Small little anecdote I thought I'd share: Mike Biggie Rhodes came to train with us tonight. He was recently cut by the ufc and has another fight next month. I'm assuming he just wants to get some new looks to tighten up his ground game (plus I'm guessing several of his training partners are out of commission at the moment :( ). He was training gi which I thought was interesting, seemed like a cool guy. He's a purple belt.

ADCC 2015 confirmed it will be in Sao Paulo. Three super fights:
Cyborg Abreu vs Andre Galvao
Matt Hughes vs Renzo Gracie
Mario Sperry vs Ricardo Liborio

BJJ nerds will be excited about Liborio. He isn't too far below Rickson in bjj lore. lol.

I know its hard to, with all the march madness going on, but has anyone taken any time to watch the ncaa wrestling championships? Actually has been covered a decent amount by espn. Pretty cool to see people care about and cover grappling.

edit: anddd we have only the 4th ever ncaa 4 time champion. Logan Stieber.

I watched most of the semi-finals and finals. The wrong OSU won. Cool to get another four time champion.

Creepy Joe Lauzon will face Dillon Danis at the next metamoris. Danis is a great grappler who has been tearing up the brown belt ranks, star pupil of Marcelo Garcia. Also I'm a huge Lauzon fan and it will be great to see him compete without taking brain damage. Sweet.

Looks like Cyborg Abreu will match Josh Barnett for the 'hw title' at metamoris. Pretty cool. I do admit that I kind of wanted to see Buchecha surf on Barnett's head for 20 minutes, but the Cyborg match is interesting in that I have no idea how that plays out. Cool.

Anyway, full card:
Barnett/Cyborg
Sonnen/Babalu
Danis/Lauzon
Xande Ribeiro/Keenan
Clark Gracie/Roberto Satoshi
Monson (ugh) / the HW tournament champion

Surprised Tonon isn't back.

Any BJJ people getting tired of the MMA crossovers?

I'm seeing it a little. My thing is we get bjj guys vs bjj guys all the time, the mma guys are the people who sell the shows so whatever. My personal favorite matches are bjj matchups that we usually don't see. I'd love to see Maia vs Braulio or something. Roger vs Buchecha was unbelievable.

The reaction to Sonnen/Babalu has been OVERHWELMINGLY negative, as in, unanimously...nobody cares. Additionally, nobody cares about Kevin Casey and I think people are sick of Vinny Magalhaes and his lazy grappling as well.

However there has been nothing but excitement for Cyborg/Barnett and I'd say most are excited for Lauzon/Danis.

Little bit of bjj drama going on. As some of you know, Eddie Bravo has a fun little submission only tournament that he does now. I guess Ralek and the Gracies (metamoris owners) are not happy with another promotion getting attention, so they decided to try to get Gary Tonon and Marcelo Mafra - two big name guys that Eddie netted for his competition - to no show Eddie's event and sign exclusive deals with them. Marcelo Mafra said yes, Tonon said no. Seems like it was originally Tonon vs Lauzon at metamoris which would have been bananas but Ralek pulled the plug on Tonon when he wouldn't no show and sign the exclusive deal with them.

God that is going to be really annoying if grapplers start signing exclusive deals with promoters. What's the point? I don't see how it would ever benefit anyone but the promoter, especially with how infrequent these events are. I just don't like that branch of the Gracie family at all, ugh.

Here is Tonon's statement:

Jesus. Eddie and Ralek need to crush this beef and do what's best for the sport. IMO, there's some room for this in the American culture as a decently big sport if marketed correctly, I'd hate to see it fail before it even starts to take off because of this stupidity.

Yea so I'm not a fan of Eddie or 10th planet. That said, Eddie would have never done anything like this and as far as I know there is no beef on his end. Gracies just gonna Gracie.

Rogan weighs in on metamoris:

That’s pathetic. I will not support them now. They also don’t hold nearly enough events for athletes to stay sharp enough to compete at their best if they competed exclusively for them. This is a horrible way to approach what has the potential to be a huge sport.

Am I the only one who sees a old pro wrestling (catch as catch can, not Hulk Hogan) element to this. Back in the day, that stuff was wildly popular.

I wonder how sports are going to change over the next 25 years with concussions becoming such a big issue. I personally like watching MMA, Football and Hockey but it's tough knowing that these dudes are pretty much destroying their bodies/minds for this.

Back to the drama:

Nobody is talking about this in the media. If they were, I'd be fine with it but if you're doing stupid **** and not even getting press in the MMA media, you're stupid. Rener should know better, Garry is 23.

LOL @ offering someone 140k/year to grapple, and lol @ offering 12 competitions/year when you have had 5 shows in like 3 years so far.

That would make Gary Tonon like the 4th highest paid ufc fighter, minus the brain damage

FWIW I don't have any issue with metamoris signing guys to exclusive contracts. I DON'T think its good for the sport (their stated mission) but a business deal between two parties isn't my business.

My issue is trying to coerce/bribe dudes to abandon other tournaments on the eve of the tournament. That's just dirty and unfair to both the other tournament and the grapplers themselves, especially if they felt like they had to ditch the other tourney to ever get another shot in metamoris.

Not that anyone at all seems to care about this, but I'll post it anyway just in case. Long story short, besides metamoris and eddie bravo invitational (EBI), there is also copa podio as a submission only ppv event.

For the second time straight, copa podio scheduled an event, and metamoris later announced that they would hold their event at the exact same time and date, obviously competing with them for buys.

So this time, copa podio just announced that as a response to metamoris, they will be offering their streaming event for free. It will be interesting to see if that affects buys for meta, as there are lots of high level guys in copa podio.

Tonnon alluded to it - but didn't name Metam - on Rogan from the 21st. They all agreed terrible idea.

Any Canadians reading this...what is fight network? I'm hearing its some Canadian cable tv channel?

Anyway, kind of funny in the midst of all this Metamoris vs EBI drama...apparently Copa Podio just signed the first bjj promotion/cable network deal with this Fight Network.
