Re: 2009 Board Awards: Fighter of the Year
I voted Jose Aldo, just barely over Lyoto.
Jose was 4-0 during 2009 including winning a belt. All 4 wins came via TKO
Lyoto also got consideration from me going 3-0, including winning a belt. But his victory over Rua is a controversial one.

Oddly enough I voted for Aldo, even though I chose Machida on my blog as the fighter of the year.

There should be a few more options (Fedor, Mousasi, Bowles, etc), but I guess it wouldn't really matter anyway.
GSP
Only 2 fights, but his complete domination of BJ Penn and Thiago Alves gets him my vote.

Bowles only fought once this year.

I gave it to GSP, but it was very close, I think it's just the way the wind is blowing tonight.
Much like CPT, GSP had two fights, but both were utter dominations, and of arguably the biggest competition to his belt in the former WW champ Penn (though now is looking a bit out of sorts in this ultra-cutting days of weight classes) and Alves.
Aldo came close, winning a belt and 4 TKO wins is extremely impressive, but what held me back is more that it's not quite main stream yet the 145's (and 135'ers), actually that alone should have made me vote for it, these guys deserve to be up there and talked about in the same breath as the standard divisions.
Machida was my fighter of the year up till the Rua fight, despite the win, the controversy behind it makes it so hard to count that towards a real win when balancing up how well they did.
So all in all, just given GSP's true stamp on the WW division, it went to him from me.

Aldo and GSP tied, would've took Lyoto but his performance against Shogun was lacking.

Re: 2009 Board Awards: Fighter of the Year
It's kinda hard to give it to a guy with only 2 fights, but i have to say GSP.
Aldo had a great year, but i mean, two of the guys he beat don't even have their own Wikipedia pages. Meanwhile, the two guys GSP absolutely dominated were both top 10 p4p, one even top 5.
Lyoto has even less of a case imho. The guy very well might have lost the Rua fight. It's reasonable to say he should be 2-1 this year and no longer the champion. That doesn't scream fighter of the year to me.

Why is it hard? If you fight the best it should count more than fighting no hopers....

Shouldn't Silva be on this as well?
He beat Leites, and then destroyed Forrest in an epic embarrassment.
That said, i'll go GSP.
His destruction of the two best guys that he could face in Penn and Alves was sick.
