How does a top 10 guy, under 30, become a free agent and end up fighting in Singapore against a guy without a Wikipedia page?

I know interest wasn't particularly high from the major US promotions, but at what point does the blame fall on the fighter?

Well the UFC wouldn't take him, and he was willing to fight for free if he lost. But he probably made a mistake leaving Bellator and/or not going to the WSOF.

You can blame Askren for not signing with wsof, for sure. That's the one he could potentially regret. IDK.

He did everything to be in the ufc but he doesn't bang bro so they said no. As for bellator, its hard to blame him for wanting out of there. He was setting records for amount of punches landed to the face of their best guys. Although it could probably be argued that if he couldn't get up for those guys then how can he get up for these guys that nobody has ever heard of in onefc?

Bakhtiyar Abbasov is ranked 126th at MW. Would have been great for this year's TUF if he spoke English. Seriously though, apparently he's a sambo champion from Аzerbaijan, maybe he can wrestle.

I seem to recall there being interest from WSOF, so if that was real, he made a mistake passing there. A handful of guys there that would be among the bigger names on his resume.

Search "Askren debiut w ONE FC" (keep the typo) and click the dailymotion link.

Seems like Ben was kind of playing with fire by putting his near knee down between the guy's legs when his opponent was turtled. Wasn't this dude a decently bigtime combat sambo guy? Seems like he could have rolled for a kneebar pretty easily there. I guess easier said than done when you have Ben Askren playing patty cake with your face about 80 times a minute.

Thanks, probably correct spelling was my downfall.

Holy Jebus!

His opponent was (I've heard) a champion Sambo guy, but Askren controls fighters from positions you just don't see fighters getting controlled from, his wrestling style is fairly unique.

It would have been interesting though if he did that with Palhares.

Yea, it looked like his opponent attacked a heel hook at one point too.

OK so Ben is now the ONE FC Welterweight Champion, winning the one day on a 84 second first round KO, (yes a ko - not a choke-out). and the UFC is again open to signing him. Not sure how long he will hang out with the FC, but Dana needs to step up and pay this guy!

He's still got 4 fights on his One FC contract. Of course he could do those in one night considering the competition...

Dana said at the scrum if Ben Askren keeps winning, he could possibly fight in the ufc.
