Noob question re: rankings...

I'm not a huge fan of rankings, partially because I think people put way too much stock into them, but also partially because I don't really understand how they work. For example, I'm seeing people say Werdum is now the #1 heavyweight because he beat Fedor. I think he was ranked somewhere around #9 (correct me if I'm wrong) before the fight. What makes him jump from #9 to #1 just like that?
Is a lot of value put into the quality of opposition? Because Overeem just jumped into the top 10 after beating Rogers despite the fact he hadn't really beaten anyone of note (current) since 2006. I'm a bit confused about the whole thing but I'd rather be properly informed before I form a solid opinion on rankings.

Well I think Werdum being ranked #1 is stupid. Top 10 for sure and maybe even top 5. His last to wins were pretty big by defeating Fedor and Silva, but his last loss was to Dos Santos in the UFC.
Obviously Dos Santos is climbing the rankings, but I doubt anybody would rank Dos Santos higher then Fedor even with last nights loss.
But to answer your question, it all depends on whos ranking the fighters and what they are looking for. Normally after a couple wins or so the fighter might not jump far in the rankings. But Werdum beating Fedor obviously is huge. But for example if he was ranked 10 then after that win I would say he would jump 2-3 slots to 7-8, but thats just how I would rank that.

Werdum is not # 1 now that he beat Fedor. With Fedor losing, I would say Brock is now # 1 at heavyweight .

I moved Werdum up to #2, but IMO a jump from #9 to #1 is not out of the question after beating a guy who is the best of all time and had never legitimately lost. Rankings are a constantly changing thing, where all the new info must be weighted after each fight.
IMO at the moment it is...
1. Lesnar
2. Werdum
3. Fedor
4. Carwin
5. Cain

MMA rankings are the stupidest thing.
