Fighting bigger guys is cool and all, but at this point, that isn't what the sport is about. GSP shouldn't be docked points for not doing so.

I think it's more important that there's nobody out there that can make a legit claim to being better than GSP. He's avenged every loss in dominant fashion. I think that counts for more, especially in a tougher division.

Maybe it's not enough to put him over Silva, but I think it's more than enough to put him over Fedor.

Yeah, I don't see why Fedor should get some kind of bonus points for being too lazy to cut weight to 205. He fought at HW and fought HWs, you don't get extra credit for that.

It is not like Fedor was Dan Henderson, willing to go up 2 weight classes just to fight the best guys in the world.

Two time UFC Welterweight champion, GSP has buzz-sawed his way through the UFC's most talent rich division. He has defended his title 8 straight times and shows no signs of slowing down. GSP is 24-2 overall, with a UFC record of 18-2. He holds victories over Nick Diaz, Carlos Condit, Jake Shields, Josh Koscheck twice, Jon Fitch, BJ Penn twice, Sean Sherk, and Matt Hughes twice.

Last chance to add Pettis, bro. And don't think Bernman can't make an argument for that last spot.

Not sure if Anthony deserves number one quite yet, but I'm actually personally appalled that Sergio Pettis hasn't at least cracked the top 100 yet.

Best thing about GSP is that he beat the snot out of both Matts in the rematches. Didn't just go and take the belt, he victimized them, spent that entire fight toying with Serra.

Come back, GSP!

If you disregard winning streaks, dominance, and looking like one is in the Matrix...resume for resume GSP may have a good argument for number one. His list of victims is a murderer's row.

Still go back to being disappointed that he couldn't finish Jake Shields though. Pretty sure the chubby guy in the office next to mine could hang with Jake Shields in a straight kickboxing match. :D

I wish he would fight like that every time out.

If it is not Michael Chandler, Bernman will call be a Zuffa Zombie.

I was going to post this.
I still think Silva is the best ever, but GSP has a far more impressive resume imo.

If he could drop to 155 (like he mentioned a few weeks ago) for a title fight vs Benson and win, would having two belts in two different weight classes make him the GOAT? Or does Silvas finishes trump that still?

Which of Silva's title defense opponents would give GSP the most trouble?

Vitor?

I think that's an interesting way to look at it... I don't think any of GSP's opponents would trouble Silva and I have a hard time thinking the same about Silva's opponents. I think GSP beats all of them, with Vitor being a little tougher. Sonnen negates the wrestling, but GSP jabs him in the face all day and maybe takes him down as well.

So you're saying that Matt Hughes doesn't give Anderson Silva any trouble and Dan Henderson doesn't give GSP any trouble?

I don't know if I agree with that.

Matt Hughes, no, Silva crushes him. Forgot about Hendo... thought that fight was at 205 for some reason. He beats GSP, in theory, but not according to MMA math.

Hendo/Silva was at 205?

No, 185 for the title. I omitted Hendo from my initial post because I forgot it was a title defense... I thought it was a 205-er.

#1 - Anderson "The Spider" Silva

Image

http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Anderson-Silva-1356

UFC Middleweight champion and former Pride standout, Anderson Silva has been breaking records and cementing his status as the best ever since arriving in the UFC. He is 16-0 in the UFC, with a whopping 11 defenses of his title. Silva has a career record of 33-4, with wins over Chael Sonnen twice, Yushin Okami, Vitor Belfort, Forrest Griffin, Nate Marquardt, Dan Henderson, and Rich Franklin twice. Silva's resume speaks for itself, but it is also how he wins these fights that cements him as the best ever.

It's sorta a question as to how much you value finishes, I guess. Or like complete ease in the ring. Cos, yeah, even though GSP has the better resume, I always talk about Anderson Silva as the best mix martial artist on the planet.

He's also a star, in the sense that he's showy. I never get that "no one else can do that" feeling from any fighter, except maybe Jones with push kicks and stuff. Does the finesse **** at the absolute highest level, there's nothing workmanlike at all about his approach. Just soo soo much better than his opponents and he knows it and the crowd knows it and his opponent knows it... and it becomes evident very early in most of his fights. It's LBJ/Tiger level stuff.

I can't imagine how big the guy would be if he could work a mic like Brock, for example. Dismantling a guy while showing off then crapping on the sponsors after the fight. The only word I can understand from him is brah-zheel.

Can't argue with Anderson at #1, but I wonder is he's helped by his 2 submission losses coming in Pride rather than the UFC from a reputation standpoint.
