UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun

Post#1 » by IronChef » Tue Jun 9, 2009 6:09 pm

The 2005 Pride FC Middleweight Grand Prix winner, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, earlier this week did indeed sign a bout agreement to challenge UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida, which will more than likely take place at UFC 104 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 24.

SuperLutas.com.br was able to confirm the rumored match up with sources close to the Brazilian’s camp.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua has in principle accepted a bout with new light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, MMAWeekly.com has learned from sources close to negotiations.

Though a concrete date for the fight could not be confirmed, and Machida’s management could not be reached at the time of this writing, sources say it would likely take place in October or November.

This is a fight I'm really looking forward to. I was a fan of Shogun in his Pride days, but his start in the UFC was pretty disappointing. He should be able to get some good training in by October, and will hopefully look even more like his old self. At the top of his game, Shogun could be a big problem for Machida. Or he could come in flabby again and get his ass kicked. Thoughts? No word on the rest of the card yet.

I have a feeling this could be an absolutely immense fight.

Ideally I'd like to have seen 1 proper contender fight go on, the winner gets the shot, and I think LHW is one of those divisions where they can keep on rolling up great non-title fights for the #1 contender. I didn't think that the Shogun vs Iceman fight was that level, especially with both coming off not the greatest fights in the world, and Rampage looming out there dangling that #1 contendership that he's passed on twice, through various reasons.

But as a fight, if Shogun is getting himself back in order, it should be great. I just hope to see Machida win, partly because I am a fan, but also I just want to see that LHW belt go home with the same person for the first time in a little while lol.

Rampage better hope to win his fight vs Evans, because if not he might regret passing up that title shot ..

Some words for Machida from Floyd Mayweather Jr:

Who? Who’s Lyoto Machida? Lyoto Machida? Oh you mean that guy who sold 200,000 PPVs now he’s a superstar? It doesn’t take much over there does it? I’ve sold 3.5 million PPVs between my last 2 fights alone. How much money did Machida make his last fight? $100,000 maybe? Tell Dana White, for $100,000, I will come show him what a 28 million dollar check looks like.

How is Machida as good as Floyd Mayweather? Because he’s beaten a few unskilled bar room fighters? At the end of the day, you already know, when you watch Floyd Mayweather you see the past, present and future of the sport. Machida don’t deserve to be mentioned in he same breath as me. Kousta Tszyu would whip up on his stank ass anyway.

That article seriously pisses me off. PBF loses 9/10 in an mma match and he knows it. He loses 9/10 also in a street fight with no rules against Lyoto. Wins 9.99/10 in boxing though but who gives a ****.

I would've wanted Rampage to get this shot first, and instead have Shogun take on Evans for contention first.

He's a far cry from his days in Pride. Some people say he was leading the fight with Forrest before he was submitted, but to me, he looked like he was getting embarrassed from the get-go (save for that cut he opened up on Griffin). He could barely even put Coleman away in his last fight. He looked terribly gassed in both fights and out-of-shape. Even with his knockout on Chuck, I wasn't very impressed. Not to take away anything from that, but the Iceman himself hasn't been his sharpest as of late. That one-punch knockout seems to be a recurring sight in recent Liddell fights afterall.

Well Floyd isn't the biggest draw in boxing anymore either, Pacquiao is.

Shogun shouldn't be sniffing the scent of a title shot.
He got embarrassed by Forest, beat a retired half century old Coleman, and an over the hill liddel.
Big deal.

Maybe Cro Cop should get the next title shot if he knocks over the can he fights tonight.

I think that PBF interview is fake.

If not, it probably deserves it's own thread, because he was talking all kinds of **** there, not limited to Machida.

Interestingly enough, there's a link there that leads to a page wherein Mark "The Fossil" Coleman is actually calling out Lyoto Machida saying he has the perfect style to beat the guy. If that page is even legit, then wow... just wow :|
