Re: Official UFC 129 (Toronto) Discussion Thread
Aldo clearly felt gassed after the first couple minutes of the fight, saw that Hominick's not going to wilt easily and that it's a 5 round fight, and stopped throwing explosive combos for the sake of much less taxing pitter-patter and head movement. I've never seen an MMA fight fought at such a close distance; those guys were standing directly in front of one another at punching range. It's a credit to both of them that they're so damn skilled at boxing that they can do that with 4 oz gloves on. But Aldo won those exchanges. Hominick went into that fight planning to do nothing but punch, Aldo had to concede to that and give up his muay thai, and still won the stand-up. On the ground, his hips were shot, he couldn't do much. I think that's entirely because of the draining weight cut.
But those first few minutes, God, what an athlete.
He said after the fight he put on too much muscle over the extended lay-off (you could see it in his back) and had to cut more water weight than usual.

Re: Official UFC 129 (Toronto) Discussion Thread
Aldo looked to take that fight to the ground for no other reason other than he was getting hit by Hominck, and he didn't much like it. He knew that he was probably even at best on the feet, and that was just a chance he didn't want to take. Especially when Hominick couldn't do much to prevent a takedown, and on the ground, all he could do was stall and take some punishment for a good 1:30ish until they got stood up again.
But I think if Aldo's comfortable on his feet, he doesn't bother looking for a takedown, and that's a great feather in Hominick's cap. Nobody else has really even come close to doing that. I give Aldo credit for what he was able to do in this fight against a tough guy, but like CPT, he went from invincible to human in this fight... And with Aldo, much like Anderson Silva, it's awfully tough to keep rising when your already nearly impecable. Nowhere else to go but Down.
For me, with GSP, I think he just doesn't like getting hit, and he doesn't have that killer instinct to go along with that. Once Shields started popping him, you saw GSP become alot more reserved. And for me, there's just no excuse for not jumping on shields after cracking him with that head kick... other than that GSP knows that wins him the round, and he doesn't need to take any more risks... it's a strange situation. I love the guy, he's immensly talented and at times, he puts his skill set on display. But he also doesn't have that warrior mentality, does not want to be in a fight for lack of a better term, and as such, always plays it safe, which is frustrating when he clearly has guys on the ropes...

Also lost in the glamour of the big fights was Rory MacDonald.
I really do like the Diaz Bros, but that suplex-takedown was killer.
This kid is young and looks to be one of our best up-and-comers here in Canada.
How did he get so good, so fast? What's his training background?

About 6:30, Dana addresses the main event. Deflection entirely.

been to the event, 500 section but still worth every penny, the atmosphere and almost all fights were good, but unfortunately the main event left this bitter taste in many people. i have talked and listened to so many people, it was almost gonna be one of the best UFC event ever if Jake and GSP did not do 5 rounds of shadow boxing.
i think Dana will not take the chance to offer GSP another main event in Toronto next time. i think the problem which i agree with previous comments " GSP in just in love and obsessed with the champion status" who did not see that coming anyways, Jake has always been a boring fighter anyways, but i had a little hope maybe 56k people would fire GSP's a** little bit, damn i was wrong.
and GSP moving up in weight class will never ever ever happen, the guy wont even take a chance to take down, so you think he is gonna go up and fight Anderson?? Wronggg never gonna happen.

I'm much more of a casual MMA fan than you are, but I have watched certain talented fighters like GSP take this more conservative approach over time. They've made a name for themselves, and choose to play the odds more in the octagon, knowing that their talent will likely prevail in what many fans might consider to be a duller fight. It's kind of hard to blame them.
I wonder if this is kind of a subtle and natural evolutionary thing in MMA/UFC? More money is coming into the sport. You just make more money at the top.

I don't think this is a trend. I think there's a bunch of reasons particular to George and with being on a streak.
GSP's goals are to become the best MMA fighter ever. He's looking past individual fights, in that sense, already imagining a legacy. Every fight is a particular number in a streak, the 9th after 8 straight or whatever. Whereas, a single loss doesn't even set most guys back that far. But losing after 7, 8, 9 straight wins, God, you need to start all over again after years of perfection. Pressure!
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.
