OT: Gun questions/advice...

While my gut tells me I would be better served asking this on the Texas board I'll pose the query here.
I'm returning to America after three years abroad in 25 days. Upon my return I'll be landing in Austin to get my baby out of storage (Scion Xb, 2005) and then I will be hitting a gun dealer. What kind of gun should I get? I have never been too much into hunting but wished I had done it more. I will be doing camping but will also want the gun for home defense. I'd like something that's fun to take to the range too.
I'm thinking right now about a Saiga-12. Which is a converted AK-47 design that spits out 12 guage rounds and you can get a 20+ round drum for.

Not sure on the model but don't different states have different laws? You would probably be better off buying it in AZ.

Texas, NM, and Arizona generally allow the same sorts of weapons. It's when you get to Cali you have to worry.

Japan is something like that too, the Asians have a very low age of consent.

How about a Remington 700 for shooting deer? And a AR 15 variant for self defense?

One of my mates just came back from the US and was telling us how they sell guns at Walmart like they sell power drills. The difference in gun culture between Australia and the US is vast.
If I lived in a war torn country, I'd either get myself a P90 or an AR14.

Jesus Traxxe.... what are you expecting ? an Invading Hoard ?
A reasonable pistol and a 12 gauge/410 should be sufficient for simple protection. Price out some ammo (assuming you need to practice) before you buy. It has quadrupled in price over the last 4-5 yrs. Remember , its not the size of the bullet, its the 'placement'. I am quite comfortable/proficient with my old .22 Ruger with a 9 shot clip. (I do have a back up too... 357 S+W) For 'artillery' and my infrequent bird hunting, I have a 12 gauge. For camping, I have a nice 410 that breaks down, is real light and portable (to compliment my sidearm of course) and has a .22 rifle barrel as well.
IMO, you are going overboard with that gimic 'hollywood' machine gun shotgun you have mentioned. Be practical. Think protection and survival.
