Margarito unhappy with $2M offer, passes on Mosley fight
Welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito has passed on a proposed Jan. 24 HBO fight against former champ Shane Mosley, Top Rank's Todd duBoef told ESPN.com Wednesday.
"We're not doing the Mosley fight," said DuBoef, whose company promotes Margarito. "I got an email from the managers [Sergio Diaz and Francisco Espinoza] saying that they are passing on the fight. They want to evaluate other situations that may be more lucrative."
Top Rank and Mosley promoter Golden Boy had agreed to a 50-50 deal, Mosley had made his deal with his promoter and HBO had agreed on the deal points with the promoters. However, Margarito was unhappy with the $2 million offer Top Rank made him and declined the fight as he faced Tuesday's deadline for a decision.
Margarito stopped Miguel Cotto on July 26 in a tremendous action battle that generated 450,000 pay-per-view buys. Top Rank is planning a summer rematch and duBoef said that while he hadn't spoken in detail with Margarito's managers about the decision yet to pass on Mosley as an interim fight, he thought Margarito was more interested in the rematch with Cotto "rather than fighting a guy Cotto already beat. I think their feeling is that Mosley was a big name several years and isn't a big draw and why should I have to split things with him 50-50?"
DuBoef said Margarito's decision means he may be idle until the proposed summer rematch with Cotto.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was not happy about the decision.
"Margarito talked and talked and talked and as soon as Shane accepted, he was all of a sudden very quiet, and now he doesn't want the fight," he said. "Margarito always says he's the most feared fighter in the world. He should shut up about that now."
Schaefer said he'll focus on making a match for Mosley with titleholder Andre Berto instead.
The Mosleys weren't happy about Margarito's decision either. Jin Mosley, Shane's wife, sent a text message to ESPN.com mocking Margarito: "Reward for missing Margarito. Anybody with information leading to the whereabouts of Antonio Margarito will be awarded two tickets and a free hotel room" to Mosley's next fight.

Brilliant, this Richard Schaffer is implying he's scard of Shane. Trying to attack Margarito's Mexican machismo.

Thats too bad.

Margarito-Cotto II is where the money is at. I still would've loved to see him fight Shane because I think he would've beat him pretty good and only made the rematch that much more anticipated.
Anyways, I am so looking forward to seeing Cotto and Margarito go at it again.

I think that Margarito is a hypocrite after years of calling out Mayweather, he has ducked Williams and Mosley.

Williams, I can agree with. But then again, how much money is there in a Williams fight- more than a Cotto rematch?
With Mosley I don't think that it's ducking. Cotto beat Mosley. Margarito beat Cotto. Mosley doesn't have a irrefutable case for being granted this fight.
I think if Margarito beats Cotto again he will end up fighting Willliams, but right now I think he is concerned about the potential for the blockbuster rematch. Fighting someone who has beat you previously, isn't the best way to preserve the possibility of the biggest fight of your career.

Antonio Margarito-Shane Mosley Deal Reached For 1/24?
According to Francisco Espinoza, co-manager of WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito, a deal has been reached for a title defense against Shane Mosley on January 24 in Las Vegas. There were ongoing negotiations for the last few weeks that broke down last Tuesday when Margarito, angry that Mosley wanted a 50-50 split, turned down the fight. Golden Boy Promotions tried to secure WBC champ Andre Berto for Molsey but there were numerous issues ranging from money to Berto losing his title for not making his mandatory obligation against Luis Collazo.
Espinoza told the usually reliable Notifight, that HBO, who put up a previous license fee of $4 million dollars, came to the table with a new offer late Friday night. Team Margarito went over the offer and approved it over the weekend. The previous license fee being put up by HBO was $4 million dollars. Espinoza did not disclose the financial terms of the new deal.
Espinoza told Notifight that Margarito accepted the deal and is making plans for his Los Angeles training camp. More details to come.

I think Margarito finally came to his senses, it will be until summer that he faces Cotto, and to take a year off during the prime of your career is just flat out stupid.

Good news if its back on.
When I first heard about this fight, I thought it would be a PPV.

Not good news if you have any compassion. Shane's going to get whacked.
I did, though, just re-watch Cotto-Margarito and the first 8 rounds were really competitive. I hadn't remembered it like that, because the ending had been so brutal. But Margarito had to take all sorts of shots in order to get to Cotto. That was not skill.

I actually almost thought Margarito might be on some of Aaron Pryor's supplements. I mean, really - some sort of amphetamine that can't be caught in the piss test after the fight.

Cory (Fargo, ND): With Margarito and Mosely moving it doesn't look like I'm going to Vegas anytime soon for a big PPV fight, does it?
SportsNation Dan Rafael: Margarito-Mosley is not a PPV fight! Regular HBO! I don't think we will see an HBO PPV fight in the first quarter of 2009, which is a good thing.
