WEC 49 (Sunday!)

Post#1 » by cowboyronnie » Sun Jun 20, 2010 2:01 am

A couple last minute changes to opponents for Wineland and Horodecki.

* Kamal Shalorus vs. Jamie Varner
* L.C. Davis vs. Josh Grispi
* Chris Horodecki vs. Danny Downes
* Mark Hominick vs. Yves Jabouin
* Will Campuzano vs. Eddie Wineland

It's out of Edmonton, and evidently that's pulled Horodecki back into the organization for the Canadian content. He desperately needs to win this match. He's otherwise on the wrong end of a lot of WEC highlight reels.

If Hominick wins convincingly, he's in the picture at 145.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

Ya, at least there should be a 4th round IMO, so this doesn't happen...

Thx CBR for making the thread. Forgot the fight was on but was able to catch the re-run a couple hours later. My quick thoughts on the fight...

Kamal Shalorus vs. Jamie Varner
Florian was right, the decision was bogus. Varner is definitely the quicker fighter and more technical boxer. Varner won almost every exchange, though Shalorus had some nice leg kicks especially to the nuts. I was kinda put off when Varner was basically begging the ref to deduct a point of Shalorus, but then again I wasn't the one receiving punishment. Shalorus should have went for the take down earlier and more often. Would've loved to see the fight go 5. Shalorus looks like a physical specimen and may deserve a mention in the sexy body thread.

L.C. Davis vs. Josh Grispi
Not much to say but ended a lot quicker than I thought it would.

Chris Horodecki vs. Danny Downes
Downes looked horrible out there and out of shape tbh. He was completely gassed by
the second round, partly due to all the grappling in the first round but he definitely needs to train more. It was only a matter time before Hordescki won the match. Not sold on Horodecki still.

Mark Hominick vs. Yves Jabouin
Wow. Kickass fight. The second fight where a body shot dropped the opponent. Yves made a nice recovery and knocked down Hominick with a left hook and really looked like he was gonna win. I was surprised Hominick was able to sweep into a mount. Yves must've been exhausted.

Erik Koch vs Caspir
Nice transition on the triangle choke by Koch.

Kerr vs Darabedyan
another quick nice sub. Kerr was so emotional after the fight. I was happy for him.

Will Campuzano vs. Eddie Wineland
Wineland looked great and kinda reminded me of Frank Edgar. The difference in the match was Winelands excellent movements.

For anyone who missed WEC49, I would highly recommend you watch it. It was as good as almost any UFC event I've seen.

WEC event are always that good it seems. The fights never disappoint. The judges do but that's a different story.

Varner was robbed that was horrible, if there wasnt a point deducted he still won the 1st 2 rds easily. That was one of the worst calls ever, even worse than Shogun/Machida 1. Forget a rematch just give Varner a shot a Smooth, that was soooo bogus. All in all it was a awsome card, Varners fight and Hominick/Jab are tied for FOTN both were very entertaining.

Great night of fights. Hominick/Jabouin was sick. I really wanted to see that spinning back kick to the face land. Varner/Shalorus was good until the nutshots and broken bones happened. Something about Varner that attracts controversy. I guess the judges don't like him either.

Varner cannot embrace being the bad guy, being booed hurts him to the point of not even wanting to fight anymore. In the past he has done some pretty lame things, but he did handle the bad descision with class. I know nobody on here likes him but has he sorta changed some opinions based on what you saw last night?

I'll have to watch it again, because I kind of saw the draw coming. I thought Shalorus won rounds 2 and 3, so take the point, and you get a draw. It is a little fishy that one judge had it 29-27 Shalorus and one had it 29-27 for Varner. A rematch somewhere down the road wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Some other good fights on the show. Very impressed by how easily Grispi disposed of LC Davis. I wonder when he will get his shot.

Whatever @ guillotines off TDs. They prove little. Though LC had poor defense.^

Awesome show. Hominick vs Jaboiun was amazing. Mark walked him down in a way you won't see West of Thailand. Why the exclusive use of punches, though? There were a bunch of openings for kicks from Mark. Just awesome. He's 1 fight from a title shot, and - like he said - he is a great match-up for Aldo. He can hang on the feet and defend on the ground.

Completely ridiculous giving Shalarus the draw. Rosenthal has to have taken a second point away, how ridiculous. At the time, it didn't seem like it would matter - no way could the judges jack Varner. But they did, and that point mattered. A third groin strike, that damaging? It's got to be a point.

Shalorus has a beard, good God. I can't believe the punches they were throwing. It was crazy. And what is Varner's leg made of? I thought he would be crippled by the end of the second. He had trouble moving backwards, pushing off, but that's it. Jeez.

He had, like, 8 days to train. It was short notice and since there were other WI fighters going, he got the nod.

I agree that Horodecki's stand-up did not look fantastic. He's too stocky.

Wineland was another guy who just looked so damn crisp. Why are we watching any fights above 145? There are a couple dozen guys below that who move and strike like Anderson Silva.

That's understandable and makes sense.

Agreed. I just started getting into the WEC because before I had the arrogant attitude that the heavier fighters were much more talented and entertaining. I was so wrong. There are so many skilled lighter dudes and they just have much better cardio than the heavier classes. The entire rounds are entertaining and people are always working instead of stalling for breathers. Sometimes I watch round 1 and I think the fighters will have no gas for the second rounds but they just keep going.

WEC is definitely more entertaining than the UFC lightweight division and probably more entertaining as a whole. Maybe I'm goin too far, lol. But I have been watching Versus a lot and there have been so many good fights.

I still generally prefer the UFC for various reasons, but the WEC almost always does come through.

Personally, i don't have a problem with the main event draw. I thought Kamal won the fight for sure. I don't know why the eff he didn't wrestle more though.

If Hominick doesn't get the title shot next, give him Garcia like he asked for. And give Jabouin Korean Zombie.

Yeah, that's the closest thing to a free win in MMA. Good job taking advantage of his mistake, but few high level fighters wouldn't take advantage.

For sure. If someone doesn't make that one mistake of putting their head in the wrong place, then your ability to finish guillotines is completely worthless. It's just not something that matters when you're facing top fighters who won't make that mistake.

There are exceptions. Overeem, for example, doesn't use the guillotine simply off of opponent mistakes and he can sub top fighters with it. Like Vitor. People are not going to cling to sloppy shots against him. It's a weapon for him.
