Hey guys,

Bad news:

Phoenix Suns center Robin Lopez will undergo surgery to repair a broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot.

Lopez suffered the injury in the second half of the team's intrasquad scrimmage Saturday in San Diego.

The procedure to insert a screw will be performed Tuesday, by Dr. Gus Armendariz at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix.

The center is expected to miss between six and eight weeks.

As a rookie in 2008-09, the Stanford product averaged 3.2 points and 2.0 rebounds while appearing in 60 games.

Lopez was expected to be able to fight for a starting position and likely be the backup center.

What do they do now? Sign Mark Blount?

I say Jarron Collins if the Blazers cut him instead of Udoka. We need that defensive awareness.

Oh, the life of a Suns fan.

Stromile signed with Philadelphia. I would have liked to have seen him get another chance.

Him and Amare would have been fun to watch because they are awesome athletes.

Stro got injured in his first scrimmage while competing for a last roster spot LOL

So I don't know what we'll see out of him, he may be too far done.

No biggie, Frye and Lou get a few extra mins and that's it.
Not like Lopez was gonna get that much playtime if healthy anyways.

Frye/Lou
Amare/Clark
Hill/Dudley
J-Rich/LB
Nash/Dragic

I think it's safe to say that we are #30 at the center position right now.

Clark should get more minutes too if they give Amare some mins at C.

at least its only four weeks of the regular season. its not like the Suns will be significantly different without him...

So Amare just can't get into foul trouble for a month...

That's a pretty rough second string. Yes the other guys are quality players but LB is our only real legit player coming off the bench.

It's to the point of being a Suns fan where I don't even feel the pain of losing a key guy for 6-8 weeks anymore. I think being an az sports fan in general has worn me down big time.

But to add to the current situation it just means we're going to play Frye and Lou more and this might mean an opportunity for Clark . In fact I guarantee this means Clark will play some during the regular season. Let's watch Clark and see how he does in the preseason. I think he might be ready especially with his defense.

Get well soon Lopez we need you.

If the Suns do not find a stiff out there like Johan Petro -type - older veteran, 6 fouls - for the league minimum over Taylor Griffin - I am going to be ticked off at Sarver. I have pretty much given him a pass on Shaq trade - that was strictly financial. I get that.

But even before Lopez was hurt - it was pretty obvious that with Lopez, Amare and Frye - they didn't have enough fouls in the game at the 5 spot. Plus, I think that is relying on Amare to play the defensive 5 as well as Lopez learning to not foul. Amare and the 5 - its not happening - whether he should be better or not is moot - reality is - the guy is a 4 on offense, and a damn good one so leave it at that.

So hopefully, this injuries forces Kerr and Gentry to tell Rob - cut Griffin, suck it up, sign some guy for a million bucks and lets add depth to a position of need.

Ok, so you guys are saying it's not a big problem since Suns have Frye/Amare (starters) and Lou/Clark (bench).

What if the following happens:

-Amare gets into foul trouble and/or ejected
-Frye cannot play a given night due to back spasms
-Clark is a rookie and is looking like a mess so coach benches him.

What is your lineup like now?

Bottom line: 4 active big men (Amare, Frye, Lou, Clark) will NOT cut it. Most NBA teams have about 6 or 7 bigs lined up in the depth chart while Suns only had 5. The reason teams have extra bigs is exactly for this reason - Injuries! Suns need to sign a veteran minimum big asap.
