I think he'd do fairly well at 205. There aren't many elite submission guys there, so he doesn't have that to worry about.

On the other hand, there are a number of guys with good takedown defense who are way better than Sonnen standing.

Would be a fresh set of opponents and lots of interesting fights. If he were to win a few off the bat, I could definitely talk myself into a fight with Jones (if he's still a LHW by then).

Well, I agree that Machida could be a nightmare for Sonnen with his TDD and elite level striking. On the other hand, Machida likes to counter-strike against guy's rythm, and Sonnen doesn't have a rythm. He just bullrushes guys and if he's able to get takedowns against Machida it could be one-sided in Sonnen's favor...as long as Machida doesn't sub Sonnen. Machida's fighting style is very similar to Anderson and Sonnen's style matched up very well with Anderson, although Machida does have much better TDD.

I think it would end up being an ugly fight. Sonnen pressing Machida against the cage without being able to execute takedowns. If he was successful, I think Machida would be able to get back up relatively quickly, Sonnen couldn't bully him like he does some of the other middleweights.

Machida would land early and often as he pulled away from the clinch and wear him down that way. Sonnen would obviously have a much better chance across 3 rounds than 5. I mean anything is possible, but when I think bad matchups for Sonnen at lhw I think Machida and Rashad.

I think Chael is going there because he knows Jones thinks he's a businessman and he's obsessed with his brand.
