Like with the GSP-Penn fight, I don't think the grease made any difference. It's the intent to cheat that bothers me.

GSP didn't get wiped off till after second rd. Yves noticed and wiped off Silva before fight started.

Are you saying that GSP being greased up for one round caused him to beat the piss out of BJ Penn for 4? Because if not, I'm not sure what your point is.
I'm saying, the grease didn't make much, if any, difference in either fight, but it still kind of bothers me that Silva and GSP('s cornermen) made an attempt to get an advantage illegally. I mean, it doesn't keep me up at night or anything, they both remain near the top of my list of favourite fighters (along with Akiyama....talk about greasy).

Re: UFC 97 final card
GSP would have rolled through Penn even if he was covered in sandpaper.

Re: UFC 97 final card
why not take the GSP vs Penn talk to the UFC 101 thread or any of the other dozen threads that have descended into it over the past couple weeks?
seriously. enough.

Re: UFC 97 final card
Kinda looks like the same poster re-iterating how bitter he is over Penn getting destroyed.
But yeah, even though I'm a bit late have to say how disappointed I am with this card.
Was planning to go down to MTL and watch it live, but due to exams and such I didn't even end up ordering the PPV, and glad I didn't.
Silva's only entertainment throughout that fight was his mocking of Leites getting up and occasional dancing in the ring. Leites on the other hand cannot be taken seriously after just dropping like a soccer player pretending to get fouled. I think a new rule should be made to prevent that or at least some penalty or something for excessive "diving" for lack of a better term.
Sad to see Chuck go down too. I think he could've pulled it off except well, he didn't. I guess it's better for the sport to see the torch passed and move on... Also hope this pushes Shogun to better days in the UFC.

The kind of performance Leites put on would just not have happened in Pride, and possibly not in any of the current Japanese promotions either.
For one thing, they have the yellow cards for stalling, and he definitely would have been carded for that ****. I mention that first because it is a rule the UFC actually could and should bring in. I forget what the exact penalties are, but I know you get fined a percentage of your purse, and you may be DQ'd after 2 or 3.
The main reason he wouldn't do that (especially against a guy like Anderson Silva) in Pride is that he would have had the **** stomped out of him, probably with some soccer kicks thrown in as well. I would like to see those brought into the unified rules at some point, as well as knees to the head, but I don't see it happening.

Re: UFC 97 final card
Why are we still talking bout this? BJ, who is my favorite fighter was destroyed. Maybe the greasing helped a little but GSP just completly walked through BJ. If the fight was close than this is a issue but it was to one sided to make excuses. Props to GSP, he is just on another level at WW.Nemesis21 wrote:CPT wrote:Nemesis21 wrote:^^^ GSP didn't get wiped off till after second rd. Yves noticed and wiped off Silva before fight started.

Don't hate the players, hate the game.
Silva's primary goal is to win a fight, not entertain the fans, as MMA is supposed to be a sport first and foremost.
Criticizing his style is as ignorant as criticizing the Spurs when they were winning.
