old Bell who they probably wouldn't have extended anyway for a borderline all-star and top 10 SG in the league in J-Rich, Jared Dudley who's part of the Suns core now and a early 2010 second round pick.

I wouldn't say so, watch this year when Doris goes back to his old ways and Bell gets another year older while Richardson puts up great stats and possibly makes the all-star team, Dudley is in the running for MIP and that pick turns out to possibly be between the #30-38 range.

I'm a huge Nash fan, but I would have to say that what he is saying is not fair. As much as I agree with the statement that the Lakers got a mega steal in the Gasol trade, I think it is kind of petty and unsportsmanlike to say that any playoff team would be as good as the Lakers are if they had received the same trade. And as much as I hate the Lakers they are a really skilled team with a lot of good players and a great coach, and I am sure that they worked their asses off for that championship.

Although it might be true for a couple teams, in my mind it just seems like he is trying to minimize the lakers acheivement.

He's not remembering "competent coaching on both ends of the floor" as a part of that equation, or the fact that there aren't really any gaping defensive holes in their lineup. Phoenix has at least two.

Nash has a point, but answering like that isn't wise because people will reflect upon Phoenix. The Suns wouldn't have won the title with Gasol.

the JRich trade was indeed a steal at the time, but once Amare went down, i think we all looked back, and for the first time in history (for me anyway) kind of wanted diaw back...

of course, if amare hadnt gotten injured, then that trade easily would have helpedmus get further into the playoffs. when gentry took over, those were the thoughts.

The Pau Gasol trade still pisses me off so badly, its like when you are in a fantasy league and 2 people cheat and consolidate their good players onto one team (ever tried Yahoo! Public Leagues???)

But yeah I agree that is a definite dig by Nash and sort of counters the professionalism we saw at his doctorate presentation.

I have yet to look back. Some of you have selective memory. Doris Meow was given his nickname for a reason. He was a liability, he had no passion, no one was ready for his passes, he stopped improving, and he never acknowledged any of his shortfalls.

Watch how awesome JRich does this year with no legit center.

You still have two gaping defensive problems and whatever remains of Raja Bell isn't enough to guard the elite 2s of the league (and certainly not the 1s or 3s that would allow someone else to rotate onto them).

I agree that with a "declined" Bell, that team will still lose to a Spurs in a series, as Ginobili and Parker will explode for 60ppg between them. Gasol, Stoudemire will obviously win the matchup between Duncan and whomever... and Marion will get his numbers but the lack of defense on the backcourt is the bottleneck that will hold them back.

However... if the Suns got Gasol some how back then, there's no reason the Suns couldn't attract some really cheap FAs. Someone like a Greg Buckner, Luther Head etc along with Nash can somehow be a real positive impact immediately. You have a quick defensive 3pt shooter (which Raja was 3 seasons ago) along with Marion to cover the perimeter.... then Gasol and Stoudemire inside...

And its not even Gasol's scoring that will push the Suns over, but his ability to read the game... he's a very very smart player. And someone like him along with Nash will be a huge nightmare for others. Stoudemire, Marion are atheletic based players.. as opposed to "IQ" dependent.

The Gasol "trade" was ridiculous no matter what team you're playing for.

Diaw is a good player but we didn't get max out of him when him, Nash and Amare was on the court. Hopefully J. Rich will improve this year. I think he will. And Bell was declining so Dudley is absolutely a bonus for us.
