Couture was coming off a LHW loss (just one, not a streak) when he beat Sylvia for the HW title, but of course he was a former HW champ, and most of the top HW's weren't in the UFC. But that's the closest I can think of.

It's getting close to merit not mattering anymore.

I'd much prefer 125 being added to 145. As dumb as I find it that Cyborg isn't fighting for this belt, she will fight the winner, and if it's Holm that is a fight they can sell. To me the bigger issue is who can fill this weight class? Cyborg, Holm, de Randamie, Lina Lansberg, Megan Anderson in Invicta might be decent...
That's about it, and that isn't a lot. I don't see any elite prospects coming up in this division either. Bellator seems to have shelved the 145 division for 115, maybe the UFC can go get the 3 decent 145ers over there in Budd, Dufresne, and Coenen. With those 3 maybe the UFC can keep the division interesting until the next generation arrives, but I still don't really see the upside in this. They have to be assuming Holm and Cyborg can keep the division afloat until reinforcements arrive.

Brock fined and suspended one year for the roids. So are all banned substances treated equally by usada? Why does Machida get 18 months for whatever weird technicality he popped for but Bones and Brock get a year for legit roids?

123 makes a lot more sense. I just don't think there are that many women fighters who are natural 145er's. I could see a lot more being 115-135

I think because Jones and Brock took things that didn't list the banned substance, whereas Machida took something that listed the banned substance (because he didn't realize that it was illegal). I realize there are huge issues with supplements, but this seems like an easy way to cheat and get off relatively cheap.
I don't think all substance are treating the same, but taking something that you know has a high chance of being bogus, but doesn't admit it, is better then taking something that lists a banned ingredient (even if it's worth is somewhat questionable).

What did Brock take that had the substance hidden? I didn't see the article, just a tweet.
Also, what are all these mundane products that contain clomid? Did I possibly eat clomid for dinner tonight? I had chicken with some rice.

I don't know, but past articles said he was having a foot cream tested.

Actual food (and medicine) is decently regulated. It's supplements, vitamins, and other products (like foot creams and boner pills apparently) that aren't regulated at all (and don't even have to tell you what's in them) that are a big problem.

Right. I'm just being facetious because I'm pissed that these cheaters have found a loophole.

The clomid your chicken was given would be metabolised by the time it hits the grocer. It quite possibly was on steroids of numerous sorts.

Pretty good article by Meltzer talking about adding weight classes for the sake of adding weight classes.
WME seems to think that they can manufacture interest in fights just by having a belt. They saw the metrics saying that title fights = big draws but don't understand the years of buildup that go along with those fights that generates that interest.
I literally have zero interest in that Holly fight. I had zero (additional) interest in Pettis/Halloway due to the belt. I would have had zero interest in Rumble/whoever for the interim belt.

The belt for that is a huge negative for me. If they said it's just the first 145 fight in the winner will get Cyborg for the first title fight, I'd be ok with it.

The UFC is killing itself via championship belt stupidity considering we have Khabib, Ferguson, Maia and Yoel without title shots and I literally can't tell you who Germaine de Randamie is or who she's ever fought, that we just had a title fight in which Anthony Pettis fought Halloway for an interim belt when Jose Aldo already had an interim belt in that weight class and we just had Connor skip the line and win the 155 belt.
WME is going to destroy this org.

Telling you, some mma reporters whose opinions I trust have been saying that their interpretation of WME's strategy is to move away from the meritocracy and just put on fights that make more money.
Khabib, Ferguson, Maia without a title shot. Had DC not been injured, how many fights in a row would Holloway have won now without that shot?

I get they have debt payments, but that's probably not the best way to make money long term. And fights like Conor doing whatever, that makes money, but I don't see how adding belts no one cares about gets more PPV buys.
And though it's on Fox, I guess tomorrow's all pretty people card plays into that? With Zuffa we got title eliminator level fights, now we get reality TV stars (and not even ones from TUF).

I mean there's things called "title eliminators".
Though the winner of this will be my highest ranked lightweight.

De Randamie is a kickboxing legend, top 2-3 females in the sport of all time. If not, the tops. Way before there was an option in MMA, she was putting ladies away. Almost 50 bouts, no losses. Violent too. 15 stoppages. For a lady in like 2005.

That's interesting. She's not that old, maybe its just the mileage as to why she hasn't had a successful mma career to date.

Her against Holm is interesting for that reason, though. They are both converts who essentially exhausted the opportunities in their respective sports. I remember watching GDR highlights 10+ years ago and people hypothesizing about the destruction she'd provoke if she moved into MMA.
