Re: The Official Boxing Thread
yeah Torres was ktfo. I want to see a trilogy
If Holt was Knocked out during the 2nd knockout Torres could have been Dq'd because he threw a solid punch when Holt was getting up

I didn't see it watching "live" until the replays. That was a mean headbutt, it really set up that right.

LAS VEGAS — The Francisco Lorenzo Saga continues.
Referee Joe Cortez, who is on vacation in Hawaii, defended his actions in Saturday's bout for the WBC interim super featherweight championship at Mandalay Bay between Lorenzo and Humberto Soto.
Cortez disqualified Soto for an illegal blow to the back of the head of a downed opponent in the fourth round, giving Lorenzo a controversial win. But the WBC refused to recognize Lorenzo as the champion because president Jose Sulaiman believed the Lorenzo overdramatized the effects of the blow.
Cortez said Thursday the rulebook provides no leeway and he had no choice to disqualify Soto and give the win to Lorenzo. Cortez said he felt the punch in question that landed was a solid blow.
"But it wouldn't matter, even if it were a tap, an illegal punch to the back of the head is an illegal punch and I have to enforce the rules," Cortez said.
After the punch, Cortez called time and ringside physician David Watson examined Lorenzo. Cortez said Watson told him that Lorenzo had received "a concussive blow to the back of the head" and could not continue.
"What am I going to do, overrule the doctor?" Cortez said. "If the doctor says it's a concussive blow, I can't overrule him."
Cortez also disputed a contention that he had made a mistake earlier in the round by momentarily jumping between Soto and Lorenzo as Soto was going for the finish. He said he jumped in because he believed the fighters were about to clinch, but when he saw they did not, he spun away and let the action continue.
Cortez was unhappy that he was being singled out for blame when he was doing his job and enforcing the rules.
"The fighter is the one who threw the illegal punch to the back of the head, not me," Cortez said. "The doctor ruled it was a concussive blow to the back of the head. And when I have a situation where it's an illegal punch and the fighter can't continue, the only choice a referee has is to enforce the rules and call the disqualification."Re: The Official Boxing Thread

I just find it funny what Cortez is saying about the blow to the head. If it was that bad, why was Lorezo not attended to during his review process. The guy was just laying there.

It has been several days since the Holt/Torres fight and I have to give massive props to Torres. He never once mentioned the headbutt.

Re: The Official Boxing Thread
The two fights are make or break fights.
Diaz needs to rebound from the upset of the year.
Katsidis needs to recover from being KO when being ahead
Juarez needs to get a solid w given that every time he has faced a good opponent, he has failed. He should have won in the first MAB fight. His best win has been vs Zahir Raheem. I can't believe all the chances he has had already to make his mark.
Barrios needs to get a solid win after his disappointing loss vs Guzman. He didn't even make weight in that fight and lost the title before even stepping in the ring. He also always looks stupid with his glasses.

In previous seasons, "The Contender," which is co-produced by reality series hitmaker Mark Burnett and powerhouse DreamWorks Television, has focused on junior middleweights, middleweights and super middleweights. However, the new season will feature a 16-man tournament of cruiserweights (200 pounds), in which American fighters will face a team of international boxers.
Trainer Buddy McGirt will return to the series to coach the American fighters. The international trainer has not been determined, although series producers are interested in including Wales' Enzo Calzaghe, the father and trainer of light heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe.
Boxing icon Sugar Ray Leonard, host of the series for the first three seasons, also is expected to return.
Although the field of fighters has not been signed, show executives are talking to promoters of several notable cruiserweights, with former undisputed champion O'Neil Bell the most prominent name among them.
"They've called me and I've spoken to them and I spoke to O'Neil and we're all going to talk about a deal," said Leon Margules of Seminole Warriors Boxing, Bell's promoter.
Others in the mix include Vadim Tokarev, B.J. Flores, Darnell "Ding-A-Ling Man" Wilson, Matt Godfrey, Johnathon Banks, Aaron Williams, Shawn Hawk, Emmanuel Nwodo, Ola Afolabi, Ehinomen Ehikhamenor and Mike Alexander.
I am kinda sad that the show isn't going to be on ESPN but on Versus.
Thoughts about the division? I would rather have them do heavyweights....
O'neil even at his advanced age should clean up the show. He is a world class fighter and shouldn't be with unproven guys.

Someone wants to get killed...
Going up two division vs the legit champ... what is Williams thinking? He isn't even the a top 3 welterweight. I say stoppage in the 2nd round.
By Mark Vester
According to Top Rank head Bob Arum, a deal has been reached for WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (34-0, 30 KOs) to face WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams (34-1, 25 KOs) on September 27 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Arum tells MaxBoxing/BoxingScene.com's Steve Kim that he reached a deal with Williams' promoter Dan Goossen, but was still optimistic about the fighting being finalized.
"I'm dealing with Goossen, it's a deal. But I'm not sure," said Arum. "You never know if it's a deal. I think there is a deal. But if my life depended on it, I wouldn't swear to it. With Goossen, you're never quite sure."
If the deal gets done, Williams, who is listed as 6'1, but most say is 6'2 or '6'3, would move up in weight by 13-pounds to meet Pavlik at 160.
A variety of options were exhausted while trying to secure a September opponent. Arums says WBC junior middleweight champion Sergio Mora priced himself out, as did Winky Wright. Williams was initially, according to Arum, demanding as much as $2.5 million for the fight. Either he came down quite a bit or HBO offered more money to make it happen. Pavlik's manager Cameron Dunkin recently told Dan Rafael that HBO had a lot of interest in a Pavlik-Williams fight.
"I think it's a hard style and a tough fight, but it's a good fight," Dunkin said. "Kelly will have to be really, really prepared. Paul Williams is a tough fighter. He's probably better suited for (middleweight) than welterweight anyway. He's not a little guy moving up. I like the fight, HBO likes the fight."

Pacman vs another Mexican fighter.
By Ronnie Nathanielsz
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says that rather than get delayed over obtaining the medical clearance of WBA super featherweight champion Edwin Valero from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, he plans to pit Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao against Humberto Soto (47-7-2, 28 KO's) at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas on November 15.
In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Arum said "a lot of people feel we are better off to go to a Soto fight and if Valero gets cleared put him on the undercard. ." At the same time Arum indicated that since he handles Soto, it wouldn't be a problem to make the fight happen.
Arum indicated that should Pacquiao beat Soto and Valero fights on the card and wins, then he’ll make a Pacquiao-Valero lightweight title fight later on.

Thomaz Adamek on ESPN for a showcase fight in Chicago. All his fights are eye candy.
I am surprised how good he looked in his last fight when he went up in weight... should be a easy KO W for him.
