Mir may not be the best pure grappler, but he really does apply his jiu jitsu very well to MMA, dude has what? 9 submissions in the UFC? And I'm pretty sure that every one of them is a different type of submission.

Mir's really deceptive. He'll half-ass an attempt at something, get his opponent to defend it, half-ass something else, wait for his opponent to adjust, and then crank something else.

Mir's killer instinct when it comes to finishing submissions is incredible. His positioning and ability to get a hold of/set up a submission is subpar. But once he gets a decent hold of a sub it's pretty much over. I think he'd be in the 18-25 range of heavyweights if it wasn't for his improved stand up. I think he would lose to a good part(say between 40-60%) of the top 25 right now. That's not to say I think he's overrated, I think he's rated perfectly based on what he has accomplished. I just think he has a ton of defensive deficiencies. He's the type of fighter that can beat anyone standing or on the ground and can lose to anyone standing or on the ground.
I'm cheering for Roy Nelson vs. JDS but if Nelson loses I would love to see him matched up vs. Mir.

Re: Odd tapouts?
I see Mir as a ultra aggressive sub fighter, he plays alot of open gaurd without a gi on which can be very dangerous or very successful. He used a reverse De La Riva to get the knee bar on Brock which is pretty risky, then he tried to play 93 on Brock in the rematch and end up getting in big trouble. Guys like BJ, Maia play it real tight which is what your taught to do WITHOUT a gi on, where as Mir will chance it and bust out some gi principals without a gi, its sink or swim with Mir but that cat is a monster when it comes to finish off his subs. He broke Silvia's arm when he was inches from escaping, that tells you how much crunch he has in his hips.

Those Goundarenko and Haseman fights are unknown classics! I'd never heard of them before.

Love to hate, hate to love is how I view Mir. He can come off as highly professional, well educated in one instance, and act like a total tool in other instances.
I love his subs, though.

How confusing does that have to be, to have someone all of a sudden slide something into your underpants during a fight? Worlds colliding!
