True story, I'm good friends with the guy who cuts Pettis hair. It doesn't cost even half as much as you think.

The more you know.

Tony Ferguson's smack-talk is so forced and abrasive. Not a fan of Khabib, but I hope he knocks his block off anyway.

Decent Fight Night card tonight.

Got worse though when Dodson-Munhoz dropped off. Munhoz missed weight by 4 lbs, which is a lot at the smaller weights. Prazeres missed by 5 at 156. Fight goes on but he was docked 20%. The earlier weigh ins appear to make matters worse because there's more time to build up a weight differential and the 20% isn't enough deterrence. When are they going to finally fix this problem and change back to night time weigh-ins and dock 10% per pound? Rules are so archaic.

In the main event I like the old dog. Anders is moving up too quickly it seems, even though he's a beast. And his blitz style matches up poorly with a karate counter-striker like Machida. If Anders gets on top enough though I think he could end up beating on Machida. That's what I'm scared of. He has took too much punishment already because of hanging on a little long.

It's so simple! All pros, no cons. Just archaism.

You're being a contrarian again.

Never said night weigh-ins are all good. But we've seen which apprach is the lesser of evils right now. Don't know if there's ever going to be a near perfect solution on the timing factor.

But docking 10% per pound is the obvious solution to deterring and punishing properly for missing weight badly. It's merit-based. If you don't like getting half or more of your 2-3 times a year purse taken then at least come close to making weight. They could also put a 40-50% cap on it. Clearly 20% is not doing the trick and is not much deterrence nor compensation to your opponent for being the much bigger man.

Except it hugely increases brain injury to be dehydrated. Same-night means both fighters have to compromise between their long-term health and an immediate advantage in the fight. To expect fighters to step on the scale with optimum hydration is unrealistic. So instead they're going to show-up with some amount of dehydration, either moderate or serious. No cage fighter, nor anyone stepping into cage to fist fight, is going to opt for the longevity option.

Point being: there are more factors than deterrence in deciding when fighters should weigh-in. The deterrence factor might be obvious. But it's not all that is at play.

In the case of same night weigh-ins, both fighters will be compromised in their ability to withstand head trauma.

MMA is still in the dark ages on weight cutting. It's obvious what needs to be done, implementing a system similar to one used in collegiate wrestling. The problem is the commissions don't have the ability to do something like that, and the UFC won't to "independent contractors".

Valentina either 1) wanted to continue the beating, 2) wanted more cage time or 3) didn't want to break this chicks arm, because she just pulled the Americana. Also, that may have been the least competitive fight since Conor/Alvarez. 200 strikes to 1 or some such? IMO could have been stopped several times.

I legit dislike Paul Felder. Not sure why they're pushing him so hard.

I was surprised they just didn't let her immediately go get her belt from the TUF woman holding it for her.

Current champ, forgot her name, at one point said Valentina didn't deserve a shot, that she would fight Sijara Eubanks instead. Guessing tonight didn't make her want to fight Valentina any more.

Also, imagine a world where Valentina is matched up with Roxanne. Hopefully that never comes to pass. Wow.

Good fight in our main event, even though it wasn't exactly action-packed. A lot of tension and most shots were thrown to do harm. Lyoto got just out of the way often, picked his shots, especially that body kick (going orthodox blunted the liver shot and straight, really it's a bit of an unfair advantage to be a southpaw in this sport), and Machida's sumo background let him not get top controlled where Anders does work. I think the judges got it right, although I didn't see how Anders won less than 2 rounds. 2 was the question and I thought they'd give it to Anders because of the blood and appearing to be hurt when he wasn't because of that back-peddling style. That one kd wasn't even legit. Didn't land the punch.

Thiago Santos is a dangerous man. He might be a serious contender. You have to weather a big storm with him. Keeps coming. Has excellent recognition for when his opponent is ducking to land a knee. Sets up that knee to the body. And is unpredictable in spite of being aggressive. Anthony Smith is truly a Lionheart though. Don't know how he kept surviving and he was a threat himself. Unsurprisingly great fight while it lasted.

In her defense, it's a little questionable if she ought to even be sanctioned to fight Valentina.

Just watching Yamasaki disinterestedly observe that beating...ugh. Like a BJJ match ref. But with cumulative head trauma. Screw that guy.

I actually like the narrative that came out of Saturday...Dana blasts Yamasaki for letting an uncompetitive fight go on, yet maybe the UFC deserves some blame for even booking that fight to begin with. A killer like Valentina who some people thought beat the champ of a higher weight class...vs somebody that none of us have ever heard of.

Yamasaki said he did things by the rules (except he was slow on the tap). And he might have been right. "Intelligently" (that is defending in such a way) seems very open to interpretation. There's no "mismatch" criteria for stopping a fight, or "the accumulated damage from this fight has done great harm to the fighter's future health" clause to stop the fight. I'd be open for a revisiting of the rules, but it might be something that is never going to be perfect (especially with corners never saving their fighter).

It was an uncompetitive fight, but Valentina is going to smash just about everyone in that division. I think they should have let her have the title shot right away (though I guess that doesn't really solve the isssue).
