De La Hoya-Cotto talks
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer and Top Rank's Bob Arum met last week in Los Angeles to open negotiations for a possible Dec. 6 fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto, Arum told ESPN.com.
De La Hoya has announced that it will be the last fight of his career. Cotto would have to defeat Antonio Margarito in their welterweight title bout July 26.

"Good news, Miguel: There's a chance you'll be fighting Oscar De La Hoya next!"
"I met with Schaefer for lunch in Los Angeles and we had a nice conversation for an opening conversation," Arum said.
Arum said Schaefer made him an opening offer, although he would not go into details on the numbers.
"Oscar told Richard we should wait for the Cotto-Margarito fight to talk place to see how well it does," Arum said. "If Cotto-Margarito does Cotto-[Zab] Judah pay-per-view numbers (about 200,000 buys) then we're in one place. If it does Cotto-[Shane] Mosley numbers [about 350,000 buys] then we're another place. And if it goes higher than 400,000, which I believe it will, then we are in a third place. The only way I could have solidified a deal at that lunch meeting was to accept the lowest possible number, which I was not prepared to do. It was a low offer, but I understand why it was low. But it was a real offer. It wasn't for show."

Excellent read...
Excellent read...
To David and Manny,
Good luck to both of you this Saturday. I know alot of folks are predicting Manny to win this with ease, but I also know it ain't gonna happen that easily. But that's neither here nor there. I'm writing this letter because I want the winner of your fight to really consider the history that could be made by fighting the winner of my September 13th fight with Joan Guzman, which of course I am confident will be meAnyways, the winner of your fight in meeting the winner of my fight has the chance to do something that has only been done once in the history of boxing. A complete unification of the IBF,WBO, WBC, and WBA world titles. The only other person in history to accomplish that feat was Bernard Hopkins. Roy never did it. Oscar never did it. Floyd never did it. Nobody except Bernard ever did it.
And that's not to say we would be better than those guys, or anything like that, but we do have the opportunity to do something that they never did. So lets truly make the effort, for the sake of history, to make a fight between us a reality, before mandatories, or other economic realities prevent the titles from staying together. We all know there is plenty of money to go around, and let's face it, all of us are financially ok already anyways, so for once, let's NOT make it about the money, and lets do whats right for boxing. We have a chance to make a complete unification happen. Lets not let money, or our promoters, or anything else get in the way of that.
As much as I love Don and Terry, I have no problem telling both of them that after the Guzman fight, they don't need to bother sending me any bout agreements that don't have either David or Manny's name on it (whoever wins). And both of you could tell Bob the same thing. Don't forget that these guys are supposed to work for US, not the other way around. And specifically to David, I know a fight with Manny would mean alot more $$ than a fight with you would, but if you win on Saturday, everything I have said here still stands.
This chance to make history and unify all four world titles is bigger than you and me. Alot bigger. And even though it might not be for a ton of money, we still would need to fight, and not let this opportunity get away. It's about history. It's about being the second man in the history of boxing to do this. And so to whichever of you guys wins on Saturday, don't forget what this sport has given you, and understand that sometimes something needs to be given back. Relax a while, enjoy your victory, spend time with your family, and then tell Bob that the only fight you are interested in is the Campbell-Guzman winner. We can always make money, but it's not too often that we get the chance to make history.
Nate Campbell
IBF / WBO / WBA Lightweight Champion

Much props for Campbell for saying that...
Boxers for the most part once they reach the elite level are set for life, unlike MMA fighters.

It it sort of self-serving, though. I mean, while the winner of Pac/Diaz fighting Nate is not the most lucrative for THEM, Nate fighting the winner of Pac/Diaz is the most lucrative for him.
Who is he trying to dissuade them from fighting that would be bigger money anyway? Khan? Katsidis?
Oooooooooh, I bet he's concerned about Pac moving up in weight. Uh huh.

Well there is Marquez for PacMan for a rematch, and we know that is a very good PPV...
Casamayor/Ring titlist... eeh. Could be a great fight considering he is a counter puncher like Marquez.
Then there is going up in weight.
A Hatton/PacMan fight would do at least 1.5 million PPV buys.

I doubt there's any concern about Casamayor. Guy's boring and a billygoat. Uniting the titles with Nate would be a lot better payday.
I had forgotten about a trilogy with JMM. Yeah, But ugh. I hope not.

Well the Marquez/Casamayor fight is on by the way... I don't really like the idea of two counterpunchers going at it but Marquez seems more willing to let his hands go nowadays.

Not worth buying, no title, at 154, and piss poor quality opponent for Mosley... Mosley willl win with a KO.
If you want to see fireworks, lets see Mayorga vs Miranda at 160.

Re: The Official Boxing Thread
I just wanna see a fight where 2 huge superstars go at it. Hoya vs Mayweather would have been good but it aint happening no more. I hate watching fights where one boxer has a complete advantage over the next, its a waste of time.

Re: The Official Boxing Thread
The Nevada State Athletic Commission is waiting for medical records of World Boxing Association super featherweight champion Edwin Valero who is being lined up for a title fight with newly crowned WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao in November, hopefully in Las Vegas.
Arum believes the Pacquiao-Valero fight would be a blockbuster showdown since Valero is undefeated with 24 knockouts in 24 fights, 19 in the first round. He said “I don’t know whether it will be Manny’s most difficult fight but certainly it will be his most dangerous fight. He (Valero) is dangerous as hell.”
Valero who like Pacquiao has had problems making the super featherweight limit would move up to lightweight to challenge Pacquiao.
Arum noted that Valero who was refused a license to fight in the US in 2004 after a bad motorcycle accident in 2001 where he underwent brain surgery had been cleared to fight by the Texas commission. Arum said he was hoping that the Nevada State Athletic Commission would follow the example of Texas and allow Valero to fight in the boxing capital of the world.
Meantime, the respected editor-in-chief of Ring Magazine regarded as the “:Bible of Boxing” says that if Juan Manuel Marquez is successful in his upcoming battle with WBA lightweight champion Joel Casamayor “it would create a perfect scenario for another Pacquiao-Marquez showdown.” However, Collins said that talking about a third Pacquiao-Marquez fight may be premature since Casamayor “is no easy fight for anybody.”
Collins said the much talked about fight with Britain’s Ricky “Hitman” Hatton at 140 pounds would be “another great opportunity” for Pacquiao provided Hatton gets by Paul Malignaggi in his next scheduled bout. Collins said that if the Pacquiao-Hatton fight pushes through he would give Pacquiao “an excellent chance of winning.”
He said that overall Pacquiao is in “a great position with quality opponents in three divisions clambering to get a shot at him and the next two years could bring him his biggest paydays ever.”
The Ring Magazine editor-in-chief said that anybody who did not think that Pacquiao was No.1 pound-for-pound “should have been convinced by his brilliant performance against David Diaz.”
