Mayweather dethrones Tiger as top-paid U.S. athlete

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Jul 17, 2012 5:00 pm

Floyd Mayweather has knocked Tiger Woods off his throne.

SI.com has released its annual “Fortunate 50″ list, and for the first time ever, Woods is not on top. The title of highest-paid U.S. athlete goes to Mayweather, who earned $85 million last year with two big pay-per-view fights — and no endorsements.

Woods, at $56.4 million, fell to No. 3 behind rival Phil Mickelson, who earned $60.7 million. It was the first time since SI.com began compiling the list in 2004 that Woods wasn’t on top.

The rest of the top 10:

4. Kobe Bryant, $48.2 million.

5. LeBron James, $45.8 million.

6. Alex Rodriguez, $33.5 million.

7. Peyton Manning, $31 million.

8. Dale Earnhardt Jr., $28.1 million.

9. Derek Jeter, $27.7 million.

10. Larry Fitzgerald, $26.7 million.

But....boxing is dead?!

Floyd is living the life, can't deny it.

Pacquiao would be second here too if they were including international athletes.

Agreed.

Every time I watch 24/7 with Floyd, I think about how I'd love to rob in him in alternate universe.

Boxing isn't dead until Floyd and Pacman retire. Then it is in big time trouble IMO.

He deserves as much credit for his business skill as his boxing.

Boxing isn't dead but it's been regulated to a niche sport.

Hmm, maybe not marketed right.

Still some guys who could at least do half what Floyd's doing down the line.

Alverez is a guy I think could be a star. English lessons, keep winning, great look, great fighter.

I always like how boxing broadcasts still are distant from MMA broadcasts, and that they both have a different feel to them.

Boxing will get smaller, but it's a tradition, it'll always be around.

If order for there to be a next new boxing star, one of these young guys have to step up and legitimately beat Mayweather of Pacquiao. No controversy, just a straight up legit victory.

Oscar was a launching pad for Mayweather and Pacquiao. Even though he was past his prime, Oscar was still the biggest draw in the sport. Those two became legit PPV stars after they beat him. If Canelo somehow manages to beat Floyd Mayweather within the next couple of years, I think he could be that new guy. However, he's not ready yet, but could be in a year and a half.

Khan had the potential to be a legit PPV star, but blew it when he got his ass whooped by Garcia.

The guy closest to becoming the next boxing superstar is JCC jr. If he beats Martinez he puts himself right next to Cotto as a ppv star.
Canelo has all the tools but who knows when he'll fight somebody who actually has a chance in hell
Adrien Broner's got personality to spare, a very appealing fighting style and potentially some pretty exciting fights vs. a Gamboa or Fortuna. And he actually fights in his hometown so he's got a backing.
Kell Brook has a shot to be the new UK boy if he wins the IBF title and then beats Khan

And boxing still needs guys like Ricky Hatton.

Guys you know can never win the big fights and is a tier below the big dogs,
but can sell a fight, has a lot to offer in terms of promotion.

It's a big problem trying to sell fights in North America when both guys cannot speak English.
Outside of fans and hardcores who always buy the PPV, the casuals are what make or break a PPV buyrate.

boxing is far from dead

the heavyweight division is the one that is weak

the klitschko brothers don't bring enough excitement even though they are good boxers
