GSP v Silva unlikely unless GSP moves up in weight - Silva

Post#1 » by Shaazzam » Thu Jul 29, 2010 5:11 pm

http://www.sportsnet.ca/mma/2010/07/27/silva_stpierre/

"If you want to beat me up, make weight and come fight me in my category, my division," Silva said through his manager-interpreter Ed Soares on a media conference call to promote UFC 117.

St-Pierre (20-2) has said he is not averse to moving up to 185 pounds, although he would want to take his time so he could put the extra pounds on properly.

Silva's stance would also nix a possible fight with light-heavyweight champion Mauricio (Shogun) Rua, even though Silva has fought at 205 pounds in the past.

The fight I would love to see would be Silva v. Rua.

Not sure if there's merit to this, but I heard that after Sonnen and Belfort, Silva might be forced up to 205.

GSP would really have to raise weight, I cant see Silva making much below 185 these days - not healthily anyway, what with him bouncing between 185 and 205 so frequently these past couple of years.

Silva vs Rua would be a great fight, it would either be a fight that show cases how unbelievable Silva is on his feat, or just show Shoguns return to form. Fire works would ensue in that fight.

GSP vs Silva I still think has the potential to be the same as the BJ Penn vs GSP "super fight" massivily hype and not living up to expectation - the main two possibilities I think are SIlva dancing around a lot or GSP getting him to the ground and lieing on top to avoid his striking (even from the bottom, Silva being so long could inflict some heavy damage). That said, both could make game of each others strengths and make for a all time classic of (the best) striker vs (the best) grappler - style match up for the ages?

This fight would be awsome, to the beer guzzling meathead they wouldnt like it, I see it being a very cautious fight with both guys being very conservative and sticking to a gameplan. Spider is not going to engage GSP, much like he didnt Maia and Leites, and GSP is not going to bang with him. 1st one to make a mistake loses. I see Spider winning via MT clinch after stuffing a GSP shot, but I'll be cheering for GSP the whole way.

GSP should be the one moving up if this fight happens. No chance Silva can get lower than 185 pounds.

Nobody, including GSP, has ever said that Silva should have to move down. Only 1 clown has said it was a possibility and now he says it isn't.

fight a catchweight non title fight, that way neither one of them has any excuses and they dont have to put their precious titles on the line

IMO that heavily favors GSP, who then only needs to lay and pray a couple rounds to survive. Why not just move up to 185 and take on Silva for the belt? There is no downside for either fighter. GSP can just go back down and dominate 170 if he loses. And if Silva loses, it opens him up to a lot of good fights in other weightclasses.

Silva is already a small MW...so it would make no sense for him to drop down. GSP walks around 185 anyways before cutting down for fights, so it would be pretty easy for him.

way off, dude. he's 185 because of hydration and body fat, for the most part.

the point of wrestling is to have an intuition for how to leverage your body weight. it's a major process to move up 15 pounds. every last fibre has to work within kinetic chains and so on.
