Channing Frye to Start at Center for Suns

Suns' head coach Alvin Gentry confirmed to the media on Monday that he's giving the nod to Frye.
"I would say that if I had to do it today that Channing probably will be the starting center," Gentry said. "But we will go to camp and that will take care of itself."
Gentry and the team's general manager, Steve Kerr, are both excited about the prospect of Frye drifting out to the three-point line to open up the floor for Amar'e Stoudemire.
"I just think with Channing out on the floor, he's a great three-point shooter," Gentry said. "He spaces the floor, and with Amar'e rolling to the basket, then I think that has to be a decision that the defense makes: 'what do I do, do I help? If I don't help, then Steve gets Amare the ball.' So I think Channing at the three-point line can be very effective for us."
Saying that Frye is a "great three-point shooter" might be a bit of an exaggeration, at least if you look at his career shooting numbers from behind the arc. Frye has attempted only 70 three-pointers in his 278 games as a pro, and has connected on under 29 percent.

Still looking for a frickin' Channing Frye photo in a Suns jersey.

im glad. frye looked so promising when he came into the league. then somebody realized he cant score if you put a hand in his face and he went without a bucket for 3 years.

I say we put Channing at SG on the positive spin lineup
Dragic (second best PG in draft)
Frye (great 3 point shooter)
TGriffin (has the potential to be a star)
Amundson (wouldn't play more than 5mpg on any other team)
RoLo (totally worth reaching from 15th pick)

Amare also has a great stroke from behind the arc and has only taken like 10 his whole career. He just hasnt been allowed to take 3 pointers. Doesnt mean he cant.
Im excited to see this offense work.

Whilst I agree, he is far from great. Y'all need to dig a little deeper.
He made 33.3% of his 3's last season in a career low in MPG. He also shot a career high in 3's with a mark of 33.
Compare that with say Grant Hill who is not a 3 point shooter and had 12 attempts the season before arriving in the Valley, but jumped to 104 attempts in his first season.
All of a sudden you have an argument that Frye will be a better 3 point shooter, at the very minimum volume wise.
Giving him the green light to shoot will IMO open up his game and give him the confidence that he seems to need.

he's got a sweet stroke and the farther from the hoop the less defense so maybe it will work for him.

Gentry on Amare:"When they announce ths starters, Amare will be a forward, but he'll really be a 5. Don't tell him."

Looks like Amare has been named as a Captain again.
Gentry: "As a captain of his team, we expect (Amare) to be a leader."

Good, so now he has someone to blame when the defense falls apart.

I wish we had picked up DIogu for the minimum like NOH did. Frye+Diogu, dual devastation!

I just hope Frye can bring 1/3 of what Okur brings to Utah.

Dirty, they're only going to be taking 3s because there isn't a 4-pointer yet.

I'd love to see a 4-point line about six feet beyond the top of the 3 line.

Better than having Jake Tskawhosthis or Brian Skinner as your starting center, Frye should be able to put up 15-8 with 30 + minutes per game.

I think Frye was a fantastic pick up for us. I really feel he will put up 13-14 ppg and 6 or 7 boards. I really don't understand the rest of the lineup at this point. D'Antoni mentioned over, and over than Marion made SSOL work. Well, we are not going to get Marion, but I think we still should trade J-Rich for AK47. I know everyone wants to point out the last few years haven't been stellar for him, but in the FIBA championships he looked great. He would mask a lot of Frye's, and Amare's defensive difficulties. We really are not that far from competing. I don't understand why we don't at least try.
