Meisha Tate's rear-naked choke against the great Holly Holm.

I hesitate to give sub of the year to a RNC, but Maia deserves it as a lifetime achievement award.
Again, videos/GIFs would be helpful here.

Maia is my guy, but it's hard to not give it to Tate for the sheer magnitude of the moment. Needing a finish to win the fight, she pulled it out near the buzzer. For the title.

Re: 2016 MMA Submission of the Year (Poll)
I gave it to Maia because making a bb level dude in Condit look like a whitebelt is crazy.
I can see an argument for Meisha because it was for the title. That said, Holm isn't good on the ground so it diminishes it a little for me.
I could also see an argument for Dern for pulling out some ibjjf sh* in mma, she may as well have berimboloed first. That said, I think the fact that she missed weight diminishes that one and I can't vote for it.

Re: 2016 MMA Submission of the Year (Poll)
One submission I was just reminded of that I had forgotten about that should absolutely be on this list is Rothwell's "gogo choke" vs Barnett. It hits 2 of the 3 major criteria IMO in the sense that 1) it was a unique and technical submission, 2) it was against a ridiculously adept grappler, one who had never been submitted in mma and one who had extensive grappling accomplishments in metamoris, adcc, etc. The only criterion that it didn't hit was stakes, although tbh if Rothwell hadn't lost to JDS it would probably feel more important than it does now.
