Forgot to post on Friday that the NSAC tabled Antonio Margarito's application for a boxing license, telling him that he should reapply for a license first in California before Nevada. It wasn't outright denied, so he still can reapply. If denied, he'd have to wait 12 months.

Apparently, Margarito was going to have a big fight in the fall if he got the license, possibly a rematch with Cotto or a fight with Pacquaio in the works. This certainly hurts his chances of fighting in the U.S. in 2010.

I am torn by Angulo - I always love watching is fight and he seems to take care of business but he doesn't seem to have the talent hang with the big boy of the division.

Yeah his movement is really bad. He just bulldozes his way and pummels while taking really good shots. He is exciting though.

Bradley did well last night, but I'd rather he go back to 140 and settle everything there.

Spoiler of FNF:

Judah is as stylish and as exciting as just about anyone in the sport. Just beautiful. You can't help but watch him.

A counter-upper cut KD/KO!? Sheeeeeeeeet.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

Not sure what's up with Judah, whether its bad management or fighters avoiding him or whatever but he's rarely fought these last few years. He's a nice contender at 140 if he can get the fights.

Agree on Angulo, he doesn't look great or anything but his style is definitely made for TV.

Bradley/Alexander needs to be made early next year. I'd slightly favor Alexander based on watching those 2 but it'll be a close contest.

Blame Shower Doors for that...

Former undisputed welterweight champion Zab Judah suffered a right arm injury this week, forcing his May 31 fight against fellow former champ Shane Mosley to be postponed on Thursday.

Judah needed 50 stitches in his right arm after slipping in his Las Vegas bathroom and smashing it through a glass shower door.

"Zab had an accident. He cut his right arm up pretty bad," Golden Boy Promotions chief operating officer David Itskowich said. "He slipped and he went to brace himself on a glass door and his arm went through it. I saw his arm. It looked pretty bad."

Judah was advised by his doctor not to train for at least four weeks.

I was talking more about the inactivity between the Clottey fight and Santa Cruz. The only fight until Santa Cruz was against some club fighter back in October or November. Hopefully now he'll be more active and challenge one of the guys at 140.

Wladimir Klitschko to face Samuel Peter on September 11th in Frankfurt, Germany. Alexander Povetkin pulled out of the title match and was a no-show for the news conference last week.

Dan Rafael's weekend notebook, July 23rd

Among the potential major fights at junior welterweight, a Timothy Bradley-Devon Alexander showdown is on top of HBO's wish list for Jan. 29. Gary Shaw, Bradley's promoter, said he's already far down the road in talks with HBO. Alexander, of course, needs to beat Andreas Kotelnik on HBO next week. Shaw said the deal would get done with the network making separate agreements with him for Bradley and with Alexander promoter Don King. "This is one of those deals where they'll pay Devon's side what they'll pay and pay our side what they'll pay and Don and I will split everything else. I'm not dealing with King on money. The easiest way to make this fights is for HBO to deal with each of us independently." Shaw added, however, that if he got a call from Golden Boy for Bradley to face Amir Khan or Marcos Maidana at the end of the year, he would consider an interim fight. "I would want to do the fight and still do the Devon fight in January," Shaw said, assuming a Bradley victory if there is an interim bout. "To me the beauty is that it's a throwback to the old days when guys fought often and they fought names often," Shaw said. "The fans are the real winners. If there is anything that would get Timmy the notoriety he wants, that's it. You beat Maidana or Khan in the fall and then you beat Alexander in January and I think you're right there for a Mayweather or Pacquiao kind of fight."

HBO is holding Dec. 11 for Khan's next fight. The junior welterweight titlist will be in Las Vegas for the Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz rematch on July 31, and if Marquez wins, Golden Boy is hoping to match him and Khan, a fight both boxers are interested in. However, Khan is also interested in facing Bradley, who named Khan as an opponent he'd like to fight after he dispatched Luis Carlos Abregu in his HBO debut on Saturday.

Although Top Rank plans to match lightweight titlist Humberto Soto against Marco Antonio Barrera late this year or early next year, both will have interim bouts in Mexico. Soto is slated to headline "Top Rank Live" (Fox Sports en Espanol) Sept. 4 against Urbano Antillon (28-1, 20 KOs), who has won two in a row since his upset ninth-round knockout loss to Miguel Acosta in an interim title bout in July '09. "How could it not be a good fight," Top Rank's Moretti said. "It's in Mexico with two Mexicans. It's a great fight for 'Top Rank Live.'" Barrera, meanwhile, is scheduled to face former titleholder David Diaz on Sept. 15 (Mexican Independence Day).

Also in the notebook, Sergio Martinez vs. Alfredo Angulo at 154 is being discussed but HBO reportedly is more interested in Martinez facing off with Paul Williams in a rematch. Martinez promoter, Lou DiBella, said that Williams won't take anything less than 50-50 and would shop Martinez-Angulo to Showtime if HBO passes.

I agree. Angulo doesn't strike me as a guy who can beat a big name.

Alexander's turn to showcase this week.

Not a tripleheader on HBO, Spikes/Bundrage is untelevised(maybe a good thing). Other fight is Tavoris Cloud/Glen Johnson.

Good night of fights on HBO last night, albeit with one fight having an obvious bad scorecard.

Cloud/Johnson was a tough fight and both were winded late, especially Johnson. Cloud looked impressive in spurts but didn't keep it up consistently. Johnson did very good work inside but didn't have anything left in the last couple rounds. Scores were wide by a round or so(116-112 on all 3) but I think Cloud did enough to squeak by. HBO's judge Harold Lederman had it a draw. Looks like Cloud will face the winner of next week's fight between Pascal/Dawson. A fight with Pascal is even money but Dawson wins wide against him imo.

I thought Devon Alexander lost a close decision, Lederman and the 3 judges scored it pretty wide for him. I don't know what fight they were watching. Yes, Alexander threw 1100 punches but he didn't land 15-20% of them and Kotelnik kept catching him. As long as Alexander/Bradley gets made! I've changed my tune on that fight and see Bradley winning, that should be a real good fight to watch. Kotelnik is now a legit name in the 140 lb. division with that performance, even though hardcore fans sort of knew that already. Damn, this division is deep.

I agree GSwarrior, I had Alexander losing that fight also. I didn't catch the first fight though so I can't say anything about that one.

Not a fan of Cloud's, but like you, I had him doing enough to squeak by. Looking at Johnson, you could tell he's 41. Looking at him box though, I would say mid-thirties. Not a bad fight. Cloud just kept throwing hard flurries that didn't amount to much, except the round where he almost got him. It was because of those flurries though that Johnson gained the upper hand in a few rounds when Cloud was tired from those flurries. Cloud was lucky to fight an aging Johnson, who looked more winded in the 11th and 12th.

Basically, you have judges who look for more accurate, hard shots and judges that love work. I think the three judges were the latter. Alexander threw more, but also took more damage. Tough to score.

Kellerman brought up an interesting point. Alexander didn't make himself feared against Kotelnik. It could be much easier to make a fight between him and Bradley (I loved the shirt at the end also).

Kotelnik, even with the losses in his record, has fought three of the top four in the division and even managed a victory against Maidana. I have A LOT of respect for him.

Chad Dawson/Jean Pascal in Pascal's hometown of Montreal tomorrow night on HBO for 175 lb. Ring title. I think Pascal makes Dawson fight, thus Dawson going for the KO. He's got more skill and he's going to have a size advantage over Pascal. No televised undercard for this one.

Cristobal Arreola on ESPN2's FNF tonight in a fight where he'll likely score a KO. We'll see if ESPN allows a postfight interview. BTW, Arreola weighed in at 256.

Other fights tomorrow: Ji-Hoon Kim vs Miguel Vazquez on Top Rank Live(FSN/CSN for most, Fox Espanol for all) for a vacant lightweight title. Should be a fun fight to watch.

Anselmo Moreno vs Nehomar Cermeno II in Panama for a bantamweight title. 118 is a deep, talented division and these 2 are supposedly in that class. Haven't seen either fight but this fight is available free, legal stream at http://www.tvmax-9.com/live_deportes.asp.

Quick notes on other boxing news(from ESPN):

- Alfredo Angulo reportedly turned down $900,000 to fight middleweight champ Sergio Martinez on October 2nd. The rejected offer stunned his promoter, Gary Shaw. Sergio Martinez will now likely face Paul Williams in a rematch.

- Miguel Cotto is closing in on an agreement to defend his 154 lb. crown against JC Chavez, Jr. on December 4th in New York. MSG will be the venue and it will be on PPV.

Only one command to Chad Dawson would change what's happening to him: Pull the damn trigger.

Damn what a really bad cut and really bad timing since Dawson might have knocked him down (Anyone see the left uppercut that stopped him in his tracks?). He put himself in that position though. Had Dawson been as half as aggressive three or four rounds earlier, he would've KOed Pascal. Let's see what the judges say...and they agreed. Pascal is the new lineal light heavyweight champion.
