Bonnar was retired as far as we/he knew, and was called with 3 weeks notice. He claims he was taking the steroid (to recover from injury? sorry his voice is muffled on the podcast) and then stopped immediately when he knew about the fight (or awhile before? again sorry). He shouldn't have accepted the fight, obviously, and he probably shouldn't have been juicing, but it is interesting to put things in perspective. Seems like everyone starts juicing, legally or illegally, when they hear Anderson Silva's name, but he may have actually stopped when he heard it brought up. I'm assuming he isn't dumb enough to start just a week or two out from the fight.

Right, interesting. Good, cos Stephen seems a great guy. And it sucks that that tarnishes the courage he showed taking that fight - close to a no win situation, short notice, out of retirement, injured, in effing Brazil.

I know he also got popped for the second fight with Griffin.

Dr. Johnny Benjamin on Struve:

"Many people think, and Stefan will probably think, 'The doctor said I'm good to go, so I'll get right back in the gym and go at it,' but, even though we're great at healing bones, it's not so easy to heal the brain. How many times has he been knocked out? I know he's a young man, but he's been knocked out more than a few times. At some point, someone really needs to ask the question, should he still be fighting? That many concussions, so quickly, and at this young age ... a person has two types of age, chronological and physiologic age. Stefan's license may say he's 25, but in physiologic years, he's much, much older than that, with all the concussive force that he's sustained. I'm sure nobody will like to hear this, but Stefan Struve really needs to think about retiring. If it's not him that will make that decision, then Dana White needs to start talking to him about retiring. The question out there is how many sustained concussions is too many, and according to the latest literature that's coming out, the answer is starting to look like it's somewhere between two and three. That's where you start having permanent changes. Knowing that data, Stefan is definitely beyond that number, and someone really needs to initiate serious discussion with either him or his promoter that he probably needs to do something else for a living."

Okay, Hunt's young son on the mmahour yelling that his dad eats kfc everyday is just priceless (again, I think that's what he said).

I've thought this for awhile now, and was told it was silly. Hopefully he takes this advice from a medical professional. I'd be really surprised if he isn't already in for some major cognitive issues down the line, much less if he keeps getting into the cage with behemonths intent on taking his head off.

I don't know if they have too many 40, 50-something retired boxers in Holland, but Stefan needs to spend some time with a few. Or watch interviews with Meldrick Taylor. It's more than just slurred speech and cognition, it's depression and frustration too, and really sad stuff.

One interesting thing is K-1, though, especially the pre-Spong/Reem generation. Guys like Sefo, Kruth, JLB, etc, have been knocked out probably a half dozen times each officially, plus however many times in training. Hunt's been KO'd once plus years after years after years of absorbing heavy shots and two off the top of my head that would have KO'd anyone else. None of these dudes look as haggard/regularly glassy eyed as Chuck, Keith Jardine, or Rich. Sefo's in better cognitive health than Chuck, for sure.

Sefo, JLB, Hunt...the hips and neck/shoulder girdles on those MFers are so massive and strong. That might have a lot to do with it. Your brain is not absorbing nearly as much.

George Chuvalo, the HW boxer (Foreman, Alix2, Frazier, etc, etc..) never got KDd and has seemingly few cognitive problems despite the fact he took tremendous abuse during his training/career, and he credits it to his build (largely his neck/shoulder girdle). He is also built exactly like those particular K1 guys. So it might be physiology.

You succeeded in that era of K1 cos you could take one to give one, they were looking for durable...well, physiology.

Just read on sherdog that there are a pair of brothers fighting each other at the next mfc event.

I feel...funny, thinking about that.

The concussion discussion was really big 6 years ago when WWE wrestler Chris Beniot killed his family and himself. He had sustained dozens of concussions and it was rumored that they heavily attributed to his downward spiral of depression and just pure crazy state of mind.
After that you had Crosby and others getting concussions in the mainstream sports and the study really picked up steam.

All I can say is I hope Struve listens to the Dr.'s. I know it would be hard to hear, and even harder to imagine starting a new life in the work force at this point in his career, but he's in his mid 20's with some solid bankroll and a somewhat relevant name to work off. He could start a gym, go back to school, he still has a life ahead of him and (what's left) of his wits...the same might not be able to be said in 3-4 years.

Ya, I'm not a fan of that, mostly because I only can picture two backwoods kids trying to make small cash fighting each other taking that fight.
I can't picture anyone with dignity taking that fight.

Although, after reading that review on his book, I could picture Matt Hughes fighting his brother, and chalking it up to 'testing who the better brother is', or some machismo factor.

Apparently, the Lauzon brothers used to fight at family picnics.

I know for a fact I've watched videos online of the Lauzons going at it. It was back when Dan was in the ufc (so forever ago), so I can't remember if they were just fighting, or rolling/sparring and it ended up serious or what.

Rogan's getting into it with Richard Dawkins on twitter about abortion. He's a pro-lifer, which is surprising.

Rogan or Dawkins? Either way, I can't possibly conceive of Rogan beating Dawkins in an argument.

As for the brothers fighting each other, I like it for 2 reasons. First, I like it when friends/training partners/brothers say that they'll fight each other. I like it when Cowboy and Guillard agreed to fight, when Sonnen and Munoz agreed to fight each other, when Machida and Shogun agreed to fight, ect. I hate when Cormier/Cain, Silva/Machida, and Fitch/Koscheck wouldn't fight each other.

Secondly, as a younger sibling, I can appreciate the sibling rivalry. Whether it's chess, basketball, or a video game, I care more about beating my brother than anyone else. I truly believe that Michael Jordan would not have been good enough to make the NBA had he not been raised in a competitive household where his older brother was always beating him in basketball.
