Strikeforce Officially Releases Shields

Article says SF released him. He's leaning towards the UFC. Also said he wants to debut at MW against Anderson Silva.

Also said SF will indeed have a 4,6, or even 16 man tournament for the vacated MW title.

I just hope he isn't going to fight Anderson because GSP is busy. I'd rather he fight at WW. Would be nice to see someone new against GSP.

He's going to Bellator. Count on it.

There's no way Shields could take on Anderson. Shields' striking is terrible and Anderson would pick him apart. If the fight went to the ground Shields wouldn't be able to control Anderson like he did Hendo because Anderson is much bigger and more athletic than Hendo. He should stick to WW where he could make more noise.

Bit of a waste to splash money on this guy to bring him in and have him destroyed by your champion in his first fight. At least squeeze a couple of PPV's out of him first.

I think he's better at WW than he is at MW, but I also think he poses a bigger threat to Anderson Silva than he does to GSP, if that makes sense...

That's what I was going to say. Both of them can outstrike Shields with ease, but GSP can beat him at his own game.

I agree that he's more of a threat to Anderson as well, even if he's a better fighter at WW. GSP is just a horrible match up for him. I doubt Shields could even get a takedown. People forget because you don't often see it, but GSP probably has the best TDD in MMA.

Still, i think both pick Jake apart on the way to an easy T/KO.

What to do with Jake. It's tricky. I'd day give him to Fitch/Alves winner, but then he has a good chance to lose in his UFC debut and his status as a contender is gone. No one wants that. You could have him fight at MW, but GSP really does need contenders and Jake is a natural WW. I dunno. It's tough.

I would be shocked if he went to Bellator. Shields wants to fight in the UFC. Dana is openly courting Shields. Seems pretty cut and dry. Why would he go to Bellator?

Shields fights in the 2 division in the UFC which most needs an influx of new contenders. He will likely come right in and fight GSP or Silva.

Sounds a lot like what people said about Hendo going into his fight with Shields.

GSP >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hendo. I'm a Hendo fan, but the only thing of note he has done in the last 3 years is land a right hand on Bisping.

Clearly, but my point is that people just keep assuming the next guy will be the one to expose Shields. But, it never seems to happen.

I think a GSP/Shields fight would be interesting, because Shields has the much better BJJ. I do agree that he is a bigger threat to Silva than GSP.

PS: I'm pretty sure that victory over Franklin was a bigger win for Hendo than the one over Bisping, even if it was less pretty.

Is it? You put him against Silva or GSP and he gets destroyed then that discredits the level of competition in Strikeforce big time.

He's not going to headline a PPV against a Jon Fitch or something.

Besides, if he starts fighting the contenders, there's a good chance he loses and messes up the big fight with GSP or Silva.

Might as well throw him in there right away and get the guaranteed big main event, especially when both GSP and Silva are struggling to find new challengers.

Exactly. It did not ruin Dan Henderson when he lost his first 2 UFC fights against Rampage and Silva. Even if Shields loses, it will not hurt him much because he is expected to lose.

If he fights GSP and loses, a fight against Fitch or Alves is still intriguing. If he fights Fitch or Alves and loses, then a GSP fight is no longer intriguing. The UFC knows this and will give him a title fight the minute he shows up.

Henderson definitely showed it's possible to jump-in head first. But Dan has a thousand times the credibility that Shields does. Dan had fought everybody. I think a lot of us believe that Shields will not only lose, but will be exposed.

There were no question marks to Dan, meanwhile.

Shields loses his first two and the result will be disastrous. And who knows about how he reacts to being stopped?
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

Well, I think they will have to pick one or the other.

Shields is certainly not at the level Henderson was at where he can step in, lose to one champ, and then face the other. Especially because neither fight figures to look anything like Rampage/Hendo. If the Hendo/Silva fight came first, who knows if they would have given him the title shot at LHW right away.

While I think he has a chance at beating Silva, he also has a chance of getting blown out of the water, or being made to look a fool, a la Demian Maia. Against GSP, he will lose, but he might do it in a way that gives off the impression of a close fight. So it might be better to do the GSP fight first? But he may also find it easier to work his way to a title shot at WW, though I could certainly see him being a bad matchup for some guys at MW.

I just think the main thing he has going for him are that he hasn't lost in 5 years. If he fights GSP first up and loses badly then he is just another guy in that division fighting amongst each other lining up to get beaten in the title match. The fact that people are worried about him losing if he was to fight another guy before he fought GSP sort of goes with what I'm saying; if he isn't good enough to beat those guys why waste everyones time and throw him to GSP straight away?

I think I'm just bored with that division. I couldn't care less about what Fitch/Alves are doing, Koscheck I like but realistically I don't think he'll beat GSP. I want him to fight Silva and be done with it. Same logic applies to him fighting Silva btw.

Is it? You put him against Silva or GSP and he gets destroyed then that discredits the level of competition in Strikeforce big time.

I guess, that's a real Vince McMahon thing to do though. I think beating Henderson probably cancels that aspect of it out a bit.

That makes sense. Losing to GSP via lnp looks a lot better than being knocked out by Silva in the first round.
