Jason Quick, the beat writer for the Blazers, reported a few minutes ago on the radio that they're signing Patty Mills and Collins will be waived, and going to the Suns. Here is the post on the Blazers board

Oh god no.
NBA Scouting Reports, Northwest Division (Part Two)
August 29, 2008
Overview:A third string center who provides size and six fouls, and doesn’t need (or want) to touch the ball offensively. Has good size for a center and an even better wingspan. Possesses average athleticism for a player his size. Not an option offensively. Isn’t the dynamic defender or rebounder that he needs to be to compensate for his shortcomings on the offensive end. Doesn’t take a lot of risks, making him a good spot player, but not one that warrants extended minutes. Smart and seems to understand his team’s offense. Had a nice four year career at Stanford, but didn’t stand out all that much. Selected by the Jazz in the second-round and has played there ever since. Had a couple semi-productive years as a backup, but has seen his production drop significantly to the point that his multi-year contract looks highly questionable. Will become a free agent in the summer of 2010.
Offense: A non-factor offensively who doesn’t have the skills to warrant any touches on this end of the floor. Gets the vast majority of his touches as a hustle player in the post, but will also get the chance to spot up and work with his back to the basket on occasion in garbage time. Doesn’t look to score. Has a relatively decent looking jump shot, but lacks ideal follow-through hurting his consistency badly. Gets some catch and shoot opportunities, but isn’t a threat at all outside of 12-14 feet and will be dared to shoot the ball by defenses if he catches it any further out. Not going to accomplish much when he puts the ball on the floor. Not assertive or comfortable when he’s operating with his back to the basket. Will fight for position, but always looks to face up. Gets very few opportunities going towards the rim when he posts up. Works relatively hard off the ball. Will give his man a big target and go up strong, but is a questionable finisher due to his poor leaping ability. Goes to the line at decent rate relative to the few touches he gets. Shoots a poor percentage when he gets there. Always a candidate to be fouled when he gets a chance to finish. Not going to do much with the ball in his hands unless he’s right at the rim. Won’t be asked to do much on the offensive end in the few minutes he plays. Is a relatively decent passer for his size.
Defense: An average defender that is good for six fouls, decent positional defense, and an occasional rebound. Doesn’t block many shots for a player his size. Lacks the quickness and anticipation to be a factor coming over from the weak side, although is very effective at drawing charges. Struggles in one-on-one situations, doing a great job moving his feet and getting a hand up, but often hacking his man at the rim. Will fight for position underneath, but lacks the lower body strength to maintain it. A poor rebounder who usually loses the battle on the glass to quicker players. Will box out and go after the ball off the rim, but lacks rebounding instincts. Lacks the footspeed to consistently get stops when his man faces up. Gets in a good stance and works hard, but is limited defensively by his instincts and athleticism.
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Jar ... lins-2029/So he can't rebound, doesn't play defense, and has no offense to speak of.
WTF!

This guy's really only there to absorb fouls anyway, so Amare doesn't get hit with them all.

He's underrated as a post defender, and he'll use his size...And he's not an idiot
Still...would have been nice to throw Tucker and a 2nd to NJ for SWilliams...

Surprised they didn't go with a guy like Robert Swift or Sene. Both are younger and have alot of potential, plus they fit the Suns system better...

For sure! Swap that 2nd for Griffin and I'd be even happer.
I still want to pry Sergio Rodriguez away from Sacramento. He and Dragic would make a nice duo when Nash finally slows down.

No they signed him, basically, to a training camp roster contract. They were hoping that he would just go overseas and play for a year, and then come back next season. But he wanted to play in the NBA now, so the Blazers had to sign him to a tender offer sheet (not a guaranteed contract) by Oct 15, or they would lose his rights, and he becomes a FA. Today, they decided to sign him to a regular season contract (something they were hoping to not have to do until next season), and let the other 2 guys go

Collins is one of the people I heard the Suns were calling a 'person of interest' as I described in an earlier post because he has proven minutes as a starter.
There is talk about this but I have not heard yet of anything official. Sarver/Kerr could be keeping a tight lid on it.
As I mentioned before they were waiting for a specific couple of potential cuts. They expected it to be in later in the season. It could be the signing of Mills and our rebounding performance coupled with Speight raping us forced Sarver to cough up money.
If I hear anything official I'll holler.

Let's all calm down. He's not our future center. If he comes here it's because Rolo went down, last minute pick up

That makes 3 less-heralded brothers: Jason Collins, Robin Lopez, Taylor Griffin. And both the centers have twin counterparts. It just keeps getting more and more bizarre....
Anyways - Kerr/Gentry/Coro reports kept saying how if they do get another big man, it will be because they want him to be an "everyday rotation" guy who will play and not somebody they sign just so they can sign somebody.
If it is Jason Collins, I have a hard time believing he is an "everyday rotation" guy who will crack the lineup over Amundson, Lopez, and Clark.
Bizarre...

And by the way - off topic -
LaMarcus Aldridge just got 5 years, 70 million extension.
Remember that number, guys. That is the baseline number Amare and his agent will work with to get a raise. Just keep that in mind...

Coro
http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/PaulCoro/65684The Oregonian's Jason Quick reported this afternoon that eight-year veteran center Jarron Collins will be waived by Portland on Thursday and then come to Phoenix to try out for the Suns. Here's his story.
It sounds right without any further confirmation thus far. Collins was a plausible name that I threw out there a couple weeks ago and was told that it was a good guess. He has been in Portland's camp after spending all eight years of his career with Utah, where he averaged 4.3 points and 3.1 rebounds.
Collins is 30 years old, 6 feet 11 and 249 pounds. He only played 26 regular season games last season because of a right elbow injury he suffered in a golf cart. He started Utah's first three playoff games and did not play in the last two. Collins was competing for Portland's final 15th roster spot that went to rookie Patrick Mills, who is out with a broken foot.
The interest would be in having a big body to defend and rebound. With Robin Lopez out until late November, the Suns do not have a true center on their 13-man roster and are allowed to carry up to 15 players. Collins is an intelligent player and professional, popular teammate. And like the man he'd be filling in for, he went to Stanford and has a twin, Atlanta's Jason, playing in the league.

Thank goodness as this is exactly what they need. Between him and Lopez - that is 12 fouls that Amare has to work with.
It doesn't work with Amare having to play the defensive 5 for boards and defense if he is worried about fouls. I like this move
