Mayweather-Pacquaio almost on?

Sorry to bring up a topic that seems to come up again and again but never materializes in the end. This time, it might be legit now:

Arum claims progress on megafight negotiations

The highly anticipated proposed bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, which would match boxing’s two best fighters and its two biggest stars, is inching toward reality.

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank said Wednesday that issues have been resolved and the only thing standing between the fight being made is a decision by Mayweather as to whether he wants to fight again in 2010.

Arum has said for months that Pacquiao will fight on Nov. 13, whether it is against Mayweather or another opponent.

“I think the only question is whether Mayweather is prepared to fight now,” Arum said. “He may say he’s had his fight for the year and that’s it and that we’ll address it again next year. He might say that. I don’t know. I don’t know. But that’s what I’m hypothesizing.

“The question is whether Mayweather is willing to go into the ring this year. It’s up to him. His people would love him to do it. He may not want to do it. If Mayweather wants to fight in November, I believe the fight will be made. To me it seems – it seems, and say that, because I’m not Mayweather – that the only issue is whether he wants to fight in November.”

Leonard Ellerbe, the chief executive officer of Mayweather Promotions, could not be reached for reaction on Arum’s statement. Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, cited an agreement the sides made earlier this year not to speak to the media about the negotiations.

After being apprised of Arum’s Wednesday comments, Schaefer still declined to comment.

“My reaction is no comment,” Schaefer said. “I really can’t say anything. I won’t comment in any way, shape or form. You know this and anybody who has called me knows this: The only two words I’m going to say when I’m asked about this are ‘No comment.’ That’s my comment. No comment.

...

Arum is believed to have been speaking directly with Al Haymon, Mayweather’s adviser and de facto manager, in an effort to close the deal.

The 78-year-old promoter refused to go into specifics, such as purse split and the drug testing issue, though he indicated that they have been dealt with to his satisfaction.

“That’s all been resolved,” Arum said of the dispute over the drug testing. “It may be that Floyd wants to fight in May, in which case [Pacquiao will] fight [another opponent] in November and fight him in May. I am not going to talk about the specifics of the negotiations. You have my statement that there are no real issues that I can see, except whether he wants to fight now or later or not at all.

“As far as I’m concerned, we have two guys [Antonio Margarito and Cotto] in the wings who could make attractive fights for Manny, though they are certainly not as attractive as a Mayweather fight,” Arum added. “But I don’t want to talk about [Margarito and Cotto]. I want to make sure there is no chance for this Mayweather fight to happen this year before I talk about any other fight. Once I ascertain whether the fight is or isn’t going to happen, then I’ll sit with Manny and I’ll explain the situations, Margarito, Cotto, 154, catch weights, all of that, and then, he’ll make his choice. But I want to focus completely on making the Mayweather fight before I even address any of that.”

It seems like the purse split and drug testing as been resolved. Now it's up to each party to sign on the dotted line?

Let the debate -- as to who is the best P4P fighter -- begin!

I'll believe this when I see it.

IMO Mayweather is the P4P king and will be until someone comes close to touching him.

Thank you!

If this fight actually does happen, how do you see it going down?

I think Mayweather would be too fast for Pacman and would out point him in route to a decision victory. AKA, the usual.

I can see the outcome, but not the reasoning. At this stage of their careers, Pacquiao is the much faster fighter. Mayweather isn't as fleet-footed as he was before he took the 18 month layoff, whereas Pacquiao is a perpetual motion machine who never stops moving and never stops fighting.

The mistake I think every fighter who faces him makes is they assume Pacquiao rushes head on, and they'll be able to counter and exchange with him. Oscar assumed that, Hatton assumed that, Cotto assumed that. But Pac is a much more complex offensive fighter than he gets credit for, even though he's the most celebrated fighter right now. He throws punches with concussive power from weird angles with both hands, he sidesteps and unleashes combos then gets out of the way when his opponent squares up, and when he does rush in, he does it because he wants his opponent exchange with him and fight his fight.

Marquez showed the blueprint for beating Pacquiao. He arguably won both fights and even though Morales did beat Pacquiao, any boxing fan would agree that Marquez was his toughest opponent. You have to disrupt his attack with timing and effective counterpunching, which Mayweather excels at. But even Marquez took a hellacious beating in both fights, getting knocked down four times. And Pacquiao wasn't nearly as complete a fighter as he is now.

But the genius of Floyd Mayweather is he can adjust to any style, and he will fight back if he feels like he has to fight back. I think he has trouble for the first couple of rounds adjusting to his speed and Pacquiao's unpredictability. But like Floyd Mayweather always does, he'll adjust and figure out what he needs to do to win. And the likely scenario is that after he weathers the initial Pacquiao storm, he takes over and cruises to a unanimous decision.

But, what could make this a special fight is if Pacquiao can adjust to Mayweather's adjustment. Then we could see a high-speed chess match between the two best fighters of their generation.
That's why boxing fans want to see this fight so badly. Pacquiao's the one guy who can test all of Floyd's abilities. And vice versa.

I really can't wait and I'm hoping that both guys sign the contracts. I truly think its going to be a special, special fight.

I'll believe it when I see it. In other words when Pu$$y Boy Floyd grows a pair of balls and actually want's to fight a real fighter in their prime that doesn't have to jump 3 weight classes.

Pacman will **** him up!

Yeah, I don't have much hope this gets put together.

When the training camps start, maybe.

I don't claim to be a huge boxing fan, but from what I understand it doesn't seem like Floyd will let this happen.

Neither guy seems willing to cave to the other to make the fight happen.

I'll believe you once Mayweather, in case he runs away from Pacquiao again, decides to fight another legit and credible welterweight like Cotto or Margarito.

IMO Mayweather is the P4P king and will be until someone comes close to touching him.

Whatever makes you sleep at night.

From Dan Rafael at ESPN.

The addition of the clock to the TR web site tells me they know Mayweather isn't going to sign and now they can let loose. There were negotiations and they were substantive. I believe Pacquiao and Top Rank really want to make the fight for November. When it was talked about for March, I do not think Arum wanted to make it. Now he does. But back then Mayweather, who needed the money, wanted to make it. Now he has money from the Mosley fight and doesn't want to fight.

Floyd Mayweather is going to ruin his legacy if he doesn't sign tonight.

I doubt Mayweather is going to sign, unless the money is split slightly his way and the amount is beyond his expectation.

Likely scenario: He sits out the rest of 2010. He'll come back next fall from his mini "retirement"(when he needs $ because of his lifestyle), takes on a blown up LW, and the Pac fight happens in May 2012.

Why won't Mayweather sign for this fight this time ? Pacman still won't take Olympic style tests ?
