I hope this doesn't contradict what I was saying earlier about Royce Gracie, but now that push comes to shove, it just looks weird to see

13. Shogun
12. Royce
11. BJ Penn

If he's getting the pioneer/name recognition points, he's almost gotta be top 5, because you're kind of saying that short of Silva/GSP level extended dominance, there's nothing modern guys can do to top his accomplishments. If he's not getting the pioneer bump, he should be down closer to the Shamrocks, Severns, and others from that era. I mean, I guess there's some common ground between the two, especially if you consider a UFC tournament win to be equal to a UFC championship.

As for Saku and Royce, while I'm not sure Saku could have ever been considered the best fighter in his weight class (whatever it was...something between WW and MW I guess), let alone the best fighter in the world, Saku got him head to head. When they clashed, in their primes, Saku came out on top. Years later, as near 40 year olds, as a cash grab, a roided up Gracie took a decision. Congratulations. So there's something to the Saku > Royce statement, I think.

Why is that second Royce/Saku fight even considered a win for Royce considering he pissed hot?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought pancrase rules allowed for open-hand striking only

If that's the case, Rutten really only has 3 career MMA fights

Perhaps #14 is too generous considering he won the UFC HW title with a controversial split decision over Randleman

So far, there haven't been any surprises at the top. The top 10 should be pretty obvious for everyone now.

9 are easy, but I'm drawing a blank on the 10th. I could look it up but I'll wait until it's revealed to kick myself. For now I'm going to assume it's Kimbo Slice.

Ah, it finally came to me.

Spoiler:
It's not Kimbo Slice

When you get this close to the top, it is more about being surprised by the order than the fighters.

At this point, the only thing that would surprise me would be a certain current champion being ranked in the top 3...

#10 - Randy "The Natural" Couture

Image

http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Randy-Couture-166

Randy Couture is a 5 time UFC champion, 3 times in the Heavyweight division and 2 times in the Light Heavyweight division. He also was the UFC 13 Heavyweight tournament champion. Couture holds the UFC records for most title reigns and most title fights and was the first fighter in UFC history to win a title in 2 different weight classes. He has a very deceiving MMA record of 19-11, with a UFC record of 16-8. He has career victories over Mark Coleman, Pedro Rizzo twice, Vitor Belfort twice, Tim Sylvia, Tito Ortiz, and Chuck Liddell. His trilogy of fights with Chuck Liddell are among the most famous in MMA history.

I still can't figure him out. I had Randy on my list. Gonna drive me nuts now.

Do not open this spoiler unless you want to read who I think the rest of the fighters in the top 9 are:

Spoiler:
In no particular order:
Chuck Liddell
Anderson Silva
Wanderlei Silva
Jon Jones
Matt Hughes
Fedor
Big Nog
GSP
Dan Henderson

I have the top 8 but I am stuck on 9. I'm interested to see who it is.

#9 - Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira

Big Nog was the first Pride Heavyweight champion, the Interim UFC Heavyweight champion, and is one of only 3 men to hold a belt in both the UFC and Pride. Big Nog has a career record of 34-7-1-1, a Pride record of 17-3-1, and a UFC record of 5-3. Nog holds career victories over Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett, Mark Coleman, Mirko Cro Cop, Fabricio Werdum, and Dan Henderson.

Kevin Randleman fought the very best of his generation

Pedro Rizzo #79
Rampage #20
Sakuraba #19
Cro Cop #18
Bas Rutten #14
Shogun Rua #13
Randy Courture #10
Chuck Liddell
Fedor

With notable wins over Cro Cop, Rizzo, Maurice Smith, Renato Sobral and Pete Williams

Personally, I'd take Tim Sylvia (#40) out of the top 100 and replace him with Randleman

If Pete Williams is one of your notable wins, you need more notable wins. There is simply no comparison between Sylvia and Randleman. Sylvia wins out in every conceivable way you could compare them.

That said, Randleman was one of the last guys cut from this list. If it was the top 110, he'd have been in.

#8 - Matt Hughes

Image

Matt Hughes is a two time UFC Welterweight champion and a UFC Hall of Famer who defended his title 7 times. Hughes has a career record of 45-9, and a UFC record of 18-7. He holds career victories over BJ Penn, Royce Gracie, Sean Sherk, Hayato Sakurai, and Georges St. Pierre. His trilogies with BJ Penn and Georges St. Pierre are some of the more memorable in UFC history.

Randleman has fought 8 of your top 20 fighters of all-time

And he would've been UFC HW champ too, if not for a controversial split decision loss to Rutten

Who has Sylvia beat that warrants his ranking at #40? Arlovski? Vera? Monson?

So maybe you can explain to me why "Sylvia wins out in every conceivable way you could compare them"

Yes, he fought 8 of the top 20, but he was 1-7 in those fights. You don't get a participation ribbon for trying.

Tim Sylvia is one of 5 fighters in UFC history to be a multiple time UFC champion. His career record is 31-8 (as apposed to Randleman's 17-16). Sylvia defended his title multiple times.

Kevin Randleman was a freak of nature who could easily have been top 25 on this list if he ever adapted. But, he didn't, so he isn't.

Can you name the 5 fighters to be multiple time UFC champions? Off the top of my head it seems like there are quite a few more than that.

Mir
Sylvia
Couture
BJ
Hughes
GSP?

Has to be more. It can't be just 5 if we're counting interims. Mir's was interim. Who else?
