No, man, that Gomi pick is legit. You were around MMA when that run happened, CPT. Gomi in Bushido was glorious.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

I meant I'm behind the Gomi pick, and I already defended the Rashad pick. It just seems like every other pick is crazy.

Are you including repeat opponents there? One dude was 2-8 that he fought twice. Not sure if that is usually included or not.

He said combined record of all his opponents, so I didn't count the guys he fought twice two times.

Yea, that's probably the correct way to do it. For academic purposes though, his opponent record would go to 78-79 if the multiple crushing of the same cans was factored in (assuming your original numbers were correct, I didn't double-check).

Only if you don't double count the wins.

I did not. I just counted every opponent once, regardless of how many times he fought them.

#30 - Urijah Faber

Image

http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Urijah-Faber-8847

The lontime WEC Featherweight champion and UFC title contender at Bantamweight, Urijah Faber is one of the all time great in the smaller weight classes. He was the most dominate fighter under 155 pounds for years with the WEC. He has a career record of 28-6, a WEC record of 9-3, and a UFC record of 5-2. Faber holds victories over Bibiano Fernandes, Dominick Cruz, Jeff Curran, Jens Pulver twice, and Brian Bowles. 5 of Faber's 6 losses have come in major organization title fights.

I dislike both guys, but Mir and Faber deserve to be ranked fairly high.

There's gotta be a run of HWs and LHWs coming up.

And there's one guy yet to come who I can already say I think is too high, but he's a beloved figure, so it will be an interesting discussion. He should be in the next 2-3 fighters, but with guys like Nate Marquardt and Rickson Gracie inside the top 35 all time, who the **** knows.

Two general points to make about the rankings.

1. I think at this point (or even all the way through) one way to look at this is to say would you rather have had fighter A's career or fighter B's? Maybe it's not the be all end all, and there are certainly biases that come into play, but I think it's a useful way to look at some of these close calls.

2. I think championships have been somewhat overrated on this list, in the sense that a belt is only as good as the guy you beat to get it, and holding a belt is only as good as the division its in. Being King of Pancrase in like 2003-2005 should be worth about as much as a King of the Cage championship, but I don't see Tony Lopez on this list (he could be yet to come though...2 division champ!), and a UFC HW (or MW) championship in the early 2000s is probably equivalent with a Strikeforce/Bellator title right now.

Is Miguel Torres not on the list? You say that Faber was the most dominate WEC fighter under 155, and he's had more success in the UFC than Torres, so that implies that he'd be ranked higher. Did you already include Torres on the list and I missed it? Because he's definitely top 100. Or is it because Torres ranked higher than Faber because he had a lot of success before the WEC?

Ah, I must have missed that.

Hasn't Torres had a bunch of "unofficial" fights just like Rickson Gracie? What puts Rickson ahead of him? Rickson was never ranked #1 in the world in his weight class, and at one point Torres was unofficially 46-1(according to him). That's a better record than Rickson, and it includes 4 WEC title fights.

Rickson's own father came out and laughed out loud at Rickson's ridiculous assertions. That should tell you everything you need to know right there. Those shouldn't even be a factor.

That's just the Gracies though. They embellish, they outright lie. Ask any Gracie how Brazil became a country and it would involve some ancestor armbaring the whole of Portugal until they relented.

In general - I absolutely agree. That said, Gracie is a huge family with lots of very different people/branches. Some of them are super honorable/humble people. Seeing how some of them act and then seeing how a guy like Roger acts is just absolutely 100% night and day.

With all this said, Rickson is still a legend imo and I'd kill for the opportunity to learn from him someday. I just don't think much of his mma career relative to the guys behind him on this list.

#29 - Cain Velasquez

A 2 time UFC Heavyweight champion, Cain is one of the best current fighters in MMA. He has a career record of 11-1, with 9-1 coming in the UFC. He holds victories over Junior dos Santos, Brock Lesnar, Ben Rothwell, Antonio Silva, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

No one can argue with him being too low.
