Steve Nash doesn't care about losing 20 point leads

Post#1 » by MaryvalesFinest » Wed Jan 6, 2010 8:09 am

From the azcentral article after the Kings game tonight I found this quote interesting from Nash...

"It'd be better if we could hold teams off but we're doing just fine," Nash said after his fourth 30-point game this season. "We were picked to not make the playoffs. For us to have 20-plus wins at this point, we should all be satisfied and just keep building and not put too much pressure on ourselves. When the expectations and pressure rise, it can become a burden and it can be come unrealistic."

-Steve Nash

I wouldn't say losing 15-18-20 point leads is considered "doing just fine" but according to Nash it is. He also mentions just "because the Suns weren't picked to make the playoffs" they don't or shouldn't have heavy expectations? Hello Steve, Sarver just gave you a huge extention along with your buddy Hill I'm pretty sure they want you to compete for a playoff spot! So in other words he's basically doesn't care if the Suns blow leads, doesn't care if this team makes the playoffs and basically is saying all he does is want to have fun on the basketball court.

What's wrong with this guy? Am I the only Suns fan who finds this insane? Can you imagine any "superstar" in the league saying what he said? He's basically giving the finger to all Suns fans.

yeah, something i agree with MVF lol.... what nash is saying is unacceptable, this whole "we aren't supposed to make the playoffs, so if we lay a big fat egg one night its fine, shut up and be happy" excuse is bull

I think what he is saying is that we are not a very good team and are overachieving at this point, so fans should be happy with what they have got; it could be (and may yet become) a lot worse. I'm not happy about it either, but I think it is the brutal truth here. We are just sort of floating aimlessly right now...well to be fair, we have the aim of making Sarver some money. That's it though. The only things the organization wants is a team that is interesting to watch and not totally irrelevant; that's all they are going to pay for, and that's all they will get. Again, I'm not happy about Nash saying this stuff but...his mindset may be the only way to avoid getting ulcers, given our outlook.

I would hate to be right, but I think we will S+T Amare to NY this offseason for D.Lee and some garbage, just so we can have a reasonably interesting 8th seed for 2 more years.

Also, I like the title. It reminds me of "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

I'm more upset about Nash doing all the one-on-one stuffs in the 4th. If we had to lose, I'd feel better if we worked on some alternative off. sets doing so. After a timeout, we had finally someone else, namely Amare, touch the ball and got some scores.

Where exactly does he say he doesnt care that we give up 20pt leads? He says yeah it would be great if we could hold a team off, but sometimes we cant (Suns have ALWAYS been like this). Quit trying to read between the lines.

Yeah I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill.. it seems that this team is prone to giving away games when the pressure builds - he's basically saying that if they get their knickers in a twist about it, all that's going to do is add more fuel to the fire. Sounds pretty logical to me.

Seriously, you guys need your head read. How about we analyse the whole quote?

"It'd be better if we could hold teams off but we're doing just fine,"

There is nothing wrong with the above part. Simply stating the obvious. It's the NBA, it happens. Just more so to us, but if we were losing ALL of these games then it would be an issue. We are not, so it is fine.

"We were picked to not make the playoffs.

Stating the facts really.

"For us to have 20-plus wins at this point, we should all be satisfied and just keep building and not put too much pressure on ourselves.

If he had have finished this sentence after the word satisfied then yeah, I would have a problem with it. BUT, it is right there in black and white "keep building".

When the expectations and pressure rise, it can become a burden and it can be come unrealistic.

Again, he is stating the facts, I don't have any problem with this at all.

Finally, I can't believe people are starting to listen to Mary's dribble.

I love Nash... his candid non rehearsed responses. Perhaps sometimes he is a little too honest. He seems to continually provide non canned, non cliched answers. What he says is true, but the tone indicates his realistic viewpoint.... that we are not that good.... and with what appears to be perpetual optimism, he makes the best of his immediate mediocre situation.

I think it would eat him (and anyone else) up to be so focused on a championship with this owner, who clearly is not. In fact, it would drive me to a couple Panda slayings myself. I've already swiped candy.

What is wrong with you all? Agreeing with mary typically isn't a good thing :D

What do you want Nash to say, he's just downplaying the situation to the media. Do you want him to go ROLO on a door or something? They still won last nights game, thanks to Nash.

MVF you should consider being a reporter for the National Enquirer. The funniest part I found is those who went along with it. When I said people need to stop getting pissed at everything Mary says, I didn't mean start sipping the Kool-Aid. Nowhere in this excerpt does Nash say ANYTHING about being okay with losing 20 point leads. In fact, could he perhaps be trying to put a positive spin on team chemistry and the record? Jesus.

Everything Nash says is just talking in circles and using slightly bigger words than he is comfortable with. There's no "hidden meaning"...he just likes to hear his own voice. NF33IH pretty much stated my interpretation of this "controversial quote".

Lol. Nash is modest. He wants to get back under the radar since teams are still kinda gunning for us after that incredible start.

it's not a big deal but when i read the azcentral article i thought the same thing. "satisfied? dang..."

i mean i agree w nash's quote 100% but i feel that way bc i have nothing to do w it. maybe its just his way of staying sane w a boss like sarver, as someone pointed out. but maybe its sentiments like this one that contribute to sarver being the owner that he is.

i dunno. im glad for the suns' success so far this season... but satisfied.. i dunno..

Don't say I didn't sound the alarm.

But on a serious note, I can see where that doesn't sit well with people but over the last week or so he's been very straightforward about the team - about why there really aren't quick fix roster moves to be made, why the Suns aren't really any kind of elite squad anymore, etc.

All I can say is the guy went through several years when the team were expected to challenge for a title and we didn't win one. Now the team is not at that level but because of early success this year and a still-decent record it seems like people are expecting big results that are not likely to be delivered.

This team is playing a little above it's talent level - as Frank said, and I paraphrase, in the West this is a .500 team, plus or minus a few games depending on breaks.
Can anyone honestly look at rosters and say we're on par with Dallas, Denver, San Antonio, even PTL if they were healthy? The Lakers are the cream, those teams are next and we're back there with Utah and Houston.
And we should be - it's not a huge failure. That's where we could reasonably expect to be. Anything better than that is, frankly, a gift.

So I can't really blame Nash for trying to stave off mad dreams of conquest and empire - it ain't likely. He's also aware I'm sure of not letting pressure and expectations affect other players.
It would be lousy if because we're doing somewhat better than expected, expectations were raised to the point that players felt they're being blamed for underachieving.
